"And is she willing to leave?" Harper pressed. "I've looked into her background-she's had a tough life. Don't treat her unfairly. Make sure to compensate her properly."

Remembering Caroline's casual agreement along with her tone and expression when she said she only. married him to be widowed, his face darkened.

"She'll leave if she's willing, and even if she's not, she'll still have to leave!"

Harper nodded. "I've already picked out a good girl for you. She's kind and pure-definitely wife material and a perfect mother. But, you know, with this being your second marriage, it might be a bit unfair to her." Only Harper could get away with saying something like that.

Forget being married twice-even if David had been married three or five times, women would still be throwing themselves at him.

Besides, he already knew exactly who he wanted to marry.

Out of respect for his mother, David didn't argue and just responded with a dismissive "Mhmm."

Harper picked up on his reluctance and tried to persuade him. "I'm set on this girl becoming my daughter- in-law. David, during my years at the orphanage, she was always there by my side, taking care of me. She even saved my life once. That year, I fell into the water, and it was her who pulled me out, performed CPR, and rushed me to the hospital..."

"I got it, Mom. I have a meeting to attend."

David ended the call and tossed his phone aside.

Because of Harper's humble origins, she had never been accepted by the Ellison family. She had lived and worked at the orphanage ever since giving birth to David. He felt deep guilt and responsibility toward her.

However, that didn't mean she could meddle in his personal relationships and marriage.

As for the girl his mother mentioned, he would find some time to meet her, give her a substantial sum of money, and ensure she let go of any unrealistic expectations. He'd guarantee her financial security for life as repayment for saving his mother.

Hopefully, she would understand her place.

Caroline, on the other hand, was very "understanding." At least, she pretended to be.

An adopted daughter who managed to climb the social ladder after she took over the Ellison family. There was no way she'd give up her position.

Speaking of Caroline...

David glanced at the burn on his arm, where tiny blisters had formed.

"Mr. David, you're injured!" William exclaimed in alarm. "What happened? I'll call a doctor immediately!" 1/2

David pressed his lips into a thin line, his eyes flashing with irritation.

It was that foolish woman, Caroline!

When he was bedridden and unable to move, she had carelessly placed a kettle of hot water right next to his arm.

She probably thought he was on death's door and wouldn't feel a thing, so she didn't bother paying attention.

Bringing good luck?

He was lucky she hadn't killed him outright!

Meanwhile, at the orphanage, Caroline sneezed-twice loudly.

She rubbed her arms, feeling a shiver run down her spine.

As evening fell, Caroline finally prepared to leave. Harper enthusiastically walked her out. "Come visit whenever you can. Next time, I'll have my son meet you."

"Hahaha, goodbye, ma'am!"

Caroline smiled awkwardly, giving a vague response. She'd deal with this for now and worry about the rest

later.

When she returned to the Ellison residence, the house was cold and eerily quiet. Caroline went straight to the master bedroom.

While reaching for her pajamas in the walk-in closet, a deep, cold voice startled her from behind. "Where were you all afternoon?"

"Ah!"

Caroline jumped in fright, spinning around to see David's striking yet aloof face. She panicked, unsure where to put her hands and feet.

In her flustered state, she stepped on her own foot, lost her balance, and fell backward.

David stood there with his arms crossed, watching her fall without the slightest intention of helping. 洄
