Two hours and a half later, he returned to my room. His arms slipped around me from behind, his chin resting on my shoulder - a familiar gesture that now felt like a stranger's touch.

"My Luna," he whispered, his voice rough. "I only protected her to keep her calm, to control the *silver sickness. She has barely a moon's time left. Please, show mercy... for me?" I pulled away from his touch. "Fine. I'll show mercy."

And give you to her completely, my wolf howled silently.

"Thorne - my steady, controlled Alpha - practically bounded from the room like an eager pup, rushing

to share the news with Silvana. But before the moon could rise again in the night sky, he returned,

his tail metaphorically tucked between his legs.

"My Luna... could we temporarily break our mate-bond?" His words fell like ice between us. "The healers say she's failing fast. I... I want to grant her final wish."

"Her final wish is to break our mate-bond?" The words tasted like ash in my mouth.

Thorne's silence was answer enough. "It's temporary," he added quickly. "Once she joins the Moon Goddess, we'll renew our bond."

I looked at the wolf I'd loved for ten winters, seeing a stranger in his fur. "And our territory? The four

dens, the hunting grounds, our pack savings?"

"Keep it all," he said, waving his hand dismissively. "I'll leave the pack lands with nothing."

A broken laugh escaped my throat. "Very well."

Thorne clutched his chest suddenly, as if our fraying bond physically pained him. "We should go to

the Pack Council now," he said, barely containing his eagerness. "I... won't have time later."

Too busy comforting a dying wolf, I thought bitterly.

But it didn't matter anymore. The mate-bond that once sang with power and promise now felt

tainted, corrupted - like drinking from a stream poisoned by silver. My wolf curled her lip in revulsion at his scent, once so precious to us. His touch, his presence, even the memory of our bond - all of it felt defiled.

Tainted.

the great Alpha who'd throw away his pup, betray his mate, and mock sacred pack laws for an outsider's dying wish - he wasn't worth the dirt beneath our paws. Let him run with his silver-sick beta. My wolf and I would rather face a thousand moons alone than share another moment with a

mate who'd fallen so far from pack honor.
