Chapter 8 The Eligible Bachelor vs. The Ordinary Girl
It was raining cats and dogs outside. Still, Liam kept the door open even though the rain was spattering on his seat.
"What a stubborn man he is!" Amber lamented before easing herself into his car.
"You're staying at X Apartment in Swindon, aren't you?" Liam floored the accelerator and sped away.
"How impressive your memory is!" Amber answered with a note of sarcasm in her voice.
Given that he knew her exact address, he must have done a thorough investigation on her.
Liam chuckled, "I'm flattered."
To break the awkward silence, he switched on the car stereo. A soothing piano piece that sounded slightly melancholic was played.
Amber, who relished in the beautiful music, felt a mixture of emotions swelling inside her.
She looked at Liam and asked, "What's the title of this piano piece?"
"It's 'Norturne' by Chopin."
Right after he said that the traffic ahead started slowing down.
Just like that, they were stuck in a traffic jam for twenty minutes.
Amber checked the time on her phone. When she saw it was almost six in the evening, she started getting anxious.
Looking at the torrential rain outside, Amber was worried about Pearl because the school bus she took did not send her straight back home. She wondered whether Pearl had an umbrella with her and whether she could make it back home on her own.
Liam glanced at her and asked, "Is there a problem?"
Amber looked out of the window at the heavy downpour and nodded at him. "My younger sister is heading home from school, but I'm not sure whether she has an umbrella or not."
Just then, the cars in front of them finally started moving. Seeing that, a wave of relief washed over Amber because it meant she could get home sooner.
Bang! Amber was fastening her seatbelt when the car jerked forward all of a sudden. Her head rammed hard into the dashboard in front of her due to the momentum.
A car behind them just crashed into the back of Liam's car.
Amber quickly glanced sideways at Liam. To her horror, she found blood on his forehead.
His head hit the pointed part of a black figurine fixed on the steering wheel when the collision happened.
"You're bleeding! You should wipe them off with some tissues. What's wrong with the driver behind us? Did she even pass her driving test?"
Despite feeling dizzy, Amber quickly handed Liam some tissues because she couldn't stand the sight of too much blood.
For some reason, blood started gushing out even more rapidly after he dabbed the wound with tissues.
A drop of blood trickled down from his face and landed on his crisp white shirt.
Feeling nauseous, Amber quickly moved her eyes away. She hastily took out her handkerchief from her handbag and offered Liam. "Use this on your forehead. The tissues don't seem to work." Liam hesitated for several seconds before taking it.
The blue handkerchief looked worn out as its color had faded. There was a picture a little girl holding an umbrella together with a cat-sewn on the bottom right corner of the handkerchief. At one glance one could tell the handkerchief belonged to a girl.
Just then, the driver of the car behind them approached them. The driver was a gorgeous lady who looked fashionable and sophisticated. She dressed rather scarcely with most of her legs exposed despite the frigid weather. Holding an umbrella, she stood next to where Liam was sitting and looked inside with a pleasant smile.
Liam opened the window.
Deep down inside, Amber secretly looked forward to the clash between Liam and the beautiful lady. She wondered how Liam would be like when he was red in the face.
Liam glanced at the lady's long legs before moving on to her face; his eyes did not linger on her chest at all.
Amber, who had been observing him, was amazed because he was not tempted to admire the woman's voluptuous figure.
"Does Liam prefer men?" Amber wondered. She racked her brain trying to search for clues. "He didn't seem to love his ex-girlfriend much, judging from how coldly he used to treat her. Everyone's been telling me how beautiful Mia Cavendish is. How can a man possibly resist someone like her?" she wondered.
"Now, he doesn't seem very interested in this busty lady too."
"Is that even normal? I don't think so!" She bit her nails as she went lost in thoughts. Suddenly, realization dawned upon Amber that the situation was favorable to her. Her safety would be ensured if she was going to have a marriage of convenience with a gay.
The smile on the gorgeous lady broadened when she saw Liam. "Why don't you come out and take a look at your car? I'm willing to compensate for the damage."
Liam did not even spare her a glance. Instead, he glued his eyes on the road ahead and responded flatly, "It isn't necessary. I can fix it myself."
With that, he was ready to close the window.
Disbelief was written all over the gorgeous lady's face when she heard him. She tapped the window and asked, "What do you mean? Are you sure you don't want my money?"
"Yes," Liam replied succinctly. Then, he threw her a flinty look-a signal for her to take her hands off the window.
Looking overjoyed, the gorgeous lady immediately retrieved her hand. She waved him goodbye before returning to her car.
Amber was taken aback by Liam's decision, considering that the damage to his car could be rather serious. Not only did he not bother to check his car, but he also did not demand compensation from the lady. Based on the gorgeous lady's reaction, Amber could tell that Liam's car was an expensive one.
"It's lucky of her to have avoided a hefty bill! Alas, it's one of the perks of being a beautiful lady!"
"My assumption on Liam's sexual orientation seemed to be wrong. I suppose he's just the type of man who doesn't like to show his feelings."
The traffic eased up considerably after that. As Liam drove fast, it did not take them too long to arrive at their destination.
Liam could not drive her to her apartment because his car was too huge for the narrow paths in the slummy and dilapidated residential area. After making sure that the school bus Pearl took had yet to arrive, Amber was ready to go. She placed her handbag on top of her head and said, "Mr. Croft, thanks for the ride. Please drive safely on your way back."
"I have an umbrella kept in the trunk of my car. You may take it with you." Liam took some time to size up the place where she stayed. The apartment was made up of two derelict four-story buildings. They looked shabby and dingy as the paint on the walls had started to crackle and peel off.
"Thanks, but I don't really need it. It's just a short run from here to the lobby." Not wanting to owe Liam any more favors, Amber held her handbag on top of her head and got out of his car.
She did not make it too far when a man jogged over with an umbrella in his hand. "Amber, is that you? Why aren't you holding an umbrella?"
Amber stiffened when she heard the man's voice.
It was Oliver. He ran over to Amber and held a black umbrella over her head.☐☐☐☐☐☐
