Chapter 120 A Trap Set for Me
Seeing Jack's anxious expression, I couldn't help but clap my hands mockingly.
"Mom and Dad really should check if the hospital made a mistake when they brought me home. Maybe you two are the real pair of siblings here."
As soon as I finished, I looked at Jack's darkened expression, my smile still in place.
"But you wouldn't be happy to hear that, would you?"
Jack immediately caught the sarcasm in my tone and glanced at Elsa nervously. When he saw that she wasn't reacting, he let out a quiet sigh of relief.
I observed this frantic moment, and I couldn't help but close my eyes in frustration.
At this point, he was still worried about Elsa catching on to his ulterior motives. But the truth was, Elsa had known for a long time that Jack liked her. In fact, she had been using that to her advantage.
Otherwise, with her clumsy methods, she would have been kicked out long ago and probably sent off to some remote place.
As Jack finally quieted down, I shifted my attention to Elsa. "I'm getting a divorce from Jeremiah. Isn't this exactly what you want? How about this? Once we're divorced, you can wait for him at the city clerk's office. Once we're done at the courthouse, you and him can go to the city clerk's office."
Elsa's eyes flickered with a hint of excitement, but she quickly shook her head. "No, Jane, it's not like that. The reason I've been meeting with Jeremiah is to convince him to reconcile with you faster. I want you two to get back together."
I turned my gaze away and looked out the window. "It's pointless."
As long as there was a third person between Elsa and me, her fake act would never drop. Her behavior was so nauseating, I could hardly stand it.
Thankfully, there was no traffic, and in just a few minutes, we reached the villa.
Jeremiah was standing at the door, seemingly waiting for us.
After I got out of the car, he walked toward me, but his gaze kept drifting toward Elsa. When he finally stood before me, he looked directly at me.
"You know my mom's health isn't good. You'd better know your place."
It seemed he was here to warn me.
It appeared that after the humiliation Quinton suffered the last time he was here, he had sent his mother, Beata Wade, this time. Beata, who had been in poor health for some time, was now tasked with coming to speak with me.
Beata had been one of the kinder members of the Cornell family toward me. Since marrying Jeremiah, she had never used her position as my mother-in-law to make things difficult for me. She would even have the kitchen prepare some of my favorite dishes from time to time.
She would often take me to various high-society events with other affluent women. But these small favors couldn't make up for the huge issues between Jeremiah and me.
Whenever I had a conflict with Jeremiah, she would always side with him and ask me to be patient.
I knew Beata was Jeremiah's mother, and that was understandable. So, I simply treated her as Jeremiah's mother—a figure deserving of respect as an elder.
"I don't need you to say that," I replied calmly, lifting my head just in time to see his gaze fall back on Elsa. "By the way, Elsa just said that if we don't divorce, she'll agree to never see you again."
Elsa froze, her face turning pale. "I..."
She instinctively wanted to explain but withdrew her gaze when she saw me. In the end, she just pressed her lips together, looking aggrieved.
Jeremiah snorted coldly, "Even if she said that, it was because of you. The company needs Elsa. We can avoid each other privately, but professionally, we can't escape."
He gave me a haughty look. "If you don't want a divorce, just say it. No need for all this drama. As long as your attitude is sincere, I might still forgive you."
I silently watched his retreating figure, shaking my head in disbelief. Who could wake him up from his delusions?
