Chapter Benson 45
Chapter 45 Shadows in the Dark
Yvonne slowly opened her eyes in the darkness, the room silent save for the soft sound of her breathing echoing in the air.
The memories of last night were like shattered dreams, blurred and chaotic.
Benson had brought her home late at night, her body feeling utterly drained, leaving her no choice but to let him wash away the exhaustion of the day
In that haze, she couldn’t even distinguish who had lost their sanity at that moment, or who had lost themselves under the influence of the drugs.
A gentle knock broke the room’s silence, Maria’s concerned voice coming from outside: “Is Madam awake?”
“Come in,” Yvonne’s voice was hoarse, as if eroded by the night’s wind and rain.
Maria entered the room, her movements gentle and practiced.
She walked to the window and gently pulled back the curtains, letting a bright beam of light flood the room, causing Yvonne to squint involuntarily.
Maria turned slowly, her gaze resting on Yvonne for a moment.
There was a flicker of surprise in her eyes, not from seeing Yvonne’s appearance for the first time, but because Yvonne looked so different from her usual self.
Since Maria started working here, she knew that Yvonne was a rare beauty, her looks as delicate and noble as lilies blooming in spring.
Now, Yvonne’s long hair was scattered on the pillow like stars in the night sky, shimmering with a soft glow.
She wore a loose nightgown in a subtle hue, like a misty veil in the morning light, gently swaying with her movements.
The neckline of the nightgown had slipped slightly, revealing skin as white as snow, smooth and delicate like the finest porcelain.
However, faint marks were visible on her skin, like branches eroded by winter wind and snow, evoking a sense of pity.
One side of Yvonne’s face was slightly swollen, with bruised marks that looked like a painter’s random strokes on a canvas, disrupting the harmony yet adding a touch of realism.
These marks didn’t diminish her beauty, instead, they made it seem more real, more touching.
Her beauty was no longer distant and untouchable but now carried a hint of fragility, a

After the meal, Megan and Paul emered Wormer office together
Both looked somber, seemingly bringing bad news.
Megan spoke first, with a trace of worry in his voice, “Anthony turned himself in early this moming, confessing everything. And Zoe came to apologize, nearly causing you harm. She wants to see you.”
Yvonne sat behind her desk, hands folded, brow furrowed in thought. She didn’t respond immediately to Megan, falling into silence.
Zoe acting innocent now? Yvonne thought to herself.
She vividly remembered hearing Zoe telling Anthony to hurry and get the pictures. Those words, sharp as knives, were etched in her memory.
Seeing Yvonne’s silence, Paul continued, “I rechecked the private room, found not surveillance equipment. I believe Zoe and Anthony are definitely in cahoots.”
His tone was firm, showing his judgment on Zoe and Anthony’s actions.
Yvonne finally spoke, her voice calm and resolute, “We lack solid evidence now, and Zoe won’t admit it. Call Daniel and tell him to find another supplier for Zoe’s goods.”
Yvonne’s decision was swift, without hesitation,
Paul nodded and left the office.
Megan watched Paul’s departure, then turned to Yvonne, puzzled, “Would Zoe really do something so vile just for Daniel’s issue?”
As a woman, she knew that such actions would drive others to despair. Could a minor business conflict justify such cruelty?
Yvonne shook her head, pondering deeper issues, “The real mastermind isn’t Zoe. Someone else is hiding in the shadows.”
“Who?” Megan asked urgently.
Yvonne shook her head again, her voice tinged with helplessness, “I don’t know, but the truth will surface eventually. Don’t rush.”
