Chapter 410
Xavier held Arya's hand and walked along the roadside.
It was the direction of home.
He would never forget what happened in those months. No one could imagine what he had gone through. If the business world was the battle without killing, then the military battlefield was the real battle that would force one to watch lives pass away.
Arya looked at him sideways and reached out to touch his face. For the past few months, he had missed her all the time. When he saw her, he seemed to have not regained his senses. After a few seconds of silence, he said, "My silly girl, were you worried about me?"
Arya leaned against him and followed him at the same pace. "You're silly."
When she was in danger, the first thing he thought of was her.
Now she remembered what he looked like at that time.
"How did you persuade them to let you go?" Arya asked softly.
Xavier held Arya's hand even tighter as if it was a nightmare for him.
In the half-month after meeting the General, Xavier could only stay in the base and could not go anywhere. At most, he could only walk around casually.
One afternoon, the sky was gloomy as if it was going to rain heavily.
Xavier felt very stuffy. He walked out of the house and sat on the wooden box piled up on the lawn of the forest.
Over the past few days, he rarely spoke. If he was not in the house, he would sit quietly at the corner.
There were soldiers training not far away. Every day, groups of soldiers would train from morning to sunset. Though everyone trained very hard, he found that their weapons for war were not advanced, or even a little behind.
Therefore, this was also the reason why the General caught him. Without a large sum of money, they could not buy advanced weapons and equipment.
The General didn't do anything to Xavier during this period and waited patiently for his answer. Xavier knew that if he didn't agree, he couldn't leave here or even run away. That would bring danger to Arya and the child.
But if he agreed, he couldn't go back either.
Because Xavier knew that they were not like the enemies on the car. They were the terrorists fearless of death. Because of this, Xavier knew that he couldn't take the risk.
Just as Xavier was thinking, a small hand took an apple and handed it to him. He looked down and saw a little boy.
The boy's skin was dark and he was thin. His eyes were sunken but very bright. He opened his eyes wide and looked at the uncle who had been sitting here for a long time. The little body just handed him an apple and did not say anything.
Xavier was a little stunned. The body was wearing dirty clothes and his feet were covered in mud, but the apple in his hand was especially clean, which formed a sharp contrast.
"He wants to give you this apple.” Nata walked over and explained the little boy's actions in English. Xavier knew the little boy's actions. But he was moved by the boy's clear eyes. Ryan also had such bright eyes. They were simple and clear. But...
Xavier took the apple from the boy and thanked him.
The little boy still didn't say anything. He grinned and turned around, running not far away to give apples to soldiers who were training.
"They are all orphans in the surrounding villages. The boy just now is called Neo."
Nata took off the kettle from her waist and took a sip of water. She added, "He was a child of a peasant family in the surrounding village. Two months ago, after the war, he lost his parents and the ability to hear and talk.”
Not only he but also more children here lost their homes. Thinking of this, Nata gripped the kettle more tightly.
After giving the basket of fruit to soldiers, Neo came back and looked at Xavier with wide-opened eyes. He reached out to hold his hand and pointed at a place not far away, trying to say something but could not.
Nata stroked his head and explained to Xavier, "He invited you to visit their place. Follow him. You've been here for half a month. Just take a break and walk around.”
"Colonel Nata, the General told him not to leave here."
Before the guard soldier could finish his sentence, Nata raised her hand and stopped him, saying, "1 know the rule. He can't run away."
Even though Xavier could sneak out of here, he wouldn't do that because it would implicate his family.
After Nata finished speaking, the soldier could only agree. Nata looked at Xavier and said, "Mr. Jones, are you going?"
Xavier didn't want to go anywhere. However, seeing Neo's clear eyes, he couldn't refuse him and stood up to follow him into the jeep. They were driving to the village in front of him.
It was only when they drove into the village that he could really see what the place looked like. Half of the houses in the village had been destroyed. But people still lived inside. Some people would even put up simple shelters next to the collapsed houses.
The woman sat on the side of the road with the child in her arms and watched their jeep drive by. He only watched these scenes on TV. When he saw them clearly, he realized that they were much more desolate. The smell of gunpowder filled the air. Xavier frowned and had mixed feelings.
Nata turned the steering wheel and drove the car into the village church without saying anything. Then they stopped in the yard of the church.
She got out of the car and reached out to carry Neo and other children down. At this time, a group of children ran out of the church and saluted Nata in a very professional and firm manner. Nata also saluted them.
The priest came out of the church, stood behind the children, and said, "They are very happy to know that you are back, Colonel.”
Nata reached out to strike the children’s heads, then took out stacks of books from the back of the jeep and shouted at Xavier, "Mr. Jones, don't standstill. Help us."
Xavier stepped forward to take out the books and carried them into the church. The children followed him excitedly into the church.
The priest distributed the books to the children according to their preferences. They were all very happy. Holding the books, they flipped them through on the bench. They asked the priest if they could not understand the words.
Xavier and Nata sat down in the front row. Xavier looked up at Jesus on the cross in the middle. Nata prayed with both hands together and said with a smile, "In my opinion, praying won't help at all because I know very well that God can't help us except purifying the mind.”
"Mr. Jones, perhaps you think we are doing this for the sake of war, but sometimes we start the war helplessly.” She turned to look at the photos hanging on the wall and continued, "These photos show the original appearance of these villages. My brother and I grew up here. The hardworking people here have changed this place bit by bit."
Listening to Nata's words, Xavier looked at the photos. The village was very beautiful with many new houses and green fields on the roadside.
However, everything was just in the photos. What they had just seen was a broken and desolate place.
"The outside world thinks that we are terrorists and opponents. We didn't deny or admit.” No one was willing to embark on such a path, but they had no other choice.
Xavier looked down and did not comment on Nata's words.
But he knew that the only thing the warfighters cared about was a victory. But they did not know that in war, the people who suffered were always ordinary people.
Nata looked at Xavier's handsome face and seemed to have guessed what he was thinking. She said, "Our country is resourceful so we become the target of other countries. However, the weak country wants to sell this place to other countries. They drive people out of villages without compensating or accommodating them. Because of this, many people from other places come here. But we are experiencing the same thing."
They had nowhere to go but to resist.
She told Xavier about the stories that would never be reported on TV. In fact, the real terrorists were the people who robbed their hometown!
And they just wanted to protect their homes.
Thinking of it, Nata looked at the children who were reading and sighed. "They are all children who have lost their parents and homes. If we don't chase away those who came to rob our homes, we don't even have a place to live in. Mr. Jones, my brother also hopes that you can help us. I heard that you have a child and a wife too. You should be able to understand these children.”
