Chapter 23
When Melanie finished speaking, Giselle felt as though a wave of shock had washed over her. She never thought the story would sound so different from Melanie's perspective.
Although she was shocked, Giselle did not think that what Melanie said was completely true.
After all, when it came to love and relationships, only those involved knew exactly what was happening in their relationship.
If Anthony really liked her, Giselle could not possibly be completely unaware of it.
Therefore, even after listening to Melanie's heartfelt words and explanation, Giselle thought pensively for a while before giving a response.
"Whether Anthony's feelings toward you are in the form of love, kinship, or friendship, I think they are much deeper than how he feels about me, who's his ex-wife now.
"I didn't decide to divorce him just because of your existence. There were also numerous incidents happening before that slowly accumulated over time.
"Eventually, I learned the harsh realities of married life and no longer held any expectations."
Melanie could somewhat resonate with Giselle as she listened to her speak of what happened calmly.
The words of advice she had for Giselle did not pass her lips.
The two of them met each other's gaze. Giselle sighed softly as she looked at Melanie's red eyes.
"Anyhow, this was an issue between me and Anthony. You were innocent, and you shouldn't have been dragged into this in the first place.
"He and I are now officially separated. Even I, the person directly involved, have gotten over it. So, why are you, a mere observer, feeling so stressed and sorry about it?
"Just let go of everything and live the life that you want. It's still not too late for you and me to start over."
Even after their conversation had ended, Melanie could still feel all kinds of emotions swirling inside her.
She remained in her seat all by herself for quite some time. Slowly, she began to understand what Giselle was trying to convey through her words earlier.
Whatever happened in the past should remain in the past. One should cherish the present and make the best out of it.
At that very moment, Melanie felt as if the dark clouds hovering over her head had dissipated and vanished.
She got up, walked to the next room, and opened the door.
It was quiet inside the room. Melanie called out softly to Anthony, who sat silently on a chair.
"Tony, are you alright?"
Anthony had heard the entire conversation between Melanie and Giselle just now.
He was far from being fine. Still, Anthony suppressed all of his emotions and tried to appear calm before Melanie. "I'm fine."
Melanie noticed almost instantly how Anthony's voice was shaking a little.
She lowered her head and sat opposite him. She thought for a moment before coming up with a few words of consolation.
"I can understand Giselle's feelings.
I'm not sure what happened between you two during the past three years. However, those incidents probably made her feel
really unhappy.
"That's why she wants to end things and start over. Tony, you should probably not dwell on the past anymore since Giselle has moved on." Anthony could understand what Melanie was trying to say.
Yet, he was also aware that he was
.n
the cause of Giselle's pain and despair in their marriage. How could Anthony possibly think about moving on when he was responsible for how things had turned out for them today?
It was pointless no matter how others tried to advise or console him.
Anthony did not want to make Melanie worry more for him. He changed the topic and offered to take her home.
Before they parted, Melanie asked him, "Tony, will you ever be able to give up on Giselle?"
"Can I? I don't think so," Anthony thought.
A sad smile hung on his face, yet there was a steeliness to his voice.
"She spent ten years trying to pursue me. Even though I married her, I never considered Giselle's feelings properly or tried to treat her well. Therefore, losing her was a punishment I deserved.
"After being married for three years, she's already become an irreplaceable part of my life. I can't just give up on her even if I wanted to. "Whether she hates or resents me now, I still want to try and get her back. No matter what happens, I'll follow what my heart tells me to do now."
Melanie did not try to advise against that. She lifted her hand and waved at Anthony. Her mouth turned up in a sincere smile. "Tony, thank you for looking out for me for all these years. I hope you'll be able to achieve what you wish for eventually."
