The Sentinel of Cassendar: Resquarian

Chapter Epilogue

Over Four Years Later

Dracia stared at the High Captain with her sword at the ready. Watching the young woman, Dracia waited patiently for her to strike. The High Captain circled around Dracia never taking her eyes off of her as Dracia followed her movement. Without warning, and quicker than Dracia would have though possible, the High Captain struck out at her. Dracia blocked her thrust and pushed back, causing the High Captain to stumble back a few paces. She came at Dracia again in a series of moves that pushed Dracia to get blocks up in time.

After stopping the High Captain’s attack and then taking a step back, Dracia looked over to see Ethen watching them. Dracia gave him a small grin and then turned all her attention on the High Captain, staring at that woman and studying her. The High Captain was much too quick for Dracia to ever get the upper hand on her, but Dracia had a skill the High Captain could not account for. Dracia looked at the young woman, feeling her Siccarian Ability search through the High Captain. She gave the High Captain a very small smile before the High Captain struck over and over, Dracia able to guess where she was going each time.

Finally, Dracia was able to turn and strike out causing the High Captain to lose her footing and slip down. Dracia stood over her with her sword at her chest.

“I yield, my queen,” said the High Captain with a small grin as Dracia put her sword away.

“That was very good, Cara,” said Dracia as she offered the High Captain her hand. “I thought you almost had me when I slipped on the wet grass.”

“I might have if you weren’t able to guess which way I was going to strike,” answered the High Captain as she let Dracia help her up. “You never seem to guess wrong, your majesty.”

Dracia glanced at Ethen with a small smile. “I have had years of more practice than you, Captain, and perhaps a large amount of luck on my side. You should go on in and eat, Cara. I thank you for meeting me this morning.”

“I very much enjoyed it, your majesty. Will we meet this afternoon to discuss the issue with the Northwest Fortress?” asked Cara

“Yes, but I think I know what will need to happen. I will have to visit within the next few weeks. I will see if Galen will come with me.”

“I could come as well, your majesty,” said Cara. “Tomas and Lara are more than capable of taking care of the main Fortress.”

“I am sure they are, but I will want you to keep at least one of your second here in Siccaria as I am sure the king, prince, and princess will stay here for some time. You will be needed at the main Fortress. I can take a few Elites if you can spare them.”

“If you are traveling, cousin, you could take some of the Aurorial guards as well,” offered Ethen as he walked over to stand by Dracia. “Though I hope you don’t plan on leaving too soon. I know Maia wishes you to be with her as our child is born, though she will of course understand if that is not possible.”

“I will not leave before your child is born, Ethen. How could you think it? I already had to miss the birth of dear Nicolas.”

“I will be happy to send any number of Elites you wish, my queen,” said Cara. “I would not like you to go out into the kingdom under protected.”

“I am very capable of watching myself, Cara, but I will take the precaution of traveling with a few Elites and a couple of the Aurorial guard if you think they can be spared, Ethen.”

“I have no doubt, Lord Owin will be more than happy to oblige you, Dracia. He may offer to come with you, himself.”

Dracia smiled at Ethen and then turned to Cara. “Go on and eat, Cara. I will see you later this afternoon to finalize plans for my trip. I hope you will meet me early tomorrow morning as well?”

“Of course, your majesty. Perhaps one of these mornings, I might gain the upper hand on you,” said Cara before she bowed and left.

“I guess you haven’t told her about your ability?” asked Ethen as Dracia ran her fingers through her tangled hair.

“I have very little else to aid me when sparring, Cara, as it is Ethen. I am not as quick as I used to be. Let me have my one trick,” implored Dracia as Ethen laughed.

“I doubt I am the first, but let me wish you a happy birthday, cousin,” said Ethen.

“No, you are not the first,” grinned Dracia, thinking of her king waking her up in a very agreeable way. “But I thank you. I do feel my age after that sparring session, Ethen. I am becoming quite ancient.”

“Nonsense, Dracia, you are not old at all. If you are ancient what will that make me, your slightly older cousin?” asked Ethen with a laugh.

“You will always seem young. I feel I have put on many years lately.”

“Well, you can’t tell it, Dracia. You look very young and fresh to me. I believe Siccaria has done you much good.”

“I think it has, and I am happy to be here for the birth of your child. Perhaps he or she will be born today and share a birthday with me.”

“Maia seems to think it will be a little bit, but we will have to see. Are you going into breakfast?” asked Ethen.

“I should clean and change into something more appropriate, though I will probably check on the prince first.”

“Not the princess?” asked Ethen as he offered Dracia his arm.

“Oh, she has been up for ages at this point, and probably found her way into waking the king, or perhaps she is running after young Lord Nicolas and terrorizing poor Maia.”

Ethen laughed again as he walked into the palace with Dracia and to the nursery. Opening the door, they found the nursery attendant was sitting with Prince Bryn in her lap, feeding him breakfast. When the young prince saw his mother, he lost interest in his food and reached for Dracia happily shouting, “Mama.”

Dracia smiled as she moved forward, taking Bryn from the attendant’s lap, and holding him close to her body.

“How are you, my sweet boy?” cooed Dracia as she smoothed out his sandy blonde curls with her hand.

“He seems quite healthy,” remarked Ethen as he looked at the large child in Dracia’s arms. “I think he might be almost twice the size poor Nicolas was at that age.”

“But your son has caught up it seems. He will probably be taller than even you the way he is growing,” said Dracia as she kissed her son. “Now where is your sister?”

“She took off this morning, your majesty,” said another the attendant who was making one of the small beds. “I went to catch her, but she found the king in the halls, and he said he would see she had breakfast.”

“I am sure he did,” tutted Dracia. “He spoils her terribly, Ethen,”

“Fathers are supposed to spoil their daughters, Dracia. You can’t tell me Lord Arwel didn’t give you everything you ever wanted,” said Ethen. “I hope to have a daughter to spoil someday.”

“Perhaps this one will be a girl, Ethen,” said Dracia as she kissed her son one more time and hugged him close before handing him back to the attendant. “You won’t have much longer to wait.” She look down at her son who had gone back to enjoying his food. “I will be back to take a walk with the prince after breakfast. If you need anything before then, please come find me.”

Dracia walked to the door with Ethen and looked one more time at her son who was happily eating with his attendant. She loved both of her children dearly, but it was harder to be parted from Bryn. Perhaps it had to do with the birth and what she had lost.

Dracia walked out with Ethen into the hallway as they both turned hearing a loud noise coming their way.

“Gregory, do not run down the halls. Galen, you should not encourage him,” said Roderick as he ran after his small dark haired son whom Galen stalked behind.

“I was only helping you to catch him,” said Galen as he scooped up Gregory who laughed.

“Again, uncle,” said Gregory with a giggle.

“No, your papa is already cross,” said Galen. “You better listen to him.”

“I should go change for breakfast,” said Dracia as she walked up to Galen, dropping a quick kiss on Gregory’s head as the boy giggled again. “Galen, I need you to meet with Cara and me after lunch.”

“More troubles in the Northwest Fortress?” asked Galen. “I should have listened to you about that commander.”

“Well, we had much to arrange as we set up the new Fortresses in the kingdom. One was bound to be more trouble than the rest. The commander is young, and I am sure we can smooth everything out, but I need to go and see for myself. I am hoping you will come with me, but I understand if you cannot.”

“I will go with you, your majesty,” said Galen as he sat Gregory down.

“I can go as well,” said Roderick as he took his son’s hand.

“No, Selene will want to stay here for some weeks to see her sister is well, and you should be here with them. Besides, I am sure the king will need your company as he will be staying here for a few weeks still.”

“That is if he doesn’t go with you,” said Roderick with a grin. “I don’t think he will like you going without him. I am surprised he even lets you walk around here without being by your side.”

“He has gotten better of late of leaving me for short periods,” said Dracia. “He can’t shadow me at all times, and I think he is finally understanding it.”

“I hope you aren’t giving him a hard time,” said Roderick quietly. “You must understand why he acts as he does.”

Dracia nodded. “I do understand. It is the same reason it is hard for me to leave the prince in a very trusted attendants care.”

Roderick gave her a sad smile as Dracia felt someone tugging on her pants. She looked down to see Gregory smiling up at her, not liking that he was being ignored. She smiled down at the dark haired little boy and then back to Roderick.

“Go take care of your son. I need to change for breakfast,” said Dracia as she squeezed Roderick’s arm and walked on, feeling the eyes of all three men on her as she walked down the hall.

She knew all those who had cared about her had been worried about her. She knew how close she had come to losing her life during the birth of her twin boys. In the end she and sweet Bryn could be saved, but her precious Eli could not. She barely had a chance to see the sweet, perfect looking dark haired boy who was born asleep. She had gotten to hold him for a moment before everything went dark.

She awoke a day later to learn only Bryn had survived, and she was very ill and weak. It had taken her a long time to fully recover physical. She still wasn’t sure she had recovered mentally. She had a feeling the grief would always be a part of her.

As Dracia walked into her rooms she knew she should be thankful, and she was. She had her bright, independent, beautiful daughter, and her sweet sandy blonde son. She had a husband that loved her completely, and who still made her heart flutter when he even glanced at her. She was very happy, but sometimes she still felt an ache and sadness for the son she would never get to see grow.

There was also the fact, there would be no other children. Galen had been adamant that she should not attempt to bear any more children, and it might not even be possible with what she had suffered. She was disappointed, but Leal said he was very happy with their son and daughter, and she knew just how blessed she really was.

Her attendant, Lanie, already had a bath ready for Dracia so she cleaned and dressed quickly to get to the dinning room before breakfast was over. She stood in the doorway to see everyone gathered except for Lady Selene, but that was not unusual. Selene was not an early riser. Before entering, Dracia turned to Lanie who had walked with her and asked her to see that the princess got to the nursery. Lanie agreed with a small curtsey

“Mama,” said the princess happily, jumping out of her chair to greet her mother.

“Of course you are in here instead of in the nursery where you belong. Did you managed to charm your father into giving you what you want again?” asked Dracia as she bent down to hug her daughter.

The princess only giggled in response as the king stood up. “I can see her back to the nursery, Dracia. I just had her in here with me before everyone joined us.”

“It is fine, Leal,” reassured Dracia as she took her daughter’s hand. “Lanie is outside ready to take her now. You should go play with your cousin, and watch over your brother, Evie. I believe Gregory is there now as well, and he will be looking for you.”

“Yes, go my darling,” said Leal. “Those young boys will need you to tell them what to do this morning.”

“We will come see you all later this morning,” said Dracia as she took her daughters hand and led her to the attendant who waited by the door.

“You should sit, dearest, and I will get you some food,” said Leal as he pulled a chair out for Dracia.

She thought to argue and let him know she could see to her own food, but she saw the soft look in his eyes and stopped herself

“Maia, Are you feeling well today?” asked Dracia as she sat down.

“I am feeling very well, only a little large and clumsy, but I am sure you know the feeling.”

“Oh, very much so. When I was carrying my sons, I could barely get out of bed at the end,” said Dracia. She looked down for a moment and sighed, but composed herself quickly. “It is worth it in the end, as you well know.”

Maia nodded and reached over to squeeze Dracia’s hand. “We were just speaking of Prince Bryn and what a fine boy he is,” said Maia cheerfully. “I am sure he will make a good king someday.”

“Yes, well, I hope that is very far in the future for many reasons,” said Dracia as Leal put a plate of food in front of her. “First, I shall have to survive raising my headstrong daughter. Of course, once she reaches a certain age, I can send her here to learn from both of you, and you can deal with her, Maia.”

“There is no rush to send our precious daughter anywhere, Dracia. I am still not sure I should like her to come to Siccaria and rule,” said Leal.

“Oh, but you will,” said Lady Elise. “Because she is obviously meant to be a High Noble with her coloring and spirit.”

“Perhaps Bryn will rule sooner than I would like,” said Dracia as she poured some tea into her cup. “Our king might step down just so he can come and stay in Siccaria to keep watch over Evie.”

“Both of my children are precious to me,” said Leal as he smiled at Dracia. “I am sure I will be able to face Evie going to Siccaria someday. It is better than her marrying some foreign prince I barely know.”

“You don’t think our daughter will marry some day?” asked Dracia.

“She might if I can find a young man worthy of her,” said Leal.

“One that knows he will have to live in Siccaria,” said Lady Elise.

“She is not even five yet,” said Ethen as he winked at Dracia. “I think we can leave the matchmaking alone for a few years.”

“I have a feeling you do not need to worry about the princes your majesty,” said Galen as he smiled at the king. “It seems to me your daughter will know her worth very well. She certainly knows her own mind.”

“You think our king spoils the princess dreadfully, but no one is so indulgent with her as Galen,” said Roderick laughing.

Galen shook his head at his brother while Lexine laughed along with Roderick.

“Why do you deny it, my lord,” said Lexine as she put her hand over Galen’s. “You know he is right.”

“Roderick is not much better, taking her for rides whenever she wishes,” said Galen.

“She needs to learn to ride. My time with her is instructional,” said Roderick as he took a drink of tea.

“And the pony you’ve been looking for is part of that instruction?” asked Leal with a small grin.

“Of course,” answered Roderick. “She will soon be big enough to ride on her own, and she must have a proper, safe mount.”

Ethen laughed. “She has all of you wrapped around her little finger. I wonder if she will ever be able to find a husband one day if he has to meet with every one of yours’ approval.”

“As if you will not be twice as hard on any young man who would dare set eyes on her, Ethen,” laughed Maia.

“As I said, that is way in the future,” said Ethen.

They were all finishing breakfast when Selene finally made her appearance, walking into the room and picking up a sweet roll before kissing her husband on the cheek.

“Finally decided to get out of bed?” asked Maia.

“I have been up for a while, but I went to see Gregory of course. I got caught up in a game of soldiers. Your daughter had quite a campaign going, Dracia.”

“She is so much like her mother it is scary sometimes,” said Leal as he stood. “We should all get ready if we are going to go for that ride later this morning. Our queen did request it, and it is her birthday after all.”

“I would like to go see the dogwoods by the lake. I know they are not much in bloom anymore, but they are still lovely,” said Dracia. “Anyone who wishes to come may do so.”

“I will stay here with Maia,” said Selene as she sat by her sister. “I believe Lord Ethen has promised the princess she could ride out with him.”

“So, I have,” said Ethen.

“We have plenty of time,” said Dracia as she finished her tea and stood. “I planned to go for a walk with Bryn, but we can meet by the stables half past the tenth bell if that works for everyone.”

“I will walk with you, dearest, if you are agreeable,” said Leal as he too stood.

“Of course, I am always happy to have you by my side,” said Dracia as Leal offered her his arm.

Dracia and Leal walked down to the nursery to collect their son. Dracia asked the princess if she wished to go, but she was much too engrossed in playing with Nicolas and Gregory and said it was quite impossible for her to leave now. Leal bent down and kissed the top of her head as Dracia held Bryn. They walked to a nearby courtyard and opened the door, finding Lady Elise sitting under a tree on a bench.

“Good morning, grandmother,” said Dracia as she put her son down so he could walk around.

“Dear Dracia, your majesty, I see you have brought the young prince out so he could stretch his legs,” said Lady Elise as she smiled at the small boy.

“He is not as exuberant as his sister, but he does enjoy moving about as much as he can,” said Leal as he walked behind his son.

“He is a fine boy, and looks much like his father,” said Lady Elise as Dracia sat down beside her.

“He does,” said Dracia fondly, “though I believe he has my chin which is a pity as Leal’s is much stronger.”

“It does not hurt the young prince in looks and I doubt it will as he grows,” said Lady Elise as she turned to Dracia. “And how do you feel, my dear. You do look much healthier since you came here a few weeks ago.”

“I believe Siccaria has done me much good. I feel better than I have in over a year,” answered Dracia.

“I am glad to hear it,” said Lady Elise. “And I think your king is very happy to see you smile once again.”

“I have much to smile about,” said Dracia. “I am indeed more blessed than most.”

“You are,” agreed Lady Elise carefully. “But that does not mean you have not suffered. I believe you have suffered more than most as well, Dracia.”

“Most of my suffering has been worth it. I dare say almost all of it,” mused Dracia. “Both of my kingdoms are safe and are prospering. The land is more peaceful and connected than it has been in many years. I have abundant family that I know love and support me. I have two healthy children, and husband I am very in love with. What more could I ask for?”

“Indeed,” said Lady Elise as she took Dracia’s hand. “You are very blessed, my dear, and I am happy for it, but do not push away the grief you have a right to feel.”

Dracia nodded. “I do understand, but it is my birthday today, and I wish to be joyful and focus on what I do have,” said Dracia as she looked at Leal pick up his son, making the boy giggle.

Dracia walked back into the palace with Leal carrying Bryn.

“It is looking as if I will have to ride out to the Northwest Fortress in a couple of weeks,” said Dracia as they walked.

“Oh, is there that much trouble?” asked Leal.

“It would just be easier if I could see the situation for myself. I think I can set things right if I go. It should not take long, and Galen has agreed to go with me.”

“I should like to go as well,” said Leal.

“I do not think that would be wise,” said Dracia. “Our children are here in Siccaria and we will not have time to drop them off in Winsdell. You would do better to stay here with them.”

“Our children will be here in a place surrounded by family and friends who love them. You think Lady Elise and Lord Quain won’t dote upon them? You think Ethen and even Lord Owin won’t see to the princesses every whim? I am sure Roderick and Selene will be here for a while. They will both spend time with our children.”

“I just hate to leave them without their parents for any amount of time. It is hard enough leaving them myself, but knowing you are here would be a great comfort,” said Dracia as she looked at Bryn.

Leal stopped walking and turned to Dracia. “You and I have had barely fifteen minutes alone when we are awake. I should like to go with you to support you on this trip, but I would also like a few days with my wife. We could stop by Kellen’s estate on the way back. You know he has been dying for a visit from us. You could see your new nephew, and we could spend a couple of days riding over the large hills, and walking in the manor together.” Leal paused and moved closer to her. “We could find some dark corners perhaps.”

Dracia smiled slightly. “It does sound rather nice,” she said quietly

“Then do not argue further, and accept that I will accompany you. We will not be gone long. I doubt this little one will even remember, and Evie will hardly notice.”

Dracia nodded, and Leal smiled brightly.

They dropped their son off in the nursery and collected Evie and Nicolas. Gregory looked to have fallen asleep, so they let him nap.

“Will I still get to ride with Lord Ethen?” asked Evie as she held onto Dracia’s hand.

“He has told you he would take you, Evie. I believe he is a man of his word,” said Dracia with a smile.

“And Nicolas will go with us?” asked Evie.

“Of course,” said Leal as he held on to Nicolas hand. “He will ride with me. As the future ruler of his kingdom, it is only fitting that he should ride with a king.”

“I will rule with him,” said Evie with a small pout.

“You will, dearest,” said Dracia. “And I am sure Lord Ethen has much to teach you so you must listen to him.”

Evie nodded and let go of Dracia’s hand as they came into view of the stables. She grabbed Nicolas and together they ran towards the stables, Leal and Dracia increasing their pace to keep up with the children. They got to the stables to see Roderick standing by Magni and Aarit as Leal’s horse was still being saddled.

“Why don’t you go on ahead with Roderick, dearest,” said Leal as he stood by Evie and Nicolas who were looking up at Leal’s horse. “I will wait here for Ethen, and we will meet you by the lake.”

“You are sure, Leal?” asked Dracia.

“Yes, I am very sure. I know how you and Roderick like to ride out together, and I do not think either of you have had time lately. Go spend a few moments with your friend, and we will all see you soon.”

Dracia smiled and kissed Leal on the cheek. “You are very good to me,” said Dracia.

“I would do anything to see you smile like that, my love,” whispered Leal. “I have missed your smiles.”

“I am feeling much better lately, and I do think our trip together will do me much good. Perhaps Galen could bring Lexine as well,” said Dracia.

“I think my sister would like to go. She doesn’t seem to like to be away from Galen for long,” said Leal. “Now, go on and ride out with Roderick. You two can run your horses as fast as you like without worrying about the rest of us.”

Dracia happily mounted her horse as Roderick stood by her. Once he saw she was settled, he got on his own mount, and they took off towards the front of the palace. As they rode towards the trees, Dracia noticed Roderick looked at her often.

“What is it?” she asked. “Is my hair out of place or is there still a bit of breakfast on my face? There has to be a reason you keep staring.”

“I merely glad to be riding next to you. It has been too long since you and I have been on a ride. I don’t think you and I have really talked much at all in the last few months. I have missed you.”

“I have missed you as well. I apologize if it feels as if I have been ignoring you. I have not felt like myself.”

“I know,” sighed Roderick. “You do not need to apologize. I only wish I could have been a better friend to you.”

“You were there for me, Roderick. More importantly, you have been there for Leal. There was nothing better you could have done for me, than to care for the king. I have not been there for Leal as I should.”

“You should not feel guilty, Dracia. You nearly died yourself, and you were ill for quite some time. That with your grief was a terrible burden. I am sure the king is only happy to see you looking and feeling better.”

“I am feeling better, Roderick. A change of scenery has done me good. I love Winsdell and it will always be my home, but something about Siccaria refreshes me. Now, I am sure Aarit would like nothing more than to stretch his legs. Do try to keep up,” said Dracia with a smile before she sent Aarit forward, running through the trees towards the Lake.

She pulled Aarit to a walk as they approached the lake. Roderick rode up beside her and together they stopped and dismounted. They walked to the lake and looked out over it for some time, neither talking, just enjoying the slight breeze and each other’s company.

Dracia walked up to the lake and knelt down, feeling the cool water on the bank with her hand She stood after a moment and looked around, seeing the fading blooms on the dogwoods amongst the green leaves. It was so lovely in Siccaria in spring. She felt tears come to her eyes looking at it all, thinking that her dark haired son should have one day called this place home.

“Dracia,” whispered Roderick. “What is it?”

She shook her head and looked at him as they both heard the sound of others riding up. Roderick grabbed Dracia’s hand and brought her over to Ethen and Leal as they dismounted with the children. The princess took the hand of Roderick, and Nicolas and led them off somewhere close to the lake as Galen, Lexine, and Leal followed them while, Ethen walked slowly with Dracia as she quickly wiped her eyes with her fingers.

“Dracia, are you alright?” asked Ethen with concern.

“I am very well, Ethen,” said Dracia as she took his arm. “I suppose my birthday has made me a little weepy this morning. That, and perhaps I didn’t sleep as well last night.”

“You should know by now, you can’t hide much from me. It is alright that you still mourn your child at times, Dracia. It hasn’t even been two years,” said Ethen.

“Most of the time I am fine. I know I should be thankful for the son I do have, and even to be alive, but sometimes when I see all of our children running around, happy, I can’t help but think of my sweet boy who will never have the chance to run around this lake, or play with his sister or cousins. He never got to see Siccaria.”

Ethen pulled her closer. “I don’t know what to say, Dracia. I can’t imagine the pain you felt and still feel, you and Leal.”

“He looked much like Evie when she was born. I suppose he would have been a High Noble with her and your own children. I should have liked Evie to have a brother with her when she came to live here.”

“She shall have Nicolas and her other cousin that will be born very soon. She is very close to Nicolas already. I dare say they are as close and brother and sister. She will never be alone,” said Ethen.

“I know, Ethen. I am very happy, and I feel very fortunate. For all that my life was not too long ago, I can’t imagine how blessed I would be at this point. I have everything I ever wanted and more,” said Dracia as she smiled watching her husband help her daughter find a certain rock along the bank of the lake.

“We are both very blessed. I suppose I have always lived a fortunate life being born to the High Nobles with a father and grandmother who loved me. I met a wonderful woman who for some reason chose to marry me, and we have a healthy son, and hopefully another child very soon. I am surrounded by family now it seems with Selene, Roderick, and of course you, and Leal. My kingdom is secure at the moment, and all I love is safe.”

“Yes, things are good right now,” said Dracia. “And I will enjoy it while I can. There will always be hard times up ahead at some point, but I know I have the support around me to face anything, even with the unthinkable happens.”

They stopped and stood together watching their children play close to the water as Leal turned and looked at them. He walked up to them, taking his wife’s hand.

“You have not been crying, have you, my love?” asked Leal. “It is your birthday, you know; you should be happy on today of all days.”

“I am very happy, Leal. Ethen and I were just talking of all the blessings in our life. I can’t imagine being happier than I am right now, with all of you,” said Dracia as she took Leal’s hand.

She looked out at Roderick and Ethen throwing rocks into the water with the children. She saw Galen and Lexine slowly walking around the lake arm in arm, Lexine dropping a quick kiss on Galen’s cheek. She turned and looked at Leal who looked at her, and she could feel the overwhelming love he had for her. She smiled brightly before reaching up and putting her hand on Leal’s cheek. He turned slightly to face her before bending down and kissing her gently on her lips.

There would be times of trial up ahead, she had no doubt. There would be moments of sadness and grief, but they would be overshadowed by the love and blessings that surrounded her, and for Dracia it was more than enough.

They spent some time by the lake playing with the children. After riding back and eating lunch, Dracia met with Galen and Cara to finalize their trip with both Leal and Lexine joining them. As much as Dracia would miss her children, she was looking forward to some time with Leal.

After the meeting, Dracia checked in with Bryn, spending time playing with him and later his sister in the nursery. After seeing him asleep and Evie happily eating an early supper, she went to her rooms to prepare for the party that would be held that evening. Being spring there were constantly dances and feast in Siccaria, but the event that night was in honor of Dracia’s birthday. She had insisted a large event was not needed, but Lady Elsie and Lord Quain had not wanted to listen. Dracia had rarely been to Siccaria on her birthday, and they wanted to take advantage of the event.

Dracia stared in the long mirror as Lanie adjusted her gown and made sure the Siccarian tiara in her hair was straight. She stepped back and looked at Dracia in her red gown and smiled.

“I believe you are ready, your majesty,” said Lanie as she started cleaning up around her.

Dracia ran her hands down her side and turned. She did still look a little thin, and her face did not look as youthful as it did two years ago, but she did think she looked rather well in her red dress. Lanie had done her hair beautifully, pulling up half into a bun and letting the rest fall around her shoulders. Dracia carefully touched her tiara as she gave a small smile. For the first time in a while, she was not completely unhappy with her looks.

“Thank you, Lanie. I believe I am,” said Dracia as she turned to walk from her room.

“I hope you don’t mind me saying it, your majesty, but I am happy to see you smile,” said Lanie as she stopped what she was doing and stared at Dracia.

“I don’t mind at all, Lanie. I have much reason to smile, and it is time I start remembering it.”

Dracia walked out into the hallway of the Aurorial palace to find Leal twirling their daughter around as though they were dancing. They both stopped and looked at Dracia as she walked up to them, Leal dropping Evie’s hand.

Evie walked over to Dracia and looked up at her. “You look beautiful, mama,” she said with wide eyes as Dracia kneeled down.

“She does,” said Leal as he smiled down at both of them. “She is always beautiful.”

Evie reached towards Dracia’s tiara as Dracia bent down further to give her a better view. Evie gently touched it and then took her hand back quickly.

“You will wear one like it soon, Evie,” said Dracia as she leaned forward and kissed her daughter. “One day you will take your place as a High Noble of Siccaria.”

“But not for a few years,” said Leal as he held out his hand to Dracia.

She took it and stood up. “No, not for a few years, but your dear papa will have to get used to the idea you will live away from him.”

“But I do not have to face it tonight,” said Leal happily as he pulled Dracia close.

“No, not tonight, and I do believe it is time for a certain princess to go to bed,” said Dracia as Lanie walked out into the hall. “Lanie, will you please take Evie to the nursery.”

“Of course, your majesty,” said Lanie as she held out her hand. “Come along, princess. I am sure your great grandmother has left you some treats in the nursery to enjoy before bed.”

Evie took Lanie’s hand as she giggled.

“Good night, my daring,” said Dracia as she looked at her daughter. “You and I shall go for a ride tomorrow all by ourselves.”

“We can ride Aarit?” asked Evie excitedly.

“Yes, and we can go as fast as you would like. Your poor papa will not be around to slow us down,” said Dracia as she bent down and kissed her daughter.

“You make it sound as if I am some overprotective brute,” pouted Leal before giving his own kiss to the princess.

“Not a brute,” offered Dracia with a smile as Leal shook his head.

They both watched as Lanie took Evie down the hall before Leal offered Dracia his arm. She took it and together they walked to the ball room. There were tables set up throughout the room, with a space in the middle for dancing. Dracia spotted Lady Elise and Lord Quain at the end of the room, and she and Leal made their way over to greet them.

While speaking with them both, Dracia saw Ethen and Maia sitting at a nearby table. She excused herself and walked over to them, sitting down besides Maia.

“I appreciate you being here tonight, Maia, but I hope you will not stay too long,” said Dracia as she took Maia’s hand.

“I feel very well tonight, Dracia, and am happy to celebrate your birthday,” said Maia. “I will not tire myself out sitting here at this table. Better I sit here with friends and family than by myself in my rooms.”

“I told you I would stay with your, my dear,” said Ethen. “You did not need to be alone.”

“And have you miss Dracia’s birthday, Ethen? How could you even think it?”

“I would not have minded,” insisted Dracia. “I would have understood that Ethen wished to be with his wife, and that you wish to rest.”

“Well, I am here now and very happy to be so,” smiled Maia as she squeezed Dracia’s hand. “I believe your king might be coming over this way to start the dancing with you.”

“My love, I was hoping you would open the dancing with me, but since we are in Siccaria if you wish to dance with your uncle or cousin, I would understand,” said Leal as he stood next to her.

“I would much rather dance with you than anyone, Leal,” said Dracia as she took his hand and stood up. “I am sure my cousin and uncle both understand.”

“I understand perfectly well, Dracia, but I would like a dance at some point,” said Ethen as he smiled up at her.

“I will be happy to oblige you, Ethen, and Leal can come and visit with Maia,” replied Dracia as Leal nodded.

She let Leal take her out on the floor, putting his hand on her waist and taking her hand with his other. They were joined by several other couples as the music started, and Leal pulled Dracia close.

“I hope you are having a pleasant birthday, my love,” said Leal. “I am glad you are being celebrated in such as way, but I do long for a time I can be alone with you a little later.”

“This party will not last forever, and perhaps you and I could take a moonlit stroll. The weather is very nice, and there is a very pretty, secluded walk on the right side of the palace grounds I would like to see,” said Dracia as she leaned towards him.

“I am very interested to see this walk as well,” whispered Leal. “I hope it is as secluded as you say.”

He leaned down and quickly kissed her neck, making a warmth move through her. He leaned up and gave her a smile that almost made her miss a step of the dance.

“I was thinking,” said Leal as they moved closer to other couples, “that perhaps we should stop at the Northeast Fortress on our way back here. If this trip goes well, then this fall we could visit the southern fortresses before winter sets in. You and Galen have set up these new forces throughout our kingdom, and we should check in on them and show our support.”

“I had planned to send Cara down to the south at the end of the summer, but if you wish to go, I will gladly accompany you. I am sure Galen and Lexine would not mind the trip as long as the harvest is well along in Galen’s lands.”

“Maybe my uncle could meet us at the Southwestern Fortress. It is close to Indomia and would not be a hard ride for him. I want to make sure I am keeping contact with our allies as much as possible,” said Leal.

“Should you not invite King Fannar down to the Northeast Fortress in a few weeks, then?” asked Dracia. “You have not seen him in at least two years.”

“I prefer to keep up with Fannar by messages. I am glad Navalia seems to be at peace, but he was much too flirtatious to you the last time he visited Winsdell.”

“I hear he is to be married soon which means we will probably be invited to the wedding in Navalia. You know we will have to go,” sighed Dracia.

“I have no wish to ever step foot inside the Winter Palace again, and I can imagine you feel the same,” replied Leal. “We will think of some excuse and send some lavish gift. It will have to do.”

“We will see, my king,” said Dracia as she leaned her head on Leal’s shoulder. “If we must go to the Winter Palace, I will keep you safe.”

“You always do, my love,” said Leal as he kissed her head.

The night was going very well. Dracia had danced with several people she loved, and the food was all of her favorites. She was finally dancing with Ethen when Leal walked hurriedly up to them and grabbed Ethen’s arm.

“I think you better escort your wife to your rooms, Ethen. I believe certain things have started, and it seems as if Dracia may share a birthday with your child after all,” whispered Leal with a small smile.

Ethen nodded, and Draica took Leal’s hand as they all three walked over to Maia.

“I am fine, my dear,” said Maia to Ethen, “But I think I better get to my rooms rather quickly. I believe this little one might be in a hurry.”

Maia proved very correct as just after Dracia and Selene had helped Maia to change and get into her bed, the healer and midwife arrived just in time to deliver Maia and Ethen’s second son safely and swiftly. Dracia smiled as she looked down at the baby boy in Maia’s arms. He was a large baby with plenty of dark hair. Where their first son had delicate features like Maia, this child already seemed to favor Ethen.

“Let me go fetch your husband, my dear,” said Dracia as she patted Maia’s arm. “I am sure he is very anxious to know all is well.”

Maia grabbed Dracia’s hand. “Thank you for being here. I know it could not have been easy.”

“It was very easy for me,” answered Dracia with a laugh. “You did all the work, Maia.”

“Dracia,” started Selene with concern as she looked at Dracia over Maia.

“I was very happy to be here, and even more thrilled that all is well,” smiled Dracia. “He is a fine boy. Now, I will send your husband in and wish you good night.”

Maia nodded as she let go of Dracia’s hand and looked back down at her new son. Dracia took one more look at the child. She had worried she would be filled with sadness or even jealousy at this moment, seeing a healthy child, safely delivered, but all she could feel was joy. She walked out of the room and down to the study. She opened it to find Ethen, Quain, Leal, Roderick, and Lady Elise sitting around the fire. She smiled and walked up to them as they all stood.

“All is well, cousin,” said Dracia as she looked at Ethen. “You have another fine son.”

“And Maia?” asked Ethen as he took Dracia’s hand.

“She is doing very well. It was a quick delivery, and I suppose as easy as one can be, though these things are never easy, believe me.”

Lady Elise laughed. “No, they are not.”

“Go, to your wife, Ethen. I am sure Maia wouldn’t mind seeing any of you should you wish to go. I know you would like to see your new grandson, Lord Quain.”

“I would, and I know my mother would like to see another great grandchild,” said Lord Quain.

“That is four now, Quain. It makes me sound very ancient,” said Lady Elsie as she took her son’s arm.

“Tell Maia, I will visit her tomorrow,” said Dracia. “I am sure Evie will want to meet her cousin.”

“Thank you for being with her, Dracia,” said Ethen as he brought Dracia’s hand to his lips. “I know it meant much to her, and me as well.”

“I was thrilled to be there. Now go,” said Draica.

She watched all three of them leave the room before she turned and looked at Roderick and Leal.

“You are well, my love?” asked Leal as he came forward and took both of her hands.

“Of course, I am well, Leal,” said Dracia. “A future High Noble has been born, and Maia is healthy. What more could I want?”

“Dracia,” said Leal quietly. “Whatever you might say, I know you cannot be unaffected. I know I wasn’t. I don’t believe any of us were. We all could only think of that night.”

Leal glanced at Roderick who gave them both a very small smile.

“I was a little worried on how I would react,” said Dracia as she squeezed Leal’s hands and let them go. “But in the end, all I could feel was joy and excitement. You should go peek in at your new nephew, Roderick. I am sure your wife would like to see you.”

Roderick looked at her closely, and she made sure to give him a reassuring smile. Though he hadn’t been her second in years, it seemed he would always feel some sort of responsibility for her well-being.

“I plan to take Evie out for a ride after lunch tomorrow. Perhaps toward the end of our ride, we might meet you and Gregory by the stream? I am sure they would enjoy riding along side each other, and I know I would be very happy to see you.”

“Then I will plan on it, my queen,” said Roderick with a bow.

Dracia took his hand and leaned up to kiss him on his cheek. “Good night, Roderick.”

He wished her and Leal a good night before he left the room.

“Well, our night certainly did not turn out as planned,” said Leal as Dracia turned to him.

“No, but it is not very late,” remarked Draica looking at the clock. “Perhaps you and I might still take our walk if you aren’t too tired or haven’t had too much drink with Ethen?”

“I am very well, dearest, and happy to walk with you,” said Leal as he offered Dracia his arm.

She took it and they walked out of the study and towards a side door that led to the outside.

“Let’s stop in for a moment,” said Leal as they passed by the nursery. “I wish for a quick glimpse of our children.”

Dracia nodded, and quietly opened the door to the nursery. They walked into the dim room, lit by a couple of candles on tables. One attendant was sitting in a rocking chair and seemed to be dozing. They could hear the other attendant bustling around in the connected room. Leal walked over carefully to the small bed that held their daughter, and Dracia followed. They looked down at their sleeping daughter, the only time they ever saw her stay still. She looked so beautiful and peaceful as she slept. Dracia could hardly believe she was real with her perfect smooth skin, and her delicate long lashes. She reached down and softy stroked Evie’s hair as she bent down and placed a small kiss on her forehead.

“She is so beautiful,” said Draica softly as she straightened up. Leal stood behind her and put his arms around her waist.

“Of course, she is,” whispered Leal. “She is you made over.”

“I think she has a bit of you as well,” said Dracia as she looked over her shoulder at Leal. “Every time she smiles, I see you. When she laughs, she sounds much like you.”

They left Evie’s side and went over to look at their son as he slept on his stomach. Dracia put her hand gently on his back as Leal stood very close behind her, gazing down at Brynn.

“He is a fine boy,” said Leal very quietly. “I hope I can teach him all he needs to know to be a good king.”

“If you teach him to be like you, then that will be enough,” whispered Dracia as Leal put his chin on her shoulder, and she kept her hand on her son. They stayed like that for several moments, listening to Brynn’s soft even breaths.

As the nursery attendant woke up, they both excused themselves and walked out into the hall. Dracia took Leal’s arm and they continued towards the side door. As they walked out into the moonlit night, she looked up at her husband to see he seemed a little misty eyed.

“I hope you are well, your majesty,” said Dracia.

“I am very well, my love,” said Leal as he pulled Dracia very close. “Much better than I ever deserved to be.”

He stopped her close to a large tree that grew just outside the palace.

“I know you say you can sense just how much I love you, but I still wish to try to tell you,” said Leal as he took both of her hands, turning her to face him. “You are everything to me, Dracia, you and our children. I would give up everything I have for you; my title, my kingdom, even my life, they all mean nothing to be compared to what I have with you.”

“But as I have told you many times, you will never have to give any of them up,” said Dracia adamantly. “I will keep them all safe for you. Anyone who tried to take your title or your kingdom, and especially your life, would have to face me, and they would never be successful.”

“My warrior queen,” said Leal softly as pulled her closer to him.

“And you still don’t mind having such a fierce queen?” asked Draica.

“No, because you are mine,” said Leal as he bent down and kissed her.
