“I said Harlan is better than you. He is a hundred times, a thousand times better than you. Is that enough?” Anger had stripped Calla of her rationality at this point. She was shouting at Mercer at the top of her lungs.
Calla’s words made Mercer’s veins bulge, and his eyes grew cold. She watched as he breathed heavily.
She felt some satisfaction from having dealt him a harsh blow. Yet fear dominated her emotions as his icy countenance terrified her.
Mercer tightened his grip on Calla’s shoulders, and her face contorted in pain. But she stubbornly only frowned, refusing to cry out or show any sign of weakness.
“Do you realize you’re pregnant? You’re carrying my child, and yet you go out to mess around with other men. Are you even fit to be a wife or a mother? Don’t you know you’re a married woman?” Mercer roared
at her.
Calla was shaken so violently that she felt dizzy. Her shoulder blades felt like they were about to be crushed under his grip.
She instinctively used both hands to protect her belly. A sinking sensation filled her lower abdomen.
At that moment, Jasmine happened to return and saw Mercer and Calla grappling with each other. She exclaimed in surprise, “Mr. Garland, what are you doing? Mrs. Garland is pregnant. How can you be so rough with her?”
Jasmine’s arrival snapped Mercer out of his rage. He loosened his grip, and Calla fell onto the couch.
“Mrs. Garland, are you alright?” Jasmine cried out in alarm, rushing to help Calla up.
Seeing Calla’s pale face, Mercer clenched his jaw, looking both regretful and dejected. He paced around the room restlessly.
Calla gradually recovered, sipping the water Jasmine handed her, feeling a little better.
Mercer noticed Calla’s improved complexion and that she was not seriously hurt. He suddenly shouted, ” Jasmine, from today onward, you watch over Mrs. Garland. Don’t let her step out of the apartment!”
Jasmine looked confused.
Calla stared at Mercer in bewilderment. After buttoning up his shirt collar, he turned and headed toward
the front door.
“You have no right to control me!” Calla shouted at his back.
Mercer paused at the door. “I am your husband. I have every right to prevent you from being unfaithful.”
With that, he walked out of the door.
“Mercer, you bastard!” Calla cursed as the door slammed shut.
After he left, the apartment fell into silence.
Calla’s eyes reddened, feeling an overwhelming sense of injustice. So he could act with impunity while she had to toe the line.

He could spend every day with Sophie, returning only at midnight. In addition, he could disappear for a week for Sophie. In other words, he could do anything he wanted–but Calla couldn’t.
He was being unreasonable! How unfair!
Calla could no longer hold it in and began weeping softly.
Seeing Calla cry, Jasmine became frantic. “Mrs. Garland, please don’t cry. It’s not good for the baby! What did you do to upset Mr. Garland so much?
“A woman must observe propriety. A man like Mr. Garland is bound to get jealous easily. From now on, you should stop associating with those male friends of yours.”
Jasmine’s nagging only irritated Calla more. She got up and ran upstairs, on the verge of breaking down.
Fearing her heightened emotions would affect the baby, Calla stayed in bed all day to rest.
