Chapter 8: Alone and Afraid
As they walked through the streets of Houston, all that could be seen was ruins of buildings, cars and dead Victoria said "Paula what happened? where's my mommy and daddy?".Paula sighed and said, "you're too young to understand, but I'm taking you to your mommy... your daddy is off in another country right now helping save other men and women but he'll be back soon". Paula knew it was a lie but she just didn't know how to tell the young child that her daddy was dead. After walking a bit farther, Paula stopped in front of Andrea and Jay's house which now looked run down, but it was still comforting to Victoria. Paula walked into the house and sat Victoria on the couch and said "stay here I'm going to go get mommy okay?" and Victoria said "okay" with a smile on her face.
Paula walked up the steps to her and Andrea's bedroom opened the door and sat down in a run-down chair next to Andrea. Paula sighed and said " Babe don't freak out but your daughter is downstairs" and she dropped her book and said "Victoria?" and Paula nodded and said, "I think she's from a different dimension or something...I told her you were her mommy so just please act the part, she's already afraid". Andrea smiled and said I'll do my best before opening the door and walking downstairs and pulling Victoria into a hug". Andrea smiled and said "what happened baby, where have you been?" and Victoria frowned and said" I started developing these weird powers 2 weeks ago after this boy hit me with his soccer ball and earlier at school he kissed me and then next thing I know I'm engulfed in this tornado of purple energy and when I woke up the city was destroyed and I got hurt but Aunt Paula saved me". Andrea smiled and said, "you got powers, sweetie, that's okay, we'll work something out but for right now let's get you something to eat".
Victoria smiled and said, "yay I love when you cook, mommy". Andrea walked into the kitchen with Paula and said "she's from another dimension obviously and her parents will come looking for her so we should just take care of her and keep up the act until they get here". Paula said "and what if they don't?" and Andrea smiled and said, "if she's like me then I know she'll be here and soon". Paula smiled and said, "you're right but are you sure you're gonna be okay around her after what happened last year?". Andrea smiled and said "I'm fine babe" before giving her a kiss and preparing to make Victoria a snack while planning a way to keep Victoria for herself. After cooking her some food, she watched her eat, while Paula quickly cleaned Victoria's room of the beer bottles Andrea had left when she had her depressive episodes about the loss of her child. After eating, Andrea went up to her room which was lit by candles, and read books and played house with her. Andrea was really hungry but had nothing to eat as she had given her last to Victoria and Paula wasn't able to hunt for food because she had to save Victoria.
Her stomach growled but she ignored it until Victoria said "mommy you sound hungry, here let's eat some pizza" and Andrea said "sure honey, before She waved her hand which caused a pizza to appear on the table and food to appear in the empty cabinets and cupboards. After seeing this, Paula ran up to Victoria's room and said "Andrea the kitchen just magically filled with food-" but she was cut off by the sight of Andrea crying. Victoria walked over and hugged Andrea and said "it's okay mommy, we have food to eat now, so eat with me" before she looked over at Paula and said "come eat pizza with us Aunt Paula". Paula walked into the room and sat crisscross at Victoria's little tea table as they ate the pizza together with smiles on their face until Victoria began to look worn out".
Seeing this, Andrea said "what's wrong baby?" and Victoria frowned and said" using all those powers today wore me out, mommy". Andrea smiled and said "how about I read you a bedtime story " and Victoria smiled and said, "yes mommy I love your bedtime stories". Andrea pulled a book off the shelf and read from the same book about the candy people until Victoria gently fell asleep in her bed before Andrea blew out the candles and went downstairs to read with Paula. Over the next few days, Andrea and Victoria spent time together and it almost felt like for a moment she had her real daughter back and that everything was going to be okay again but she knew that somewhere another Andrea was suffering over the loss of her baby at her expense and would soon come for her baby but she didn't care, she was determined to enjoy every minute she could.
