Seeing a fight break out, the doctor immediately intervened. “What are you doing? This is a hospital, you can’t fight here. If you want to fight, take it outside!”
The doctor’s words had an instant effect. Mercer and Harlan immediately stopped grappling.
“Doctor, how is my wife?” Mercer grabbed the doctor’s arm.
Confused, the female doctor looked at Mercer and asked, “What’s your wife’s name?”
“Calla Sherman,” Mercer answered.
The doctor glanced at Harlan, noticing the bruises on his face. “Didn’t you say you were Calla’s husband?” the doctor asked. “How come there’s another husband now? What’s going on here?”
“I’m Calla’s husband!” Mercer’s gaze turned menacing as he glared at Harlan.
“He was the one who signed the consent form just now,” the doctor said, taking out the document.
Mercer looked at it and sure enough, it had Harlan’s name on the bottom of the page. Enraged, he grabbed Harlan’s collar and demanded, “What do you want? Why are you pretending to be someone else’s husband?”
Harlan raised his voice as he retorted, “We couldn’t reach you earlier, and the doctor was waiting for a signature. Should we have waited until you came back to sign the form? Can childbirth wait?”
“Enough, stop arguing. The patient is in critical condition. I came out to ask Ms. Sherman’s husband whether to save the mother or the child if it comes to that,” the female doctor said loudly.
Mercer and Harlan were stunned by her words. They hadn’t expected the situation to be this serious,
The next moment, Mercer and Harlan said in unison, Save the mother!”
“Since both of you agree, we’ll do that.” The doctor glanced at them and turned to head back into the delivery room.
At this point, Sophie and Rose exchanged a look.
Rose then walked up to Harlan and said in a very stiff tone, “Look here, sir. Whatever relationship you had with Calla in the past, she is now my son’s wife and part of the Garland family. Please leave now!”
“I…” Harlan was at a loss for words in the face of such confrontation.
“Exactly. You seem to be a refined person, but here you are, competing for attention with Calla’s
husband in public. Isn’t that shameful?” Sophie stepped forward, mocking Harlan.
Knowing he couldn’t stay any longer, Harlan was left with no choice but to leave. But before leaving, he warned Mercer, “If anything happens to Calla, I won’t let you off scot–free!”
With that, he turned and left.
After Harlan was gone, Sophie approached Mercer. She asked with feigned concern, “Mercer, who was that man? What’s his relationship with Calla?”

“How is that any of your business?” Mercer responded coldly.
Sophie looked hurt, and Rose came to her defense. “Sophie was trying to be nice. No need to be so angry!”
Mercer’s gaze
fell on Jasmine, who immediately lowered her head, afraid to meet his eyes.
The next moment, Mercer stepped forward and asked, “Jasmine, how did Harlan get here?”
“Well…” Jasmine stammered, unable to answer.
“Speak up!” Mercer roared impatiently.
“Mercer is asking you a question, tell the truth!” Rose glared at Jasmine.
Looking up and meeting Rose’s eyes, Jasmine quickly said, “I–It was Mrs. Garland who gave me the number and told me to notify Harlan. I don’t have a phone with me, so I asked a nurse to help make the call.”
