Chapter 2
Everyone was asleep, the village rested peacefully while the night sky twinkled with stars above and an almost full moon above. The summer air at night was warm but cool enough for me to wear a light jacket. Least that is becoming my common jacket during the night I wake up for some reason than find my way walking across the dirt through the village and onto the sand where the waves of water kiss the sand silently. Crickets are up as they too make sound.
The noise should be relaxing but I find myself restless at night wondering why.
I have been sitting in the sand with my legs crossed and arms out back balancing me while I lean backwards and looking at the stars. And huffed another sigh. The sand cool on my skin letting me know I am still here on earth. AS when I look to the night sky of stars, I feel I am being pulled into another world. A world that feels it was meant for me but not ready to accept me.
I close my eyes and breath taking the salty air while listening to the calming of waters as it tried to trickle up the hill towards my body. I open my eyes again and there is that odd familiar feeling of someone watching over me but yet nothing is there.
I again wonder why I wake up to odd nights and feel called to look up at the night sky. Something is off with me and I don’t know why. But oddly this particular night a feeling of dread now washes over me. The familiarity of the world above is gone and I feel something has happened or going to happen.
I shut my eyes and flash of blood mixed with screaming flashes before my eyes but barely lasts a second. Then its gone and the feeling is like it was barely there.
I scrunched my eyebrows together but shook it away and began to make my way back to the house. Brushing sand off my bottom hoping no signs of me going to the beach are visible. I am still trying to figure out this wake up at night.
I made my way into the cool night, but nicely temperature house, stepping up the silent creaking steps and made my way into the bedroom with Wolf still sound asleep hugging a empty space where my body will be.
I slip in feeling the softness of the sheets cuddling into Wolf and soon falling fast asleep again.
The light streamed into my closed eyelids, slowly I opened them and saw that my vision was only partly blinded as it was still dark in the room. But the morning gave the trees and leaves a flicker of reflection. I laid there, staring out the window up into the glowing pink now to red partly cloudy sky that soon would be turning blue with a hint of grey from the clouds.
Moving myself on the bed as it dipped only slightly, I looked to see where wolf would be and his spot was empty with just tangled sheets left behind. Too a moment for me to actually register where he actually may be till, I began to smell pancakes and bacon begin to linger into the room. He must be cooking breakfast for me and the kids. A slight smile tugged at my lips and made my way out of bed already feeling cool but a bit of warm summer air creep in.
Dressed to look good as pretty sure we would be heading out today, I made my way down stairs but slight slowed at I neared the bottom step as I could hear tow voices, one Wolf and other Madam’s. Scrunching my eyebrows together wondering why she was here and so early in the morning.
I guess I would find the answer soon enough as I made my way to the back the house where voices became louder, and the smell of bliss became stronger.
“—and what if she doesn’t want to go?” Wolf asked. I was nearing the threshold and could see Wolfs back as he stood at the stove while I could not see Madam as she may be closer to back door or be around the corner of the threshold.
“You know you cannot deny captains request when comes to his command—”
“Mummy!” Alice squealed just as I stepped near the threshold. She ran at me and I prepared myself as she slowed but jumped. I caught her in my arms giving a squeeze and placed her on my hip now fully entering the kitchen and dining area.
Wolf peered over his shoulder giving a morning smile while Madam sat at the edge of the table hands folded together looking annoyed. I placed Alice and down and she ran back to her spot where Junior was closer to Wolf. He looked up and beamed a morning smile to that I returned one. Though I remained at the threshold.
“What am I missing and where would I not want to go…also” I glanced at the two children who didn’t seem to be aware I pointing at their direction, “Is this conversation appropriate for these two?”
Wolf peered over this shoulder again and he seemed surprised there, yet he been cooking. Soon my own stomach began to grumble for food and mouth was watering as the smell of food was strong.
“Two and two?” Wolf asked flipping two pancakes and bacon onto a place and serving it to me.
I gladly took it and sat down while allowing the savouring taste to drown me in bliss and taste.
After a few more bites I looked to Madam, “Well?” I acknowledge my question again. She have a grim smiled looked over to Wolf and back to me as if she wanted me to read her mind.
“You have been requested by Captain of Investigations to come to the human world, more specifically a high school you attended when human” She said it so bluntly as if she didn’t care if it sounded great or not.
I finished chewing, “Why me?...and what happened?”
Madam eyes averted to the children this time with unease.
I brought my attention to and saw that they were eating and playing with their food. Wolf sneered slightly just enough for them to stop. He then turned the stove off and ushered them to take their food with them to the living room.
“But food stays in the kitchen” Junior protested when they were at the threshold that had the hallway leading to the front of the house.
I turned to him and gave a smile, “Just this one time we will break the rules.
He stared at me for a moment then half dragged his little sister with him to the front of the house.
Wolf sat next to me but huffed a sigh as if he now was able to relax.
“Two children enough?” Madam chuckled.
Wolf grinned for a second but crossed his arms and leaned forward on the table. I turned my attention back to Madam.
“So, what happened I am I needed, something you could not say in front of the children” I went back to my hard tone of voice.
Madam huffed a sigh straightened her already straight back and spoke, “There has been a murder and why you been you requested is because they believe it is connected to you and others. For whatever reason I do not know.”
I stared at her wondering but also sick to my stomach trying to understand, now somewhat regretting what I just ate. But I wondered who and why was murdered to also why I am needed, what possible connection do I have?
My curious thought did keep me in the wanting to know who it was and to also see the crime scene itself, if that is what they called it.
But another was a part I was scared to know I been summoned and why this murder is connected to me.
“What do you mean connected?”
Madam somehow released tension for some reason.
“Because something was on the body, and when Captain and Brock saw it. Brock put some pieces together since it was your old high school.”
“That could mean anything to anyone” Wolf intervened, I brought my attention to him and could tell he was annoyed but why?
“Yes, could mean anything, but the captain noticed closer and he is a bit suspicious, that the item on the body specifically for you, may connect you to it…not as a suspect, they don’t believe you killed, just the person that might be able help solve this.”
I narrowed my eyes scrunching my eyebrows in confusion. “Why can’t you just tell me what it is?”
Madam tilted her head in acknowledgement, “Yes or you could see if for yourself…they are waiting on you anyways…” she added the rest as a quiet whisper hoping I wouldn’t hear it.
I gave a grim smiled, “Fine, I will go, Wolf” I turned to him and beat me to my request.
“I have stuff today but I will get my mother to look after them.”
I smiled in appreciation, knowing this may not be easy or smooth day. A fear of hollowness or something began to creep in me.
