Chapter 124
“It’s freezing in the mountains at night. How is your body going to take it if you sleep in the car? And what about Mr. Beck?” Jasmine asked with a frown.
“It’s the weekend. I gave him the day off,” Mercer replied.
“What?” Jasmine exclaimed in surprise. “Did you drive up the mountain by yourself?”
“Go get some rest. I’ll head back to Riverford first thing in the morning,” Mercer said before walking out of the villa.
Jasmine muttered to herself, “He’s always so tough on others, but he can’t help but worry, can he?” She then went back to her room to sleep.
At that moment, Calla almost dropped her cup.
Why had he come so late at night? Was it just to ask Jasmine about her condition? But that could have been done over a phone call. Why travel hundreds of miles back and forth?
And why did he choose to sleep in the car instead of the warm villa? She suddenly remembered saying that she wouldn’t be able to sleep if he stayed there. Had he taken her words seriously?
Jasmine’s comment puzzled Calla even more.
Did he care about her? But what about Sophie? Didn’t he love Sophie? Why was he going to such lengths for her?
Calla stood there for a long time, her mind à jumble of thoughts and emotions. She felt a mix of confusion, sadness, and uncertainty. It wasn’t until her body started to feel cold that she remembered to go back to her bedroom, completely forgetting about her thirst.
She tossed and turned for half the night, unable to sleep. Eventually, she concluded: Mercer must care about the baby she was carrying. After all, it was his first child. Even a tiger wouldn’t eat its cubs. He must want her to safely deliver the baby.
With that thought, Calla’s heart sank again.
The next morning, Calla overheard Jasmine taking breakfast out of the villa. She knew it must be for Mercer. When Jasmine returned with the empty food container, Calla knew he had already left.
Only then did she go downstairs for breakfast.
“Mrs. Garland? You’re up early today.” Jasmine was surprised to see Calla come down earlier than usual.
“Yeah, I kept waking up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. I couldn’t sleep well,” Calla responded.
“That’s common in the later months of pregnancy. You have just over half a month left before giving birth, so be very careful. Mr. Garland mentioned yesterday that he’ll take you to the hospital in Riverford two weeks early to prepare for the delivery!” Jasmine informed her with a smile.
“You met him?” Calla asked casually.
“Oh… No, how could I have met Mr. Garland when he was in Riverford? He called yesterday to ask about

your condition,” Jasminè stammered, trying to cover up.
Calla’s lips twitched, but she didn’t expose Jasmine’s lie.
At that moment, the intercom at the front door suddenly buzzed. The intercom was connected to the security guard at the main gate, who would use it to communicate anything happening outside to those inside.
As Jasmine answered the intercom, the guard’s voice came through. “Jasmine, there’s a Ms. Jonas here who says Mr. Garland sent her to check on Mrs. Garland.”
Calla paused upon hearing that.
Who else could “Ms. Jonas” be but Sophie? Mercer had just left, so how could she be here already?
Did Mercer send her? It didn’t seem likely, but if Mercer hadn’t told her where Calla was staying, she wouldn’t have been able to find the place.
“Mrs. Garland, do you want to see her?” Jasmine asked. Being a long–time employee at Garland Mansion, she knew Sophie well.
Jasmine had taken care of Calla for so long that, even though no one had explicitly explained, she understood the complexities of the situation.
“Do I have a choice when Mercer’s the one who told her to come?” Calla asked in return.
