Chapter 42
Kira closed her eyes for what felt like only a moment. When she opened them again Domascus was by her side holding her hand. She smiled at him.
“Morning,” He said. “Feeling better?”
“Much better,” She said as she sat up. “I’d like to get out of this bed.”
“I think I can help with that.” He stood and held out his hand.
Kira took his hand and put her feet on the floor. He steadied her as she stood for the first time on her new feet. She looked up at him and cussed under her breath.
“You’re still too tall,” She giggled.
“Come on now,” He smiled. “I’ve got things to show you.”
The first place Domascus took Kira was to the bathroom. She stared at her new self in awe. Her eyes were still a pale green but her hair was a bright red and long down her back.
“Meet Ciara,” He said proudly.
“How’d we get like this?” She pondered.
“A car accident claimed Ciara and her husband Derek. We slipped in that way.” He explained.
“Car?” She asked confused.
He laughed, “Come on I’ll show you.
Domascus helped Kira across the room. He stood her before the window and yanked back the curtain. Her eyes went wide as she gasped loud enough to startle the passing nurse.
“Shit,” She hissed as she took it all in.
There were buildings taller than trees lining the river that cut through the heart of town. The roads were black and on them rode beastly machines that moved of their own power. There were no horses, no carts, the markets were enclosed shops encased in glass that people stood in front of with their noses pressed in.
“It’s a whole new world out there waiting for you Kira. Full of magic and mystery that wait to be experienced. The rules of this world differ from ours in extreme ways. It’s near impossible for people like us to be found.” He said proudly as he put his arm around her.
“We’re free,” She smiled with a tear in her eye.
“Yes, my love. We are.” He kissed her softly and held her close.
“I can’t wait to see it all.” She laughed as she pressed her hand to the cold glass.
“And you will. Once we get you well enough to leave this place.” He laughed. “Until then, back to bed with you Ciara.”
“Derek,” She smiled.
He put his arm around her, “Yes my love?”
“Just testing it out.” She chuckled.
He put his hands on her cheeks and pulled her into a kiss. It made the hair on the back of her neck stand up and her skin tingled. When he backed away she was all smiles.
“Well, at least that magic still exists.” She replied breathless.
“That it does Ciara.” He replied shivering with desire.
“When can we leave this place and see the world that is ours?” She asked as he led her back to the bed.
“You have never been to this place before. Ciara had memories of an entire life. I can tell you enough of that life that they will call you healed enough to return to it.” He explained.
“Good, tell me everything.” She smiled, leaned back on the pillow and closed her eyes so she could just listen.
“We are Ciara and Derek Price.” He began as he took her hand.
“It is the year 2012 and we come from the town of Cheboygan Michigan. It is not the same as the place you see outside. That town is Petoskey and we were flown here by helicopter from the accident.” He continued.
“You lost me there.” She chuckled. “What is this you speak of, flying and helicopter?”
“It is a machine that soars through the air like a dragonfly.” He smiled.
“Interesting, wish I could recall such a thing.” She smiled.
“You will. The memories are all there. Once you seek them out you will know many things.” He stated.
“Then perhaps that is what I should do. When I rest I shall look for the knowing.” She replied.
“Then rest now and learn so we may return to our home and begin this life we have been given.” He kissed her forehead. “I love you Ciara Price.”
“I love you Derek Price.” She smiled.
“Now, close your eyes, think of nothing but what I have told you of this place.” He said gently rubbing her hair.
“Mh huh,” She muttered as she began to drift off.
“Remember everything of Ciara’s life until you become her. Strip away all thoughts of who you once were.” He whispered in her ear.
“There was no Kira, there was no Avalon. Forget it all my beloved. All there is now is who you will become. Everything else was a fanciful dream. Sleep now and when you wake all those things will be gone from you.” He smiled as she began to snore gently.
Domascus smiled, knowing it had been done. He was now Derek and she was his wife. Avalon was no more.
