Chapter 140
When Mercer saw Harlan and Calla together in the distance, his face visibly darkened.
After a few seconds, he rolled up the car window and said to Simon in front, “Back to the company.”
“Yes, Mr. Garland.” Simon didn’t dare say more. Thus, he turned the wheel and drove off.
Hearing Calla’s self–deceptive words, Harlan frowned. He asked, “Is this what you want?”
Calla knew this was the perfect chance to make him give up completely.
Steeling herself, she smiled and said, “I live in a mansion. I ride in luxury cars and have ample pieces of jewelry. These are every woman’s ultimate goals. Now that I’m the CEO’s wife, what more could I possibly want?”
Hearing this, Harlan released her shoulders. His eyes filled with hurt. Then, he sneered, “So you’re such a shallow woman after all. I’m so sorry I ever thought you were different.”
“That’s why you shouldn’t think about me anymore. You deserve better.” Calla gave him a faint smile and then turned to leave.
She didn’t look back, not wanting to give Harlan any more hope. She walked away with her head held high, looking straight ahead.
Deep down, she felt a twinge of sadness.
The heart could be a cruel thing. We often loved those who were indifferent to us. Meanwhile, those who cared deeply for us failed to capture our affection.
She sincerely hoped Harlan would find his happiness.
She vaguely felt that Zoey seemed to have taken a liking to Harlan. Zoey could have easily given Harlan her phone number, but she didn’t. It seemed that Zoey had developed feelings for him.
Harlan was someone worth entrusting one’s life to. However, the age difference between him a Zoey was too great, and Harlan had once been infatuated with Calla. All things considered, they weren’t a good match.
Calla’s wait for Mercer continued throughout the week, leaving her perplexed. Why didn’t he seem eager to finalize the divorce? Was he perhaps waiting for her to regain her full strength before proceeding?
That day, Calla couldn’t refuse Alicia’s invitation. She ended up being dragged to the department store.
“You should go out more. Let’s go shopping to buy some nice clothes and bags, then you’ll feel better. They say retail therapy works wonders, you know?” Alicia pulled Calla along, chatting away to cheer
her up.
“Alright, I’ll buy a few bags today and see if I feel better.” Calla smiled.
She hadn’t used the credit card Mercer gave her in a long time. After all, it was better to use it while she still could. Once she was no longer his wife, she no longer had the right to use it.

Honestly, she had a small ulterior motive. The card was linked to Mercer’s phone number. Every time she made a purchase, a notification would be sent to his phone. Maybe this way, she could remind him of her existence–that he still had a wife he hadn’t seen in many days.
Passing by the jewelry section, Alicia pointed to a ‘diamond necklace in the display case. “This necklace is beautiful, but it’s too expensive–100,000 dollars. I’ll buy it when I become a wealthy lady.”
Hearing this, Calla smiled. Then, glancing up casually, she suddenly saw two familiar figures at the nearby diamond ring counter. She froze in place.
“What are you looking at?” Alicia followed Calla’s gaze and soon caught sight of the two figures. She paused and then, in a moment of anger, cursed, “What bad luck! We come out shopping only to run into those scum.”
Unable to help herself, Calla took one step after another toward the pair. Her beautiful eyes filled with deep sorrow.
