Chapter 91
Chapter 91
He brought a cup of hot milk to Josephine.
Josephine said to him, “Alright, I’m going to sleep. Julian, carry your wife downstairs now.”
Alexandra gave Josephine an aggrieved look and slightly pouted her lips.
Julian noticed her cute expression and realized that she seemed reluctant to leave with him.
He walked over, bent down, and picked Alexandra up from the bed.
Alexandra was so embarrassed that she wished she could crawl outside her body.
Julian felt that she went stiff and was very resistant. He smiled slightly and said to Josephine, “Grams, good night.”
“Good night!”
As Josephine watched Julian leave with Alexandra in his arms, her lips tilted up in a loving smile.
She knew Julian very well and could tell that Julian truly cared about Alexandra.
The fact that he had never invited his grandmother to his house but brought Alexandra here spoke volumes.
He wouldn’t have let Josephine stay if she hadn’t insisted.
However, not only had he brought Alexandra here, but he also took meticulous care of her.
Walking out of Josephine’s room, Alexandra whispered, “Mr. Ranford, you can put me down now.”
Julian lowered his eyes and stared at her face. “Okay. If that’s what you want.”
As he spoke, he made as if to drop his hands.
“Don’t!”
Startled, Alexandra snapped her eyes shut and wrapped her arms tightly around Julian’s neck, pressing her body tightly against his.
She thought that Julian would let her fall to the ground.
Squeezing her eyes shut in silence for a few seconds, she realized that she was still in Julian’s steady arms.
She opened one eye and saw Julian looking down at her with a teasing smile on his lips.
Alexandra opened the other eye and felt her face on fire, saying nothing more.
After the two of them returned to the master bedroom, Julian placed Alexandra on the bed and took a step back, staring at her bothered face.
She looked around with her glistening black eyes, trying to conjure a sofa out of thin air.
Julian knew what she was thinking but remained silent.
Alexandra swallowed and said to him hesitantly, “Mr. Ranford, is there another bedroom in the house?”
Julian said honestly, “No. I don’t come here often, so originally this master bedroom was the only room to sleep in. I cleaned
the one upstairs the night before you came over.”
up
Julian said that with a sincere expression.
Chapter 91
I see, Alexandra replied as her gaze drifted to the floor.
Before she said anything, Julian said slowly. “It’s already autumn. The floor is very cold. If you sleep on the floor, you’ll catch a cold the next day.”
Being seen through, Alexandra grunted under her breath.
The two of them fell silent.
Alexandra thought about it and asked, “Mr. Ranford, how about I go out and sleep on the sofa?”
Julian looked into her eyes and analyzed the pros and cons without changing his expression. “Grams sleeps lightly. She sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night and walks around the house. If she finds out that either of us sleeps on the sofa in the living room, chances are that she will have a heart attack.”
Alexandra looked at Julian despondenty and looked like she was about to cry.
Julian felt sorry for putting her in such a dilemina.
“Then what should we do?” Alexandra was at her wits‘ end.
Julian sighed and replied, “I don’t know.”“
Alexandra lowered her head and went quiet.
Julian took a glance at her and said lamely, “How about this? I’ll sleep on the floor. You don’t want to catch a cold after spraining your ankle. I’m a man, so guess sleeping on the cold floor for one night won’t be a big deal. I may catch a cold but I’ll be fine after taking some pills. Hope I still have cold medicine in this house…”
As he spoke, he walked to the wardrobe beside him and tried to find a blanket.
Alexandra turned her head away and relented several seconds later. Julian had taken extra care of her these past few days and she could not bring herself to let him sleep on the floor.
Besides, Julian was her boss!
“Umm… Mr. Ranford,” Alexandra called out in a low voice.
Julian was waiting for her to give in and stopped rummaging for the blanket. Turning around to face her, he made a show of looking confused and asked, “Yes?”
Alexandra looked at his face for a long while and wondered why Julian looked so pitiful tonight.
In the end, she compromised and said with her head down, “Let’s…sleep on the bed together.”
Julian saw Alexandra loll her head and an amused smile appeared on his lips for a fleeting moment.
He replied innocently, Are you sure? You don’t have to worry about me. I’m fine with sleeping on the floor.”
“Mr. Ranford.” Alexandra lifted her head, her eyes flickering. “How can I let you sleep on the floor? You’ve been taking care of me these days. Come and get on the bed. You’ll need another blanket.”
With that said, Alexandra lowered her head again.
Inviting him to sleep with her made her squirm.
She wasn’t suggesting anything and just didn’t think it was proper to let her boss sleep on the floor at the risk of catching at
cold.
Alexandra repeated to herself that she shouldn’t feel embarrassed about it.
Julian looked conflicted. “Then… Alright. Thank you for being willing to share the bed.”
He turned around and shoved back the blanket he just dug out. Then, he took out a light gray quilt and placed it on the other side of the bed.
Alexandra quickly moved to the opposite side as if she couldn’t wait to draw a line between them.
The young lady kept her head down and her cheeks turned crimson.
Julian took that in but pretended that he didn’t. I’ll go run the water for you. Go to sleep after washing up. I have work to do in the study.”
Julian went to the bathroom and left.
As soon as he left, Alexandra hurriedly took a shower, turned off the lights, and went to sleep.
She thought that once she fell asleep, she would not feel awkward.
Whether Julian would be awkward was none of her business.
Julian didn’t leave the study until he guessed that Alexandra had fallen asleep.
When he returned to the bedroom, Alexandra was already fast asleep.
Two–thirds of the bed was left for him. The young lady curled up by the edge of the big bed with the quilt wrapped around her body.
Julian tiptoed to the bathroom to wash up and returned twenty minutes later. By the time he came back, Alexandra had turned over and rolled to the middle of the bed.
Her bandage–covered foot was outside the quilt.
Julian gently climbed onto the bed and tucked her in.
Then, he crawled under his blanket and turned off the lights.
At this time, Alexandra was sound asleep but Julian was wide awake.
Before Alexandra fell asleep, she had thought that Julian would be embarrassed.
But was he?
The answer was no, not at all.
He actually felt lucky and happy.
Being close to Alexandra and staying by her side for a little bit longer actually made him happy.
This kind of happiness was pure and had nothing to do with interests. Julian had never experienced it before.
He was happy simply because of another person’s existence.
Immersed in his thoughts, he heard the swishing sound of the covers. Then, he felt the mattress beside him sink. Alexandra moved into his arms again.
It was not the first time that this had happened. When she was asleep and beside him, she could always find her way into his arms as if she got some sort of radar in her brain.
Julian wondered whether she only did this to him or it was just a habit.
