Chapter Dr. Simon
“Dr. Simon! I am glad you got here so soon. The subjects are here for you,” the scientist with brown curly hair walked over to him as soon as he walked in.
Dr. Simon was pretty tall probably six foot five. He was wearing a white lab coat like everyone else but he had a black vest and tie, as well as a white dress shirt on underneath it. His hair was short, black, and spiky. He wore glasses like most others in the room. He quickly glanced over everyone in the room while straightening out his coat.
Clearly, he is the one in charge around here.
His eyes locked with us from across the room, “Interesting... I didn’t think it would be a boy and a girl. Or so young for that matter. Have you already checked up on them?”
Dr. Simon kept his gaze on us while the other scientist talked, “Yes. I have sent all of it to your tablet.”
He tilted his head in curiosity as he locked between me and Luna, “What have they been doing while I was gone?”
The other scientist followed Dr. Simon’s gaze to us, “Oh they have been doing much of anything... they moved closer to each other when they were left alone. They mostly keep their heads down, except for the occasional glance at each other.”
I glanced over at Luna to see her tensed up again.
Please, stay calm.
“Have they talked to each other at all?”
“Not that I have seen or heard... but the guards swore they were talking to each other while they were being chased.”
Dr. Simon looked over at his colleague, “Hmm... that is strange. Thanks Dr. Cory.”
Dr. Cory went back to his work at his desk. Dr. Simon still focused on us. He pushed his glasses up on his nose and began to walk over to us.
Luna’s breathing sped up and I swear I could hear her heartbeat. I was restraining myself with all I had to not try to talk to her.
Dr. Simon pulled up a stool and sat in front of us. He turned to me first, “Hello, I am Dr. Simon from the CDC. What is your name?”
I lowered my gaze to my feet and kept my mouth closed.
He sighed, “Fine. I will run you guys out then.”
He started pressing buttons and pulling up screens like Dr. Cory.
A picture of me and Luna pulled up, “So... you are Ben Foster and you are Luna Sora.”
He ran a hand through his hair, “Look, I want to help you guys. You are confused about what is happening... You two are the only people in this whole city that are acting normal. You are so young too... your parents are probably out there worried for you Ben. And Luna your sister.”
Luna let out a whimper and put her knees to her chest, burying her head down into them.
No... Please stay with me.
I couldn’t take it anymore. I lifted my hand and pressed it against the holographic side.
Luna’s eyes widened when she looked up but she did the same, laying her where mine was, and smiled.
Dr. Simon muttered to himself, “Interesting... they understand each other.”
Luna exhaled a giant breath relaxing a bit as she slid her hand down from the side.
I wish I could hold her hand but this still seems to work.
I slid my hand back down looking over at Dr. Simon who looked astonished by our little connection thing we did. He snapped himself back to reality, “Can you guys understand me?”
I looked over at Luna who gave me a smile and a small nod that he didn’t notice.
I let out a sigh and looked over at Dr. Simon, giving him a nod.
His eyes grew so wide that I thought they were going to fall out of his head, “When they said you guys were acting like normal humans... I didn’t think it was going to be this much... They said you can talk... can you?”
Luna shook her head.
She was right. It’s bad enough that he knows we can understand him.
I just stared at him then looked down at my feet.
He seemed think meant that we couldn’t, which was fine with me, “That’s okay... you guys can still understand things... that is good-”
I zoned out on him deciding not to give him anymore information, so I looked at Luna. She just looked back at me and gave a small undetectable smile, except I noticed it perfectly.
Hopefully he won’t ask many more questions.
He finally stopped talking and stared at both of us again with curiosity. He then stood up, adjusting his coat, “I will come back later... and I will see about getting you guys bigger spaces to be. It looks like you are cramped in there, I am sorry about that.”
He walked away from us, but not too far, and sat down at what I was assuming to be his desk. He picked up a tablet and started scrolling through the screens in front of him. One of them I noticed was three pictures of brains. The one farthest from us was glowing on about half of the brain, and the next one had almost the whole thing glowing, but the last was completely glowing. I looked at in confusion.
Who brains are those? And why are they glowing? I don’t understand any of this medical stuff. I just hope we can get out of these boxes. My legs are cramping up.
Luna tapped at the side, making me look up. She mouth the words Thanks for calming me down. Get some sleep.
I smiled at her and mouth the words You too.
She smiled back and curled up into a ball of her side, closing her eyes.
I decided to stay awake for a bit. I couldn’t really sleep because every time someone heard us move, everyone in the room looked up at us. Also all the noise and constant talking was annoying after days of silence.
After about ten minutes, my boredom drifted me to sleep.
