Zen's War: Captivity

Chapter 32: The Escape Artist

Sahara continued to try and come up with a plan of escape. Where would she go? She lay awake trying desperately to decide what to do. There were only a couple more days until The Day of Atonement. She figured that she would make her escape during that final day of awe. She had thoughts of what monsters she would come up against. Her obvious fear was of the Nocturnes. They spoke their own strange dialect that none but they could understand. They worshiped the moon and gave offerings of human flesh to their Moon God Luna. They had strange rituals where they would eat the heart of their sacrificial victims. Thinking about it gave her chills.

She had to push all of her fears aside, if she was going to survive her upcoming ordeal. Sahara then decided that she would inform Bridget of her plans. She felt that she could not keep these thoughts to herself.

“Bridget, are you awake?” she asked, but had no reply.

Sahara reached next to her and shook Bridget with her hand. Eventually she was roused from her sleep.

“I was, until I was so rudely awakened.”

“I’ve decided when I’m going to leave. I’m going to leave when the Day of Atonement begins.”

“Are you crazy? You want to leave at night. You know how dangerous it is out there.”

“Of course I do. I’m not an idiot. If we are leaving, we’re going to have to be willing to face our fears.”

“To the north there are mountains. Don’t you think your family is somewhere north of here? Isn’t that in the direction of where you were kidnapped? How do you expect to climb over those mountains?”

“We’ll have to go around them.”

“Go around them? That’s going to take forever,” Bridget responded. “You must be crazier than I thought.”

“I’m not crazy; I’m just determined to escape from this prison.”
