Chapter Searching For Nothing
"I've got to be missing something, I've just got to, Em. What if I go back to the other pack and do another investigation? There has to be something that I didn't smell before." She paced back and forth in front of me as I reached for her hand, stopping her in her tracks.
"Kam, there is nothing else to look for. Stop being so hard on yourself no one could pick up a scent." I replied sympathetically.
She ripped her hand from mine and walked off towards the house. Feeling her immense disappointment in herself, Deacon followed behind her but she turned quickly and said, "I just want to be alone, please Deacon."
Seeing the pain in his eyes from her response made me feel bad for him but I knew she wasn't doing it to hurt him, she just needed some time apart from him right now and he must have understood because he shook his head and let her go. He turned around and came back besides us as we stood around waiting for further instructions from Bishop.
After watching him scan the border for the hundredth time today, I sighed and said, “We’ve been searching for a week Bishop and we haven’t gotten any closer to these savages than we were when we started. Is there any way we could be doing this for nothing"
"Or maybe they are just trying to scare us or taunt us to see if we will attack first?” Deacon huffed.
My eyes were still trained on Bishops, pleading for him to tell me we were being overly cautious but I knew the truth.
“I wish I could tell you it’s just a precaution but that’s just not the case. These wolves are getting more daring in their attempts and even though no one has been attacked again, they are still out there, waiting for the first sign of weakness to strike and I will not let it happen again.”
The burden he had just taken upon himself was tremendous but the surrounding packs were more than gracious for his protection. In fact, several of them requested to join our pack and had already sworn their loyalty if they were to be accepted.
“Is there anywhere else we can look?”
“We’ve scoured every inch of our territory along with three others and left no corner unlooked, I promise there is nowhere else they could be hiding.” Deacon said in an annoyed tone.
Everyone was exhausted from putting in so much work trying to find the culprit responsible for the attacks and their hopes had been shattered day after day, making them loose confidence that we might find them. If these animals weren’t stopped, who knows what kind of damage they could do, especially since they were already so cunning.
“Let’s turn in for the night. The guards are continuously monitoring the perimeter so we should be good until the morning.” Bishop said as he stormed off leaving us staring at each other feeling conflicted as if we really should be getting rest when we were in such a detrimental time of turmoil.
I nodded my head at the others letting them know they should do as he said then I turned and followed behind him. His shoulders were tense and fumes of anger were radiating off his body so I kept my distance. Once we made it to the house, he tore the door open and stomped up the stairs two at a time while I warily walked behind him.
When he reached his office, he lost it. He picked up one of the wooden chairs and threw it against the wall, breaking it into a million tiny pieces then he turned and shoved everything off his desk before throwing his head back and letting out an ear piercing growl.
Although the site before me should have sent me screaming in the other direction, it hurt my heart to see him this way. Taking a few steps towards him, I placed my hand on his arm, feeling him relax from my touch. He hung his head low and waves of hesitancy turned in my stomach.
"We're going to find them and when we do, we will torture them until they tell us who they are working for. If they don't cooperate, we will kill each and every one we find until the weasel responsible for this comes crawling from his hiding spot and begs us to spare his life for the heinous crimes he's committed."
"And if we don't?" His tone was pitiful and defeated.
Brushing the hair from his eyes, I grabbed his face in my hands and forced him to look at me. "We will, even if I have to die trying, we will find them."
Placing a peck on his lips, I released my hold on him and turned to walk out the door but he grabbed my wrist spinning me back around and said, "I will never let anything happen to you. I will die before I let anyone even so much as think about doing anything to you." He said in a desperate tone as he pressed his forehead to mine.
My heart began to swell with so much love I thought it would burst. We stood in his office, locked in each others arms as if we were trying to make everything around us disappear. I wanted to return to that joyful time when we were newly mated and things were perfect but that just wasn't the case.
Threats, and all sorts of other dangers, were always a hazard that came with this job and we were the ones who were responsible for protecting our pack but we couldn't keep them safe if we didn't know what we were fighting against.
"I need to call Winston. Maybe he will have some insight as to what we should do next." He turned around and stared at the mess on the floor before sighing and started picking it all up.
I placed my hand on his, stopping him from cleaning up and said, "Let me do this, you call Winston."
Smiling at me with that charming smile, he replied, "I don't know what I did to deserve you but I will forever be thankful to the moon goddess for giving me you."
I winked at him as I collected all the pieces of paper and various office supplies that were scattered all over the floor while he talked with Winston on the phone. It only took me a few minutes to organize the things on his desk then once I was done, I left him to talk in private.
Walking to our room, I tried to think of something that we could do to find these losers but every idea I had was even more stupid than the one before. We desperately needed help, and hopefully Winston would be able to give us some or we would be on our own. I knew Bishop could handle something like this but my biggest fear was that I would make him weak and if anything ever happened, I would never forgive myself.
Poor Kam, she's too hard on herself. I know she is good but you can't fight something that can't be found.
Will Em and Bishop figure this out or will they get blindsided by the evil that lurks just beyond their reach?
