Chapter 89
Chapter 89
Mike Halper was his subordinate, dressed in black and standing by his side.
“Boss, their marriage is fake and they don’t remember what happened in the past. As long as you appear at the right time, Ms. Doherty will know that Julian is just trash.” Mike was in his thirties and had been working for the man for many years. Mike’s chin was covered in stubble and his hair was carefully styled with wax.
The man raised the glass containing red wine and shook his head slightly. “No need to hurry. The girl is injured. Let Julian take good care of her these days. Now is not the right time for me to show up.”
“Yes. Boss. As you wish. How about Ms. Doherty being cyberbullied? Will you do something about it?” Mike asked.
The man swayed the glass and took a sip of the wine. When the pleasant taste filled his mouth, he said, “Let’s wait and see. Julian can handle such a trivial matter effortlessly. If he’s willing to help. I’ll just stand by and watch.”
“I see, Boss.”
“How’s Jacob?”
“Boss. Julian has sent many guards to protect him. Our men can’t get close. Do you want me…to go there myself tonight?” Mike asked tentatively.
The man did not turn around the whole time. When he heard Mike’s question, he shook his head and replied, “No need. Just give Julian some hope. The more hopeful he is now, the more disappointed he will be in the future, right?”
“You’re foresighted. Boss.”
The man sneered.
His thin lips curled up in a scornful smile as he brought the glass to his lips again.
On the way home, Julian passed by a popular snack shop in Highclere City. Thinking of Alexandra, he stopped the car and bought several kinds of snacks.
He figured that Alexandra would like them.
She loved anything that was delicious.
The moment he entered the house, he saw Alexandra sitting on the sofa in a daze.
There was an open packet of biscuits on the coffee table, but it was full and she hadn’t eaten much.
Julian walked over and placed the snacks on the table. “I bought you snacks from Zampella’s. They sell the best snacks in Highclere City. Try them.”
Alexandra was not in the mood for snacks. She looked up at Julian and said, “Mr. Ranford, how is everything going? Did I cause you trouble? Has anyone recognized you as the man in the photo?”
Alexandra’s face was filled with apprehension.
She seemed to have forgotten that she was the one in trouble and all she was concerned about was whether Julian would be affected by it.
Julian’s heart melted. “Your name and photo are all over the media, yet I’m the one you’re worried about.”
Alexandra frowned. “I’m fine. I didn’t do those things. Those who care about me will believe me even without my explanation. Why should I explain to those who questioned me? I’m just afraid that it will reflect badly on you. No one can tell it’s you, right?”
“Unfortunately, someone already has,” Julian said.
Alexandra pouted in response.
Julian said, “Carson recognized me and has worked out our relationship.”
“He has?” Alexandra panicked. “How did he make it? He won’t tell Emery about it, will he?”
Julian saw her anxious face and regretted teasing her. He said seriously, “No. Carson isn’t always reliable, but he knows what he should and should not do.”
“Good to hear that Alexandra wondered if Carson would laugh at Julian after knowing that she was Julian’s stand–in bride.
That Julian had married a bumpkin.
Julian didn’t know what Alexandra was thinking with her head down. He walked to the sofa and sat beside her, reaching out his big hand and gently stroking her head.
“Don’t think too much about it. As I said, leave it to me.”
“Okay” Alexandra tilted her head to the side and avoided Julian’s hand.
When Julian’s hand touched the top of her head, her heart thumped and she felt very secure. She didn’t want to be addicted to that feeling.
Alexandra lowered her head again and kept silent.
Julian looked at her and wondered how many things Alexandra had forgotten.
“Where does she come from? Where will she go?” he thought inside.
Julian looked back on everything that had happened since they’d met. She was kind, cheerful, stingy, and timid. He had thought that she was just a naive little girl.
But after knowing her exam results, her superb marksmanship, and her mysterious friend, Julian had no doubt that there were many intriguing secrets about Alexandra waiting for him to discover.
She had lost a lot of important memories. That was why she had appeared to be a cute and naive girl since they met.
With all her past stories left behind, she became the girl he knew.
At this moment, the doorbell rang and interrupted Julian’s train of thought.
He and Alexandra looked over in unison.
Julian was a little puzzled. He hadn’t asked Marco or Frank to come so he had no idea who it was.
He had a bad feeling.
He got up and opened the door. On the porch were Josephine, Caroline, and Josephine’s personal maid Ruth.
Josephine seemed to be in a foul mood. She hadn’t met Julian for days but seeing him didn’t cheer her up.
Caroline said beside her, Jule, I thought you went on a business trip. It turns out that you’re really at Tropical Lagoon Residences, Mom saw the news online and was so worried about you. She was afraid that you wouldn’t tell her what happened on the phone so she asked the driver to send her here to see you?
Julian didn’t say anything. He knew very well that if it weren’t for Caroline, Josephine wouldn’t have learned the boring news online given that she barely used smartphones.
Julian nodded. “Grams, sorry for making you worry and coming all the way here…”
Josephine interrupted him. “Where’s Alexandra?”
Julian replied, “In the living room.”
Julian stepped aside. Josephine walked through the door with Caroline’s help.
Alexandra had been looking at the door curiously and saw Josephine and Caroline once they walked in.
Alexandra was so scared that her heart lifted into her throat and she shot to her feet. “Grams…”
Josephine immediately noticed her bandaged left foot. Seeing that she had trouble standing steadily, she dropped Caroline’s hand and quickened her pace. “Gosh. How did you get injured? How could Julian let this happen?”
Josephine helped Alexandra gain balance and looked at her with a worried face.
The moment she finished reading the posts Caroline showed her, she knew that someone was throwing dirt at Alexandra.
However, she also saw her grandson in the post. She couldn’t understand why Julian and Alexandra had appeared at Mount Victoria Hospital together when Julian should be on a business trip and Alexandra with her ill family.
Except for Tropical Lagoon Residences. Josephine had no idea where the two of them could be holed up.
Therefore, she came to find out what had happened with Caroline who had just returned from a visit to her family.
Alexandra answered gingerly, “Grams, I’m fine. I just accidentally sprained my ankle.”
Josephine helped her sit down. It had been days since she last saw Alexandra and she missed her very much.
Josephine sighed and looked at Julian reproachfully. “If the two of you wanted to spend time alone, you could just tell me directly. You didn’t have to spin excuses like you needed to go on a business trip.”
“Grams, we didn’t!” Seeing that Josephine got the wrong idea, Alexandra hurried to explain.
Julian approached them at this moment and said to Josephine, “Grams, sorry. I was afraid that you would be unhappy, so I lied to you. We’ll go back to keep you company in a few days.”
Alexandra looked at Julian in surprise. “He’s lying through his teeth!
“Saying that is agreeing to what Josephine just said!” she exclaimed in her heart.
