Chapter 109

Life had to go on regardless. Zoey had changed majors, and her aspirations were clear. She aimed to become a certified public accountant and even asked for a few basic accounting books for herself.

Calla struggled to get up, but still grabbed her bag to head out. In truth, she was intentionally defying Mercer’s authority. He didn’t want her to leave the residence, so she was determined to go out–acting out of spite.

Seeing Calla putting on her shoes in the foyer, Jasmine hurried over to stop her. “Mrs. Garland, you can’t go out. Mr. Garland gave specific instructions not to let you.”

“He has no right to restrict my freedom.” Calla ignored Jasmine and continued putting on her shoes. Out of desperation, Jasmine stood in the doorway, spreading her arms to block Calla’s path. “Mrs. Garland, what if Mr. Garland blames me? I can’t bear the consequences.”

“If he gets wind of this, tell him to come to me. I’ll handle it,” Calla said. She pushed past Jasmine and left without looking back.

Seeing that she couldn’t stop her, Jasmine shouted after her. “Mrs. Garland, please come back quickly! I’ll cover for you, but you have to return soon!”

Calla went to the bookstore to buy Zoey some books. Then, she delivered them to the Sherman residence. After having lunch there, she headed to Atlas and met Alicia for afternoon tea.

She knew in her heart that she was deliberately provoking Mercer. Maybe if she made him furious enough, he would finally agree to a divorce.

Calla had a bit of a reckless mindset. She knew her actions would likely lead to trouble, but she did it anyway. She was anticipating for Mercer to come and deal with her.

By the time Calla returned to Emerald Bay, night had fallen.

As soon as Calla entered the foyer, she saw Jasmine nervously approaching her.

Calla ignored Jasmine and lowered her head to change her shoes. She knew Mercer had to be back

because she saw his leather shoes.

“Mrs. Garland, Mr. Garland is waiting in the living room. He’s very upset that you went out. Please go and say something nice to him,” Jasmine pleaded, holding Calla’s arm.

Calla frowned at Jasmine’s good intentions, then walked into the living room.

From the corner of her eye, she saw a figure smoking by the window. Calla didn’t pause but walked straight toward the stairs.

“Stop!” A harsh voice called out as soon as she reached the stairs.

Calla gripped the banister, halting but not turning around. Mercer stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray. Frowning, he walked over to her.

Did you ignore what I said? I told you not to go out, yet you stayed outside all day!” Mercer’s voice was loud enough to shake the building.

Calla slowly turned around, still holding her chin high. Her face showed not the slightest fear. “You don’t love me. Now that the one you love has come back to you, why don’t you divorce me? Mercer, I don’t understand what you’re thinking.”

She stared at him with a puzzled look. His eyes were deep as the sea, impossible to fathom.

Calla’s words caught Mercer off guard. He opened his mouth but couldn’t speak for a moment. Seeing his expression, Calla found it amusing. He still thought she knew nothing.

The next moment, Mercer’s gaze filled with a trace of confusion as he asked, “How did you find out?”
