Chapter 7: Beating the Odds
I told mom and dad to relax as mac shined his lights and I said this is Mac, the cyborg who's helped us get this far. Mom and dad looked at each other in disbelief as I tell Mac these are my parents and grandma, and they are non-hostile targets. Mac scanned my parents before setting down our bag from the trunk which had extra blasters and real guns if needed and as we put on our utility belts and armed our blasters, our parents stood there looking horrified at us. Mom said "how many people have you two killed?" and I said, "relax mom they're blasters and we've kept them on level 3, which is the maximum stun setting, and levels 4 and 5 are kill settings". Before mom could ask more questions, dad handed her a gun and nodded as we all darted down the hall, following Mac's map until we reached the main door of the facility. When mac opened the door, machine guns pierced his titanium armor but the skin underneath quickly regenerated as he destroyed the machine guns.
When we reached the gates I told Mac to summon the car and as the car landed in front of us, we all hopped in, but grandma decided to take her car and she said to us "well take two different routes there, see you guys soon" and our cars lifted off and zoomed away fast. As we flew over cities, we could see fires and knew the situation wouldn't be good but I could tell there were torn between taking us home to Canada and risk the men in black suits finding us or take us to the safe house which is safe but would be in an area surrounded by augments and under Mr. Gearing control. After a few minutes of mumbling to each other, they radioed grandma and said "change of plans, were heading to point Beta" and grandma said, "acknowledged, see you there". After several hours of flying, the car arrived at the woods, drove through the tunnel before finally docking at the facility; it was now 5 A.m. and Ernie was fast asleep but I was still up.
Shortly after we arrived, grandma docked and they showed her to a spare bedroom hidden at the end of the narrow hall while mac took Ernie and placed him in bed before returning to his chamber under operations to recharge his power cells. Now that everyone was going to sleep, I decided to finally sleep after having warm milk and cookies, however, mom and dad stayed up late. When I woke up, I realized I had slept in extremely late and when I got up to check on mom and dad they were still knocked out so I headed into the kitchen to make me and Ernie lunch but grandma was in the kitchen already making it. When she saw me she said "you'll have to give mom and dad some alone time for a bit while they get rest, but don't worry grandma will take care of you and I smiled as my life began to feel normal for a few minutes. When I finished eating, I decided that since there was nothing more for me to do, I would call Jamie. I found it weird that despite my secrecy, my parents knew about my phone calls because I had found a pink phone in my nightstand drawer with my name on it, last night while I was searching for a sleeping cap.
I dialed Jamie's number and he picked up and said "hey Camilla" and I said "hey". He asked if I was okay and I told him I was, now that I had my parents back and he said that's good and I asked him was he OK, and had he seen the news and he said yes, but his flight was canceled due to the attacks and that he was safe in Canada and I said "good now about my feelings for you and he said "I know you were caught up in the moment" and I said "no...now that everything's semi- normal, I realized my feelings are true and that when this is over, I'm gonna make up for lost time" and Jamie said "all that matters is that you're safe and well get through this weird mess together and then well have all the time in the world with each other "and I said we will and I will make sure of it" and he said "good and don't worry about your friends, I told them you're all right" and I said thanks and he said "I'll call you later, I've got a lot of homework" and we both said "bye" and hung up. The rest of the day went like clockwork except mom and dad didn't leave their room so grandma delivered dinner and gave me and Ernie extra snacks and I got to enjoy a nice relaxing bath and got to paint my nails and not have to worry about the weight of the world on my shoulders. Later as I drifted off to sleep, I began to worry again, because I knew that in a matter of days, we'd be going back into the fire and my greatest enemy I would have to face yet again, would be fear.
