Chapter Chapter Twenty Two
That night, Carver was sitting in the foyer. Tora’s book was in his hands. He couldn’t help but think back to those days. Back when everything seemed so simple with saving the world. Back when Skye and Cassidy were the ones who had to save the day and learned elemental magic from the different sorcerers and magicians who had served the first Guardian.
Carver shook his head. Out of the four sorcerers who had taught Cassidy elemental magic, he was the only one still alive. Robin Hood had died shortly after training Cassidy how to use earth magic, Romeo, the master of air magic, had died four years before from a fire that had ravaged his home and Cedric, the master of fire, hadn’t even been able to survive the disease that had been unleashed on the world years before.
“What am I supposed to do Nichallo?” Carver asked. He couldn’t see how Molly was supposed to defeat the Old Ones. It had taken all of Cassidy’s elemental magic and the love that Skye and he had for each other to defeat the Dark Ones. Molly didn’t have either. Carver looked at the patio.
Molly was back out there. She was sitting on a chair with her legs against her chest and gazing out at the lake. She hadn’t noticed that the sun had set. She was thinking about where she would go once the Old Ones had been dealt with. A tear came from her eye. She knew that she couldn’t go to her mother’s side of the family. They would try to force her to change everything about herself to fit their perfect family vision.
Molly knew that she couldn’t go to her dad. She didn’t even know who he was. Molly’s mother had never told her about her father or who he was. All she would say was that he wasn’t important enough to keep in their lives and left it at that. Molly had a feeling that her mother had forced the man to give up his parental rights.
After everything that had happened to her the last few days, she knew that she would never fit in with her mother’s side. They were too religious and after the Powerful Ones had locked her in a cage, she would never want to believe in any god ever again.
“Mind if I join you?” Molly looked up to see Eir standing there. “You looked like you could use some company.” Eir explained.
Molly gestured to the seat next to her. “It’s your home. You can go wherever you want.” She reminded Eir.
Eir sat down next to Molly. “It is my home but you’re my guest and I do respect my guests if they want privacy.” She told Molly. “But it looks like you were unsure of what to do.”
“How did you know that?” Molly asked.
Eir smiled. “You’re not the first one I’ve met who had to make a hard choice.” She replied. “I’ve met many people over the years, both mortals and immortals, who had difficult choices to make.” She propped her feet up on the table. “So what’s bugging you?”
Molly looked at the house. She could see Carver heading into another room and out of sight. “I don’t know where I belong.” She told Eir. “I’ve never really fit at home with my mom, I never got along with her extended family. I have never met my father.” She took a breath before she continued. “Now that my mom is gone, I don’t know where I’ll end up.”
Eir thought about it. “I never really knew my parents.” She admitted, causing Molly to turn to her. “I wasn’t always a Powerful One. I was once human. At least I was until I was about four or five. That was when Freyja, the leader of the Valkyries, took me under her wing and trained me to become a warrior for the Valkyries. At eighteen, I drank the mead from Odin’s cup and became a Powerful One.” She explained.
“Did you ever want to meet your parents?” Molly asked.
“I did at first but after a few years, I never really thought about meeting them.” Eir replied. “When I drank the mead and became an immortal Powerful One, I knew that I had to cut off that part of my life.”
“Sounds lonely.” Molly said. She knew that she would cut off her mother’s side of the family if she could. She wanted to find her father or at least some place to call home.
“If you want my advice, you should talk to Carver about him adopting you.” Eir told Molly. “He has protected you the way a father should protect his daughter.” She had a feeling that Carver would make the perfect father for Molly.
That was when Molly thought of something. “The Powerful Ones locked me away because I was the Silver Child, right?” She asked. She already knew the answer. “Did you guys know about Carver’s wife being the previous Silver Child?”
“We did.” Eir replied. “But we didn’t have a role in her murder if that’s what you’re wondering. We’re ruthless and war like but we weren’t about to kill her. We had no reason to. She had helped defeat Chaos, the most powerful Dark One in existence.”
“Did you know that she had a miscarriage years ago?” Molly then asked. She wondered how much attention the Powerful Ones gave Silver and Gold people.
Eir frowned. “What?” She asked. “Who told you that?”
“Carver did.” Molly admitted. “He told me earlier when he was telling me about his life with Skye.” She wasn’t sure why Eir was acting shocked. “He said that the doctors had told his wife and he that it had been a stillborn.”
“That’s impossible.” Eir told Molly. “Silver and Golden Ones always survive being born.” She should know, after all, she had seen so many children with golden and silver auras being born. She knew that if any had been stillborn, she would have been tasked, like all the Valkyries, to take them up to Valhalla. All people with golden or silver auras were taken up to Valhalla by the Valkyries. Eir looked at the house. “The doctors told Carver that?” She asked. Something wasn’t adding up.
“Yeah. When Skye and Carver asked for their child’s body, they were told that somehow there was a paper mix-up and the baby had been cremated. They had gotten an urn full of ashes.” Molly replied. She wondered why Eir was acting strange.
“Molly, I’m telling you, those doctors lied to Carver and Skye.” Eir said. “When a Silver Child or Golden Child is born, there’s no issue or defect. They’re born perfectly. It’s so any prophecy about them can happen as planned. If the time for a prophecy to be fulfilled by one of them is at hand and the one meant to fulfill it has died at birth, it would be disastrous. That was why the Powerful Ones decreed that all Silver and Golden children were to be designed to survive being born.”
Molly wasn’t sure how she felt about being told that her genetics had been tampered with but she knew that if what Eir was saying was true, then someone had lied to Carver and Skye. “You think their child is still alive?” She asked.
“The child has to be.” Eir replied. “Assuming of course that the child was a Silver or Golden one. But usually the Silver and Golden auras are carried through bloodlines even if not every person with the aura has it activated or knew about it to begin with.”
Molly was about to ask something when she heard rustling in the forest. She looked toward the forest. It was too dark to see anything in the trees. There was more rustling. “No one knows I’m here, right?” She asked.
Eir took her sword out and pointed it at the forest. “Get inside.” She ordered Molly. She knew that they would have a better chance at facing whatever it was inside her home. Anything that wasn’t human was not allowed in her home.
The two ran into Eir’s home. Eir closed the door and locked it. “Get Carver and Tora.” She ordered Molly. “I’ll stay here to see who is showing their face now.” She looked at the forest through the door. She could hear Molly running up the stairs.
To Eir’s surprise, a pale young woman with long black hair in a brown dress came out of the forest. The pale young woman smiled, baring her fangs before she flew at the door.
Eir stumbled back as the woman hit the door. To her relief, the woman was sent stumbling back. She smiled. “Didn’t expect that, did you?” She asked the pale young woman. “Now who are you and why are you trying to break into my home?
“I am Mercy Brown.” Mercy told Eir as she went back up to the door. “You have someone I am after.”
Eir knew that Mercy was speaking of Molly. She looked closer at Mercy. “You’re one of the vampires.” She said. She knew of Mercy Brown and what she really was.
“That’s right.” Mercy said. “Hand over the girl and I’ll leave the rest of you alone.” She didn’t care about the rest of them. She just wanted the Silver Child so she could get revenge on Nichallo.
“Sorry but you’re not getting in here.” Eir told Mercy. Not wanting to give Mercy a chance to speak to her, she ran up the stairs to the bedrooms. Molly, Tora and Carver were in the hallway up there. “We have a situation.” Eir told them. “A vampire by the name of Mercy Brown is here for Molly.”
“Mercy Brown? The girl who died of that disease but the superstitious believed she was a vampire?” Tora asked. She had read the story in school.
“She’s an actual vampire.” Carver told Tora. “Mercy and nearly her entire family were vampires that served the Titans. Nichallo killed the vampires and then cast a spell over the entire town so they would think it was something else.” He remembered finding out about the dark memory spell from Nichallo.
“What are we going to do?” Molly asked in a small voice. She was starting to get scared by how many people wanted her for their own purpose.
“We’re not going to hand you over if that’s what you’re worried about.” Eir told her. “Vampires can’t enter someone’s home without permission and my house is enchanted so everyone needs permission to enter my home.” She hadn’t counted on vampires showing up at her home but it was a good way to keep stalkers away.
“We’re trapped here, aren’t we?” Tora asked, her heart sinking. “As long as Mercy is out there, we won’t ever be able to leave again.” She would never see her mother again.
Carver knelt in front of the two young girls. “Hey, I promise you that we’re going to escape.” He told them. He took their hands in his. “We’re going to find your mom Tora.” He said before he looked at Molly. “No one is going to hand you over to that vampire.”
Molly and Tora both hugged Carver. Carver held them close. “I promise you’ll both be okay.” He told them. He then released them. “Now get to a safe room while Eir and I deal with Mercy.” He told them.
Carver waited until the two kids were in a bedroom before he turned to Eir. He noticed that she was giving him a look. “What?” He asked.
“Are you sure you’re not a father?” Eir asked. She saw how fatherly Carver had acted right there.
“I’m sure.” Carver replied before he made a trident appear from his aura.
“Right.” Eir said. She made a mental note to talk to Carver later about the supposed stillborn Skye and he had years before.
