Chapter 31
From kitchenware to a single scallion, she listed it all out.
He stared at the paper, a strong feeling stirring in his heart, like something was about to burst but was forcibly suppressed. He had no clue why he rushed back here in the middle of the night.
Having skipped dinner, Isaac's stomach was feeling off. He dropped the paper and collapsed onto the couch.
Brittany tossed and turned, but sleep was elusive. In the middle of the night, she got up to use the bathroom and saw Isaac curled up on the couch. His tall frame seemed pitifully cramped on the mini couch. She didn't plan on talking. But after emerging from the bathroom, she heard his deepening breaths. Something was wrong, and Isaac's posture seemed off.
She switched on the light and walked over. Isaac's face was drenched in cold sweat, his body rigid, his breathing rapid.
"Zakky, do you have a tummy ache?"
Brittany noticed his hand pressed against his stomach and instantly understood. She quickly ordered some stomach medicine online, fetched him a warm glass of water from the kitchen, and brought it to his lips.
"Zakky, have some water."
Isaac's mind was clear. He raised his eyes and took a couple of sips, but it didn't help.
Remembering some health tips she'd read before, Brittany hesitated for a moment before reaching towards his back.
Isaac was on high alert. He quickly grabbed her hand. "What are you doing?"
Though his tone was harsh, his words lacked conviction.
Isaac's grip was causing Brittany's wrist to throb with pain. She spoke softly. "I've read some health tips before that can help relieve the pain. Let go of my hand first."
If it wasn't for the fact that he'd taken her in before, she wouldn't be helping him!
Isaac let go of her hand, still somewhat skeptical. Brittany shook her hand, then pressed a spot on his back, right below his shoulder blades.
"Does it hurt?"
Isaac could clearly feel a sharp pain. He frowned. "A bit."
Brittany found the right spot and started massaging. She was practically half-kneeling on the ground, her entire body pressed against his.
The stomach cramps seemed to alleviate significantly, and Isaac's breathing gradually stabilized.
Brittany was wearing a round-necked pajama top, so when she bent over, a small patch of skin was exposed. Isaac happened to catch a glimpse of it. Uncontrollably, he remembered the sensation of their first touch!
He awkwardly shifted his gaze. "I'm not in pain anymore."
They were too close. It was unsafe. Realizing their awkward position, Brittany quickly backed away.
"Do you want something to eat? I ordered your medicine."
Isaac lowered his head. "I want some pasta."
He had no appetite for the food at home, but at this moment, he craved the pasta Brittany made.
Just then, the doorbell rang. It was probably the delivery. Brittany, holding the pasta, went out to get the delivery. Then she helped Isaac to the dining table, took out the stomach medicine, and carefully read the instructions. "Take the stomach medicine one hour after meals."
Isaac wiped the cold sweat from his face with a tissue. "Thanks." Brittany awkwardly withdrew her hand. "Eat slowly and rest early." Given their relationship, she didn't want to overstay her welcome. Isaac watched her retreating figure. "Actually, if you..." "Good night."
Brittany cut him off, closed the door, and ended the conversation.
Isaac's fingers tightened slightly. He was going to say that it would be okay if she didn't move out. He stared at the pasta and fell into deep thought.
The following morning, Brittany woke up to find Isaac had left.
She moved all her belongings into the car, tidied up the room, and left the bank card with a balance of 50,000 dollars on the dining table. It was the agreed payment.
Even though Isaac was reluctant to accept it, she felt obligated to pay him since her last-minute decision had cost him his first marriage.
Moving into her newly rented house, Brittany rolled up her sleeves and cleaned the entire place. By the time she was done, it was already 6 p.m.
She walked into the kitchen with her groceries, planning to prepare dinner.
Suddenly, there was a frantic knock on the door.
"Coming."
Brittany opened the door, and a steel pipe came swinging at her. "You owe money and refuse to pay, come out!"
