But it was only a sliver. As Beatrice's period of slumber grew longer, even that sliver of feeling was worn away completely.
When Hendrix learned of her awakening, his first reaction wasn't joy but strategizing. How could he use her fragile state to push Noelle into seeing her and igniting Noelle's guilt?
Hendrix knew this wasn't how a normal person would think, but it was exactly the kind of mindset he had been taught since childhood.
From an early age, Beatrice had focused solely on teaching im how to be a successful businessman-how to stay composed and level-headed so he could make the right call no matter the situation.
She had done her job well, and he had succeeded in becoming an exceptional businessman. But she'd never taught him how to be a normal son, which meant Hendrix had no clue what a normal reaction was supposed to be.
Including now.
Beatrice quickly stepped in front of him. "What did you do to Noelle?"
Hendrix lifted his eyes to look at her.
Beatrice gritted her teeth. "You forced her to marry you, didn't you? And all the chaos at Elm Group recently that's your doing, too, isn't it?"
"Yes," answered Hendrix simply.
Beatrice's expression darkened to the extreme, "Do you even know what you're doing? Why are you doing this?"
"You're asking me why?" Hendrix seemed a bit puzzled. "Weren't you the one who told me to marry Noelle in the first place? You said she should be my wife. I'm just following your instructions, no?" "Don't give me that nonsense. Since when did you ever listen to me?" said Beatrice in a low voice. Hendrix fell silent.
Seeing his expression, Beatrice softened her voice. "Hendrix, I was wrong before, You and Noelle... You're not right for each other. Besides, you're already divorced. Let the past stay in the past. If you want to remarry, I can help you find someone else"
"Why are you so protective of Noelle?" Hendrix interrupted her. "Not just now-it's always been this way." Even when she had decided to end her own life, the past person she chose to see wasn't him, but Noelle. It was a question Hendrix had wanted to ask her for a long time, but he held back until now. At this moment, though, he couldn't stop himself.
Beatrice held his gaze for a moment before finally speaking
"I just think she... has had a hard life. Everything she went through before was already so difficult, so I only hoped that she could have a happier life in the future.
"Hendrix, I know the reason you insist on being with her isn't because of some so-called promise. It's because you like her.
"But Hendrix, liking someone doesn't mean you have to be with them. And using every possible means to force her to stay by your side-well, that's even less right. If you truly love her, then you should want her to be happy more than anyone else, so-"

Before Beatrice could finish, Hendrix suddenly laughed.
Then, he countered, "And how do you know she won't be happy with me?"
Beatrice had no answer.
Without sparing her another glance, Hendrix climbed into his car. But just before driving off, he rolled
down the window and said, "And as for loving her enough to want her to be happy with someone else? I can't relate. All I know is she's my wife, and that makes her mine.
"I won't let anyone take her away from me!"
