Chapter 18
“So Lance, I saw that you were checking Dylla out,” I mentioned as soon as we sat in Keri’s living room. Roy and Isa went out. Finally. Keri was making an apple pie for us. Again, finally.
Lance looked like a deer caught in headlights as he heard what I said. I smirked, and Dorian wiggled his eyebrows. “I was not.” He slammed his hands on the table.
“Sure,” I said, not convinced by his denial. “Anyway, can I cut your hair?” I asked him with hopeful eyes. I thought it was the right time to do so.
“Why?”
“Because I can see that short hair will suit you better, and I will cut it one way or another. So, decide, do you want me to cut it with your knowledge, or behind your back?” I asked. See what I did there? No? Okay…
He went silent for a while until I heard the sigh I was aching to hear. The cry of defeat. “Fine, but don’t make me look like an idiot!”
“Aren’t you one now?” Dorian remarked, and Lance rolled his eyes. I chuckled and walked to the kitchen to ask Keri for hair scissors. I waited for a few minutes until she returned with big ones.
“Don’t cut his hair until I come and see. I love makeovers. The pie will be ready in five minutes, or less.” She handed me the scissors, and I nodded then walked back to the boys.
“I regret it already. Your smile is scary!” Lance declared as soon as he saw me sit next to Dorian. I imagined him with Dylla together, as a couple, that was why my smile looked creepy. But I did not want to tell him yet. He would refuse the idea, even though he kind of liked her.
“I am nice until I am not.”
“Like that’s supposed to make me feel better!”
“Relax, I will make sure she does not go crazy. It would be embarrassing to walk next to a cop with a stupid hair cut,” Dorian stated his opinion and Lanced nodded dubiously.
Keri walked into the living room with a wide grin and a beautiful, big apple pie. “Time to eat this masterpiece,” I announced, and we did not wait. It was absolutely heavenly. “Now that my stomach is satisfied, shall we begin?” I asked Lance, and he agreed to my crazy idea. Keri brought a chair and a towel to put it under it.
Dorian encouraged Lance, and I just admired the long scissors. “Tell me she’s not fascinating about the damn scissors!” Lance’s plea brought me back, and I laughed at his terrified expression.
“Don’t worry, you won’t feel a thing. I promise to make you look good for Dylla,”
“What?”
“What?” I repeated. “Shall we begin?”
“The movie was amazing! Thanks, Roy,” we heard Ismarelda say as they entered the house. “Hey, guys… Wow!” she said, and her eyes widened when she spotted the change.
“Lance! Man, you don’t look homeless anymore!” Roy commented, and I held back a laugh. That was brutal.
“Was my long hair that bad?”
“No- whom I kidding? Yes! Who created this fine art?” Isa replied with a grin, and I held the scissors in my hands with a proud smile. “Figured, you never liked long hair on boys,” she added.
“Nope,”
“I have to admit, you did a pretty good job, Divana. Thanks,” Lance spoke with a smile as his hand ran through his brand new short hair. He needed time to get used to it. This hairstyle suited his face and personality better.
“Girls, do you want to watch a movie?” Keri asked, and we nodded instantly. “Boys, sorry, but find something else to do. It will be a girl’s night out. Don’t come back here, sleep in your rented house for the night without Diva. Bye-bye!” she told them and pushed the boys out to the door.
“Okay, we will walk in the neighborhood for a while, and then we will sleep. It’s been a long day,” Dorian said, and they walked away.
“Let’s have fun!”
It had been a week since I cut Lance’s hair and the amazing girl’s night, and today Dylla will come over to hang out with us. “I can’t wait to see her opinion on his hair!” I squealed.
“I know, she will be swoon over him. I can’t wait to meet her, she seems like a nice person.” Isa said as we walked down the stairs to the kitchen, where the guys were hanging out. The kitchen talks were the best.
“Who’s coming over?” Roy asked as he drank his water.
“Dylla,” I replied and looked at Lance’s reaction. He almost choked on his sandwich. Dorian patted his back until he calmed down.
“Dylla’s coming here? Now?” Lance asked a bit in a panicking tone.
I grinned. “Yes, why?” I pretended to be a clueless cupid, and Isa snorted. I wished Keri was here, she would have teased him about it nonstop. Unfortunately, she had to do a double shift because two nurses were sick.
“No reason,” his weak response made Roy and Dorian catch on to what was going on. As they were about to comment on it, the doorbell rang. “I will get it,” Lance jumped and rushed to the front door. We followed suit and waited, a few steps behind. It was finally happening, but I did not think that Lance was bold enough to make that move. “Hello there,” he greeted, and I face-palmed. Really now?
“Hi, and you are…” Dylla trailed off as her eyes lit up. “Oh, Lance! You are the guy with the long hair, which is gone now. I almost did not recognize you, but you look good.”
We grinned at her reply and saw Lance’s hand, the one that was holding the doorknob, tighten. “Thank you, it’s nice of you to say that. Come on in, please,”
As she walked and saw me, I wiggled my eyebrows and gave her a hug. “I saw what you did there,” I whispered, and her cheeks turned red.
“Nice to see you too, Divana,” she said with a playful glare, and I chuckled. She was cute, and I thought that she and lance would be the perfect couple.
“Hey, I’m Ismarelda. Divana’s best friend,”
“Nice to really meet you, and as you probably heard of me, I am Dylla.” She sat on the couch, and Dorian pushed Lance to sit next to her. Well done, boy!
“Tell us about yourself, we haven’t really got the chance to know each other well,” I suggested as we all sat down.
She smiled. “I’m 20, and I teach little girls how to defend themselves, we need fighting skills here. You never know when danger will jump in on you, so you have to be prepared.”
“That’s awesome!” Isa stated. “Anything else about you that you would like to share?”
Dylla scratched the nape of her neck. “I’m adopted. I’m originally from Canada but moved here with the Paz’s family when my biological parents decided that they have had enough of me. I don’t consider them as my family anymore. Jino is my dad, Belmira is my mom, and Cidro’s my brother, and I have never been happier.” We did not say anything for a while because we were processing the information. This made me appreciate Paz’s family even more.
I related to her on a deeper level. “I was adopted too. However, my adoptive parents died in a car crash. I understand your love for them,” I confessed, and they gawked at me. They either did not know this or hearing it from the primary source was too much of a shock.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Dylla said and squeezed my hand.
“Don’t be, I have you guys now. Indeed, I haven’t been with you for a long time, but I consider who treats me like a true friend with no benefits family, even you, Dylla.” I was genuine, and it was a weird thing to expose my vulnerable side to anyone. Nevertheless, it felt like a rock was lifted off my shoulders. A person’s way to feel at ease was to speak.
As I was lost in my own mind, I felt hands on me. Dorian, Isa, Dylla, Roy, and Lance gave me a huge embrace. It made me feel suffocated and yet protected and loved.
