Chapter Chapter Three
I was in the middle of the woods, alone, the others seemed to have given up the chase, they would never catch up to me now, I was too quick for them.
“Serena come home now” Lucien linked to me, but I blocked it out.
That was when I smelt it, the stench of blood mixed with wolfsbane.
“NO!” I screamed as I got closer, shifting as I picked up their body, turning it over.
“R…Ru…RUN!” Oliver muttered before he let out a wavering breath.
I let out a howl as it flooded the air, I carried his body on my wolf’s back as I made my way through the trees.
“Keep breathing for me Oliver” I begged as I felt his heartbeat faintly.
“I’ve found Oliver! Liv I need the pack to…” I began through the link before a snap of branches distracted me.
“Little wolf! Little wolf!” A voice taunted in the darkness of the trees.
“Serena run!” I heard Craig shout as I spotted him being held by Sebastian and Yusif with evil smirks on their faces.
“Come play little wolf” Sebastian laughed.
“You want to play, let’s play” I growl as I put Oliver against a tree.
I snarled, baring my canines as I circled around them.
“No! Leave Serena!” Craig shouts but I shake my head at him, growling at the men holding him, the monsters that plagued my nightmares.
“Come on little wolf, come get your mate. Ben’s had so much fun playing with his mind, toying with him” Sebastian smirks.
I growl and go to pounce at them, but before I could go anywhere I heard the rumble of hunter motorbikes as they dart through the trees with a group of wolves, my pack.
Darts whizzed through the air towards Sebastian and the others.
“Craig!” I screamed
“I hope you’ve enjoyed your time with your mate! Say goodbye!” Yusif calls through the chaos as I look on in fear, darting between the bullets.
“CRAIG!” I scream as Yusif grabs him by the neck and twists, my heart seems to stop as I tumble to the ground, the link between us snapping.
Craig was dead.
“NO!” I howl painfully as Sebastian and Yusif disappear, Ben having teleported them away.
I dart to Craigs side as I cradle him in my arms.
“No, don’t do this, Craig, please! Wake up!” I scream out.
“Serena!” Liv shifts in front of me.
“Back off!” I growl, baring my teeth as I sob over his body. My heart aching with pain, my wolf whining at the loss of its mate, our love.
“Serena, we need to get back to the packhouse, it’s not safe out here” Liv kneels beside me as I sob.
“SERENA! Oh my! Cupcake…What…no…” Lucien bounds up to us as he looks down at Craig’s body and then to me sullenly as he grabs me into his arms, I hit at him, taking all my anger out on him and yet he just lets me, he lets me sob against him as I slowly run out of energy, the pain in my heart taking over my body as I fell limp against him.
“Lucien we need to get back, Oliver needs the pack doctors,” Liv says quietly.
“Christopher have your men take Oliver to the packhouse NOW! The rest of you I want on perimeter watch, no one gets into our borders without our knowledge!” Lucien orders.
“You are not my alpha” Alex snarls beside us suddenly as he watches me.
“Alex now is not the time” Liv snaps.
“If she is going to be our alpha she needs to be it, right now, through the pain! All alpha’s encounter loss, this is no different! Alpha Serena, use the pain, use it to strengthen you!” Alex growls towards me as I look up from Lucien’s hold.
“Put me down Lucien” I murmur as he looks at me concerned as I stand, looking down at the body of my mate before looking towards Alex.
I take a step towards him and punch him in the face with all my might, using my anger, just like he said.
“As your alpha shut it, fall in line and get the fuck back to the packhouse. Fall out of line once more and I’ll chain you like a dog,” I growl in anger.
“Yes alpha” He smirks cockily.
I bend down stroking my mates face, tears in my eyes.
“May the moon goddess take you in her arms. I love you Craig” I kiss his head and nod to Lucien as he picks him up carefully.
“Alpha…” Liv puts a hand on my arm gently.
“Ready the packhouse for a funeral. I need to be alone” I said as she nods solemnly before I shift, running as fast as I can, pain surging me on faster and faster as I barrel through the door of my flat, tumbling to my knees before screaming out in pain before grabbing the nearest things I could find throwing them across the room.
“Serena! Stop! Serena!” Vance bursts through the door with Carla in tow as he holds down my arms to stop me from hurting myself and trashing the flat any further.
“Serena, what happened?” Carla kneels beside me, her hand caressing my cheek.
“He’s dead…Craig…He’s dead” I sob as she gasps, looking to Vance in horror.
“I thought it was Oliver…I never thought…Oh goddess…” Vance holds me tighter.
“Serena! Oh, my baby, Lucien called and told me everything!” Mum rushed through as she picked me up from Vance’s hold and held me tight to her bosom as I sobbed.
“What do we do?” Carla murmurs to Vance.
“Just be there for her, it will take time, but she will push through. Losing your mate is no easy feat.” Vance says.
“How did you do it, Vance? It hurts so much” I cry.
“One day at a time Serena, one day at a time” He walks up to me as he kisses my forehead.
“We should get to the packhouse,” Mum says tucking me into her side.
“I will close up the shop, we’ll be right behind you. I need to tell Tony and Pauline what happened” Vance said.
“I want to run there, no cars” I murmur.
“Running will help, but you shouldn’t be alone right now,” Mum says.
“Can I…Can I ride you?” Carla says quietly.
“I won’t be slow Carla” I sighed, feeling empty inside.
“I can hold on tight” She smiled lightly.
“Ok,” I shrug.
“I will run behind you,” Mum says as I nod.
We make our way downstairs as Vance opens the door to the café I see Pauline and Tony looking to the door with curiosity and worry.
“Serena?” Pauline calls out but Vance holds up a finger to quieten her.
“We need to close and then I will update you,” Vance says. They go to walk towards me, but Mum shakes her head and leads Carla and me out the back.
“Carla make sure you hold on tight, don’t worry about hurting her, you don’t want to fall off,” Mum says as I shift at the edge of the woods.
She climbs on carefully as she grips me, but not tight enough, I could feel her worry about hurting me still.
“Tell her tighter, she’ll fall” I tell my mum as she still stood in human form.
“Tighter Carla,” She says as I feel Carla hesitate before taking a better grip as I yip to my mother as she shifts.
I begin slowly, letting Carla and me get used to the feeling before I begin sprinting through the trees, dodging tree roots, darting in and out as she screams, scared I was going to hit a tree, but the further we went, the more she began to trust me.
Soon enough we were at the packhouse as I saw the twins patrolling together, I could feel the pain they felt having lost their best friend as we approached.
“Daniel!” Carla called out, recognising her mate, I felt a sliver of jealousy as she and Liv had both found their mates recently and now I had lost mine.
Both David and Daniel bolted over as they nuzzled into me, whining in sorrow.
I lowered myself down and yipped at Carla as she seemed to understand that I wanted her off, she jumped down as the boys shifted alongside me.
“Serena…I’m so sorry” David took me in his arms.
“No I’m sorry, I couldn’t save him, I didn’t get to him in time” I cried as Daniel took me into his arms too.
“This is NOT your fault,” David says.
“If…” I began.
“NOT YOUR FAULT!” The twins shout at me.
“How dare you shout at the alpha” Alex growls storming up to us.
“Fuck off Alex” David snaps.
“Make me” Alex gets in his face.
“ALEX! Stand down” I order before they get into a fight.
“No” He growls and punches David straight in the face as Daniel pushes Carla behind him and my mother.
I leap into action as I shift charging into Alex as he goes flying into the field, shocking some of the pack as I growl menacingly.
“You defy me, again and again, Alex, you defy your Alpha!” I growl, standing tall in front of him as he begins to bear his neck in submission, but not before shaking his head and standing in defiance as he seems to have a change in mind.
David snaps his teeth angrily behind me as I give him a look for him to stay back as he obeys but looks as if it wouldn’t take much for him to take Alex out once and for all.
“You’re weak, you are without your mate now, what is stopping someone from taking you out! Come on alpha, show the pack who you are!” Alex growls.
“Don’t be stupid, enough of this nonsense!” My mother shouts at us.
“A female alpha will never be respected, not one so weak” Alex coaxes.
“You’re playing with fire Alex,” Liv says as she finds us circling each other, the whole pack seemed to be here now, watching, waiting.
“She couldn’t find her beta, her mate died, come on alpha show me who’s boss!” Alex shouts.
“You want a fight, fine” I growl out as he smirks shifting into his wolf as the pack hoots and hollas.
“Serena, what are you thinking? We are here to mourn Craig, enough of this nonsense!” Mum cries out angrily.
“I ordered a pack meet to deal with him tonight didn’t I…Time to teach him a lesson,” I say back before I leap towards Alex.
In a clash of teeth and claws, I jump at Alex, darting around and under him, nipping at his legs as he tries to pin me down, his claws digging into my skin as I howl.
He was a large wolf, if I did one wrong move he could take me out easily, even with my alpha power, he was one of my best fighters and he knew it. Grabbing him by the tail I throw him off me as he tumbles but rights himself in an instant.
He charges at me, leaping at me as I duck down, he flies over my head and I manage to pull him down to the ground, taking his scruff in my teeth as he struggles against me, shaking hard before biting into his shoulder as he whimpers as blood pours from the wound as I let go snarling at him, a chunk out of his shoulder which would leave a large scar.
He whimpers on the ground as he bares his neck in submission.
I lick his would, helping his wound heal as he nods in thanks before shifting, groaning at the pain.
“Anyone else?!” I shout eyeing the wolves around me as they begin to murmur.
“No alpha” Necks are shown in submission as I nod and dismiss them.
“Did you need to take a chunk from my shoulder?” Alex groans.
“Do not talk to your alpha like that!” Liv growls.
“Calm down Liv, it’s ok. You wanted a show of force, didn’t you? Plus the scar will make you look good for the ladies” I raise a brow as Alex looks at me cockily.
“The things I do for my alpha” He rolls his eyes.
“Excuse me…what?” Daniel frowns.
“You haven’t told anyone have you?” Alex smirks.
“Not the time Alex” I shake my head.
No one knew that Alex was actually one wolf in my pack I trusted with my life, he helped me train harder than any other, he pushed me beyond my limits, making me stronger whereas the others tiptoed around me. Alex pushed his limits in the pack, making him seem as if he was troublesome, hated, but that bought him brownie points in the rogues that were testy with me, he helped me gain respect with them in a way I wouldn’t have been able to.
“I don’t understand…Are you two buddies now?” Daniel asks.
“Later, we’ll talk later. Alex go see the pack doctor.” I order as he nods, holding his shoulder grimacing.
We walked towards the house as I noticed they were making the funeral pyre to burn Craig’s body, sending him to the heavens to the goddess as I began to feel guilty for having forgotten for just a few moments during battle that I had lost my mate.
Several cars began to pull up as I noticed Pauline’s coven exit their cars alongside a group of hunters as I frowned.
Why would the coven be here?
