Chapter 20
Demon POV
We’re 20 miles from the vampire’s coven, the sun is setting, and Knox decides to call it a night and have us pull into a cheap, rusty motel.
We throw the targets out the car and then pile out the van.
“Alright James you and Zack will watch them for the night. I’ll come get you when we head out in the morning.”
They both nodded at Knox’s order before grabbing them and locking themselves into one of the rooms on the second floor.
“As for the rest of you, all of your rooms are on the second floor. Grab a roomie and get some sleep but stay on high alert. We don’t know if the vampires are trustworthy or how good those hunters really are.”
I nodded and looked at Onyx when Knox asked her if she wanted her own room.
She looks at me with slightly wide eyes and steps closer to me. Her breathing starts to come out slightly panicky and hurried.
She grabs hold of the bottom of my shirt and copies my breathing automatically. Our eyes stay locked on each other as I hold out my hand to Knox.
He drops the card in my hand and I gently nudge her to take the key card.
When she does, she bites her lip and looks in-between the motel and me before grabbing my hand softly and walking to the room.
I hear Knox sigh before Rose opens the door and walks in.
I wonder how cheap Knox went this time.
The room is covered with holes in hideous orange wallpaper and the carpet is coming off the floor. The queen size bed in the middle of the room looks like it’ll fall apart at any minute. There are some roaches coming out the holes just to go into another one.
I go to turn on the heat when Rose shivered and find out the heater is broken.
Knox is a real cheap sake I swear.
I sighed, “the heat doesn’t work”
Rose nodded and gave a small smile before going to the bed. She moved the covers to see if there are any roaches in the bed, luckily there wasn’t. Sitting on the bed she takes off the shoes before taking my jacket off.
I silently take my shirt off and lay it on the bed beside her.
She froze and didn’t move until I sat down in the three-legged chair across the room.
She grabs the shirt and looks towards the bathroom then back at me.
I get the hint and slowly stand, “I’m going to see if we can get more blankets.”
She nods whispers a quick thank you
“Anything for you”
Rose blushed and I walked out the room a tiny bit lighter.
I walked to the front desk and the rude lady gave me two extra ones when I heard a childlike giggle come from behind her.
Not looking to see what it was I quickly took the blankets and left the room before it brought back memories of my sweet little angel.
Shadow sighs, “You can only hold off the memories for so long Ben.”
I shake my head and try to walk back to the room quickly but ended up bumping into James.
“Hey Dem, you good?”
I didn’t say anything too distracted by Shadow.
“Our little angel is with the Luna playing and giggling and being a little princess with her.”
“yeah well Sophie shouldn’t be with the damn Goddess, she should be here with us.”
James puts his hand on my shoulder, “Here man I think you need this more than I do.”
He gives me a bottle of Hennessy before walking away.
Sighing I open it and take a long swig before closing it and going back to the room.
My hand touches the knob but sniffles and tiny sobs reach my ears before I can turn it.
Placing my head on the door I sigh and listen to my best friend cry her heart out for a child that was taken from her.
A innocent baby that she didn’t get to meet.
Her tears soon mix with her wolf’s broken howls and soon my tears joins theirs silently.
A bell tower a few miles away chimes twelve times, declaring it Sophia’s two-year death anniversary.
The moon is high in the sky when I open the bottle again and drink almost half the bottle in twenty minutes.
My pain and Roses tears pull me to finish the rest of the bottle before the tower can scream that another hour passed.
Rose cried herself to sleep just as I finished but I sat there for a little while longer to be sure that she was really asleep.
I get up on my feet shakily and quietly go into the room.
Rose’s soft breathing lures me to her
I stand above her like the damn creep I am and stare at her beautiful face.
She looks so innocent right now
She looks so tempting
Shadow agrees, “Extremely tempting and innocent. So much so that we must protect her. No matter what.”
I nod and can sense Shadow wanting to take over.
“What do you plan to do Shadow?”
I feel my canines slowly come out, “if we mark her then we can always be there for her. Physically and mentally.”
“No one would dare touch her. They know they would die before they could.”
“yeah but what about the demons in her mind? We can’t kill them unless she lets her in her mind.”
I sigh and smile while wiping her face of tears, “That’s exactly it Shadow we can’t kill them, but we could subdue or distract them for a while. She has to be the one to kill her demons otherwise they will continue to haunt her even in death.”
He whines before retracting the canines and sits in his corner, “You’re right. We’ll wait until she asks us to mark her.”
I nod at him before bringing the wobbly chair over to the bed.
I balance myself in it before closing my eyes for a little bit of rest
