Chapter 63
Chapter 63
Gabbie POV
My back hit the watch and the current sucked me under. The icy cold water attacked me at every angle. I was powerless to fight my invisible enemy. The rush of the water dragged me forward. There was nothing for me to hold on to and no air to aid my attempt to stay alive. The dark blue abyss of water threatened to make a permanent resident of its mysterious abode.
My n
My need for air intensified. I kicked my legs and pushed out my arms but I couldn’t reach the surface
in time.
I felt like a rundown car trying to start. Every time I tried to wake up my body protested. My bones cried and I couldn’t stop trembling. The orange sky was my last memory before I blacked out.
When I fluttered my eyes open again I felt heat on my back. My clothes were still wet and my stuck to my face. A large jacket covered my chest and part of my face.
You’re finally awake,” a deep masculine voice said.
I gasped and jumped up. My bones scolded me for the sudden action.
hair
I scooted against the tree trunk. I held the jacket to my chest and then tossed it away because it wasn’t
mine.
“Who are you?”
I looked up and a million stars gazed down at me.
I was alive. Harlow won’t be happy about this.
“Relax, kid. You’re safe with me.”
I scoffed. “I don’t know that. I don’t know you.”
His eyes were a light shade of blue they almost seemed silver. His black hair was white on the shaved. sides. What was he doing out here in the middle of nowhere? It had me wondering where I was.
A flame burned between me and the man whose clothes were also drying. His leather boots had been left beside a tree.
Did you save me?” I asked in a small voice.
He stared at me not in a creepy way but it did make me uncomfortable how intense his stare was.
“That’s what I’ve been trying to do your entire life. Save you.”
“I don’t understand.”
He stood allowing me to see his staggering height.

“It’s okay. You don’t remember but maybe you remember my name. Erik Chambers.”
“Dad?”

“Want to tell me why you jumped off a cliff?”
I hadn’t called a man Dad in so many years now here the actual man was gutting a fish so we could have it for dinner.
“I didn’t- well I did but it was either that or-” Baxter’s gross smile flashed in my mind.
I believe Harlow would have allowed him to have his way with me.
“I was trying to get away,” I said. “Never mind! How are you here? I thought you were dead! Mom thought you were dead.”
I grunted. “Mom, huh? I left to keep you safe.”
You couldn’t call? You let a little girl believe her Earl

abandoned her?” I spat.
“That was never my intention. The nature of my job caught up to me.”
“What job?”
He looked up from the fish. “That’s enough for one day. You need to eat. I’ll get you back to the academy tomorrow.”
So I could face Harlow, Kade must worried out of his mind. I rubbed my chest thinking about him. A part of me wasn’t sure I wanted to go back to the academy not with a target on my head.
“This is no five–star hotel but I’ve had worse,” Dad said.
“Because of your job.”
“Former job Gabbie. I’m retired now.”
“Then why are you running!”
He sighed heavily. “I’m going to clean this then we’re going to eat.”
I watched him carry the massive fish off to the river. It felt like a dream seeing him walk around and talk. When I was younger I would sit on the door waiting for him to come home. Eventually, Mom told me to give up that he wasn’t coming back.
Now he saved my life and I didn’t know how to feel. I wish there was a way to turn off my emotions because I couldn’t do this right now.

I woke to the smell of smoke. I peeled the jacket I used as a blanket back.
Dad had a tin pot on the fire. He sipped from another tin.
“Tea?”
“You’re very resourceful, aren’t you?”
“You pick up a few things. We need to talk.”
me but you hurt
“Darn right.” I sat up and crossed my legs. “Why are you out here? You left to protect me
me even more.”
“It is easier to cut ties. That way no one would track you to get to me. Anya and I found ways to communicate and she always told me you were fine.”
“Mom rán too-”
“Anya.” Dad rolled his eyes.
“Mom. I dragged out the word. “Let without a trace. She won’t even answer my calls.”
Dad slammed the tin on the ground. “She–devil. I bet she drained your trust fund too.”
I have a trust fund?
“There’s a lot more you need to know but now isn’t the time. I’m out here tracking a wolf. It showed up on my raider a year ago and it’s here now. It’s extremely dangerous a cross between two things that weren’t supposed to mix.”
I swallowed. I knew exactly what he was talking about
“You hunt monsters? Is that it?”
His features darkened. He snapped his head over his shoulders and stood suddenly.

“What about you?”
“I’ve been doing this a long time, kid. Don’t worry.”
A howl cut through the forest. The birds flew into the sky and howl echoed.
Wolves. That could be Kade. He was searching for me. Another howl broke those. My heart warmed. That could be Alex.
