Whispers Turn to Whimpers: Could He Ever Change?

Chapter 673

At the hospital, Sylvia was lying on the examination room bed when she learned that her grandmother had forgotten to take her medication.

Cara had brought it to her, and Sylvia had asked her to leave it there, promising to take it immediately. Unfortunately, she forgot.

"Grandma!" Gilbert couldn't control his fiery temper upon hearing this. "What's going on with you?"

"Oh dear."

Sylvia, startled, clutched her chest and glared at her grandson. "You scared the life out of me! Do you think I did it on purpose? With that temper of yours, no wonder Sherilyn isn't interested in you!" With that retort, Sylvia hit the nail on the head.

Stung by her words, Gilbert replied gruffly, "Are you and Sherilyn even comparable? Who would lose their temper at someone they like? Right?" "Huh?"

Sylvia paused for a moment, then laughed. "Look at you, all grown up and acting tough! Always knowing how to rile me up!" "You started it!"

The bickering between the grandmother and grandson seemed to brighten Sylvia's spirits more than anything else had.

Francis watched silently, thinking to himself how much they needed this brother's energy.

He was naturally reserved, and after their parents passed away, it was Gilbert's presence that kept their home feeling like a home.

Sylvia had two more tests to undergo.

She was wheeled into one examination room, while Francis waited outside. Gilbert, holding the paperwork, went to another room to schedule the appointment. Before leaving, he made sure to grab Sherilyn's hand. "Big bro's got this covered. Come queue with me."

Sherilyn was dragged along by him all the way to the examination room.

"Let go," Sherilyn finally said, trying to pull her arm free.

"What's the matter?" Gilbert looked down at her. "Planning on running away again?"

Sherilyn was speechless. "Aren't you supposed to go in and hand over the paperwork? Planning to walk in hand in hand?"

Gilbert smirked shamelessly. "And what's wrong with that? Afraid they'll be jealous?"

"Gilbert!" Sherilyn frowned, protesting with a furrowed brow. "I don't have the thick skin you do!"

Still, Gilbert wouldn't let go. "What if you run away the moment I let go?"

"I won't run," Sherilyn sighed, resigned. "If I were to run, I'd wait until Grandma's test results come back."

That seemed plausible enough.

Gilbert knew that in this family, the only person Sherilyn really cared about was their grandmother.

He hesitated for a moment, then let go. "Alright, I'm going in. You wait here for me."

After a pause, he added, "Once Grandma's results are in, I'll take you home. We can talk about us on the way."

"Sherilyn?"

Gilbert looked around, a sinking feeling in his heart. Sherilyn had lied to him... she had left!

He took out his phone to call her.

The call went through, but she didn't answer.

"Sherilyn..." Gilbert frowned, rubbing his temples. "Please, pick up."

"Gilbert?"

Caroline appeared out of nowhere, glancing around. "Where's Sherilyn? Weren't you two together?"

But she quickly sensed the situation, a smirk playing on her lips. "Did she leave? You didn't stop her?"

Clutching his phone, Gilbert's eyes darkened. "I just went in to hand over the paperwork."

"Oh." Caroline nodded as if suddenly understanding. "She left just like that, huh."

With a laugh, she added, "Well, if she's gone, she's gone. Grandma's getting her tests done, and Sherilyn staying wouldn't have made much difference anyway."
