Chapter 30
One of the major changes to the United Nations over the last year is that all nations are now members of the United Nations and have voting rights equal to the other nations. Only the Security Council is made up of a select group of the most powerful nations.
It is because of this change that the World Peace Plan will have the meaning that it does. Once voted on, it will have the power of all nations behind it. It is expected to be passed by an almost unanimous vote. There is expected to be only one country that will not vote for passage, North Korea. Even the weight of China could not convince the North Korean government to change its mind.
The reading of the World Peace Plan is scheduled for 10 am with 4 hours of comments and the initial vote at 3 pm. Amy, Will, Bill, and Bob were picked up by the Secret Service at the campground in New Jersey at 8 am and driven to the United Nations. They are greeted by the President, First Lady, their son and the US Ambassador to the United Nations. They were directed to a meeting room where they would watch the proceedings with everyone, except the US Ambassador, who would be on the floor for the reading, comments, and vote.
At least that was the plan. Around 9:30 am, a congregation of Ambassadors come to the room and requested Amy and Will to come with them. They would have a place of honor behind the United Nations President for the proceedings. At 10 am, the meeting of all nations within the United Nations was called to order. Roll call was made and only one country was not present, North Korea.
At 10:30, the United Nations World Peace Plan was read. 45 minutes later an open session was started for comments.
Halfway around the world, another plan was also being read. The North Korean President begins to issue orders to launch his nation’s first fully operational nuclear missiles against the United Nations. The World Peace Plan will go up in smoke.
Even though the United States closely monitors the missile launch pads in North Korea, for this launch, a new site is being used. Nothing of the upcoming launch is being left to chance. These missiles will fly over the North Pole and fall onto New York City. They will not overfly any of the US missile defense systems. Only one of the missiles will be required to wipe the United Nations from the map and strike a blow against the Imperialist US. At precisely 1 pm, the order is given to launch the missiles.
In the UN, the reading of the World Peace Plan is completed. The US is first to comment on the plan and the US Ambassador praises the committee on its work to develop such a complete and comprehensive plan. It calls for all nations to agree to have the UN settle any disputes. It also calls for food and monetary assistance for the poorest nations and for the richest nations to take a leading role in providing technical aid to its neighbors to raise the standards of living for all of mankind.
Next Russia and China are given a chance to comment and then the other nations of the world are allowed to comment. By 1 pm, fully two-thirds of the world have expressed their support for the plan.
At 1:15, several security forces enter the main hall and head directly to their Ambassadors. Within seconds, it is learned that there are 3 missiles heading towards New York and they are believed to be nuclear. There is no time to evacuate and there is no place to hide. If the missiles land anywhere near the city, millions will die including everyone in the United Nations.
Within the viewing room, the Secret Service is rushing the President and his family to the basement area of the United Nations. Unknown to the other Ambassadors and staff at the United Nations, there are tunnels that lead from New York to New Jersey and elsewhere in New York. These tunnels are over a hundred feet below the surface. It is hoped that they will be able to get the President to safety before the missiles hit.
While the President and staff are making their way to the tunnels, Will makes his way to the door and outside. Thousands are looking up to the sky, looking for any signs of the incoming doom. Amy, Bob, and Bruce join Will.
In Will’s head, he hears, “Will, it is time. You have the skills to save mankind. I am with you.”
Will is standing on the plaza looking north when he sees the first contrail, then a second and finally the third. On the plaza are many of the Ambassadors, news crews, and staff from the United Nations. Almost all eyes are on the missiles. Will raises his hand and begins to pray. Two camera crews notice Will and begin to film him, one on a close-up and another in a wider view.
The wide view catches the scene the best. At first, the missiles seem to hang in space then slowly they go off course. Instead of falling, they begin to climb, higher and higher they climb until they reach the edge of space. Before long, they are no longer visible.
The US missile tracking systems catch the change in the missiles and no one can believe what they see. First one, then the other missiles change course and head to deep space. Since the missiles are triggered by altitude they will never explode and are doomed to fly off into space for eternity.
At first, there is total silence. It is the news crews that react first. The camera crews notify the reporters of what has happened and they turn to see Will has his hand stretched toward the missiles. It takes a couple of seconds for them to put two plus two together to realize that the Second Coming of Christ has diverted the missiles. As they do, the commentary begins. Several newscasters rush to Will’s side and begin to bombard him with questions. One newscaster, however, is different. A devout Catholic, this young woman, standing in front of Will, gets down on her knees and begins to pray. The plaza becomes very quiet and slowly others also fall to their knees. Soon the entire plaza is on their knees, head bowed. Even the cameramen are kneeling although they have their cameras scanning the plaza to show what is happening.
Around the world, images of the plaza are played out. No commentary, just thousands of people all kneeling with their heads down in prayer. Slowly people around the world begin to do the same. They turn towards the direction of New York City, get down on their knees, bow their heads and pray. In Russia and China, there is total silence and slowly the political parties begin to kneel as well. Some of the members pray while others simply remain silent in thanks, realizing that the world just stepped back from the brink of extinction.
The President and his party are miles away when word slowly reaches them. The missiles did not land on New York. Somehow, they changed direction and flew off into space. Immediately, the President orders the group back to New York. He knows that somehow, Will Smythe, the Second Coming of Christ has saved them from extinction.
Amy is the first to notice that Will has not moved in some time. She is watching him as his arm slowly drops to his side. His body has changed. There is a soft glow around him which also fades. A small smile comes to his lips and he shakes his head up and down and says in a low voice, “Thank You, God!”
Will slowly becomes aware of the people on the plaza. Thousands are kneeling before him. He prays with them and after a few minutes, he says to the crowd, “Today, we have witnessed the need for the World Peace Plan. No nation should ever be allowed to strike out against another. We must join together and help one another, regardless of the cost to ourselves. Let us continue the work that was started today. Please return to the hall and let us take that first step towards lasting peace on earth. Let us bring the people of the world an everlasting peace.”
Cheers go up from the crowd. It takes about an hour before the Ambassadors return to the hall. The first order of business after a roll call is to vote on the World Peace Plan. It passes with every nation voting in favor.
On the other side of the world, the President of North Korea, “Rocketman” to those in the US, cannot believe the reports he is receiving. Not one of his missiles fell on the United States. He was all ready to tell the world that North Korea was now a nuclear power and taking the stage as a leader. Now he was beginning to fear for his life. Soon missiles from other nations would likely fall on his country. With no missiles left to launch, he had failed. His generals had failed him, his scientists had failed him and his people had failed him. They would all pay for their failure.
The President of the United States arrives back at the United Nations just as the Ambassadors are returning to the hall. Instead of going to the viewing room, he enters the hall and finds Will and his followers surrounded by Ambassadors from many nations. He has to wait for almost 30 minutes before there was an opening and he is able to approach Will. At first, he puts out his hand to thank Will, but at the last minute, he kneels and kisses the hand of the Second Coming of Christ. With cameras catching everything for the news, the President kneels there and says a prayer of thanks. When he stands, he notices that there is silence in the hall. He turns and walks back to the viewing room without a word to anyone.
The son of the President is the last to leave and he turns to Will and says, “Thank you, sir, for saving my father and mother.” Will smiles and the President’s son walks away to be with his family.
Roll call begins.
