Chapter 13
No matter what he tried, Anthony still couldn't contact Giselle on the third day since she'd left.
Time was ticking. His anxiety was piling up.
Melanie had tried contacting him many times over the past few days, but he kept pushing her away. Finally, when Melanie appeared at his door, she was shocked to see Anthony's disheveled and exhausted state. Her eyes were filled with worry as she asked, "Tony! What's wrong?"
With things now like this, Anthony felt a surge of mixed emotions within him when he saw Melanie at his door.
He had long converted the romantic love he felt for her to normal, platonic love. However, he never had the chance to tell her that.
But since Giselle had misunderstood his relationship with Melanie and left, Anthony realized that he couldn't drag this on anymore. He had to grab the opportunity to explain everything to Melanie. "Melanie, I've been trying to contact Giselle lately."
"Giselle? What's wrong with her?"
Seeing the anxious look on Melanie's face only made Anthony feel even more shameful.
"She went missing. I can't find her."
"What? Why would she suddenly go missing? Is it because of her divorce? Does it have anything to do with her ex-husband?"
"Yes, it's because of her divorce, and it's also because of her ex-husband. Well, technically, it's because of me," Anthony said. Melanie was even more confused.
Anthony saw the confusion on her face and finally mustered enough courage to confess to her.
"I am Giselle's ex-husband. I got married to her three years ago. I'm sorry for keeping it a secret from you, Melanie."
The sudden news hit Melanie's heart like a sledgehammer. She immediately froze on the spot.
So, the little signs she noticed thanks to her sixth sense had been right all along.
Melanie was in deep shock as the news sank in. Still, she couldn't accept it. Her voice turned hoarse as she interrogated Anthony. "Why did you hide it from me? How is this fair for Giselle?"
Anthony didn't know what to say. He couldn't put into words the contradicting feelings he felt in his heart. However, the silence seemed to trigger Melanie even further.
Melanie recalled the last conversation she had with Giselle and felt utterly ashamed and remorseful. If she'd known earlier that Anthony was Giselle's husband, she would have nipped her feelings in the bud before they had the chance to bloom. More importantly, she would never even have brought it up with Giselle.
She suddenly realized that she had become the catalyst for accelerating Anthony and Giselle's divorce. Even though it hadn't been intentional, Melanie still felt terrible and heartbroken about it.
"You don't owe me an apology. You should apologize to Giselle instead!"
"I know, but she disappeared right after the divorce. I can't find her at all."
When Melanie heard this, she knew that it meant Giselle had already lost all hope in Anthony. She felt even worse than before. Nobody else would understand Giselle's feelings more than she did.
"It's impossible that someone would disappear off the face of the earth just like that. If you're still unable to find a way to contact her, that only proves that you've never even cared for her in the first place!"
As soon as the hurtful truth came out of Melanie's mouth, Anthony felt a searing pain in his chest. He lowered his head in guilt as his nose started tingling.
"I owe her too much for the past three years. I've ignored all of her efforts and contributions and even neglected her feelings..."
He then trailed off, on the verge of breaking down into tears.
Melanie was speechless as well. She turned around in silence and left with heavy footsteps.
Anthony's pain and remorse increased tenfold when he saw Melanie's figure retreating in disappointment.
Everything happened because of him. It was all his fault, yet, he'd gotten two innocent people involved in his mess.
He felt deeply ashamed and remorseful.
