Chapter 12
James’s eyes flew open as he sensed the dark magic in the room that Audrey was in. He flew up from his seat and ran into the other room. He stopped when he saw Abigail Williams. It had been over hundreds of years since he last saw her but he still recognized her. Abigail Williams was facing Audrey. The witch was slowly freezing the room. The ice was spreading out from her feet. James could sense the darkness and hatred coming from the witch. He looked at Audrey. Audrey looked like she was paralyzed with fear. No doubt it was because of the way that Abigail Williams looked. James took a step towards Abigail Williams and as his foot touched the ground, it made a creaking sound, catching the attention of Abigail Williams.
Abigail Williams spun around and glared at James. “You!” She hissed angrily.
James took a small step back. “Abigail.” He said. His eyes flickered towards Audrey. She was still standing there in shock. He quickly looked at Abigail Williams. Maybe if he kept talking and kept the witch distracted, Audrey would run for a safe place. “I see that not even Death could keep you locked up.” James continued. “I bet he wasn’t too happy when you came back to the world of the living.” He took a small step to the right.
Abigail Williams conjured up a fireball and threw it at James. James’s eyes widened and he ducked behind the couch. “Compared to Josiah, the Horseman of Death is a weakling!” Abigail Williams shouted at James as the fireball flew into the wall. She didn’t even notice Audrey running for the staircase. “With what Josiah and his master have planned, the Horseman of Death and the other Horsemen of the Apocalypse will be mere footnotes in the history of the Black Hand.” Abigail Williams reached out towards the couch and the couch flew over James before trapping him on the ground.
James groaned as he tried to push the couch off of him so he could get free. “So you’re nothing more than a footnote as well?” He asked, trying to keep the witch’s attention on him. He didn’t know if it was because of his talking or if Abigail Williams was just really angry at him but she quickly appeared over him.
“I will do whatever Josiah and his master asks of me so that the Darkness can rise up.” Abigail Williams told James. “Remember, I am a Black Hand after all.” Like James could forget that. It was hard to forget all of the deaths that Abigail Williams had caused during the Salem Witch Trials before Gabriel had stopped her.
Audrey ran into a room and locked the door. She backed away from it and hid in a closet. She got as far back as she could from the closet door before crouching down. She held her legs as close to her chest in an attempt to be hidden. She didn’t know who the figure was downstairs but it seemed like it and James had a history together, a history that didn’t end well for either of them. She hadn’t heard everything that they said but the way that the figure had been glaring at James, it was clear that the figure was with the Black Hand. Audrey heard something making a loud thud downstairs. She jumped a little. Whatever was happening downstairs, it was pretty big and clearly dangerous.
Audrey reached up and pulled a few of the coats down. She quickly covered herself up to try to hide. With all of the coats hanging between her and the closet door, she hoped that she would be safe until James defeated the figure downstairs or Jasper was able to step in and fight the figure. Audrey thought about what James had called the figure. He had said Abigail. From the way that the figure had been dressed, it looked like it had come from Puritan time. Audrey’s eyes widened as she realized who the figure was downstairs. It was Abigail Williams, one of the girls who had been responsible for starting the Salem Witch Trials. Audrey hadn’t believed that Abigail had been an actual witch but now that she thought about it, it made sense that she was a real witch, especially if there was hatred between her and James.
Audrey heard another loud thud coming from downstairs. Her heart began to beat fast as she started hearing someone walking up the steps. She knew it was too late to try to run now. She nearly screamed when she heard the person walking by the door before the walking stopped. Audrey closed her eyes tightly. She wished that she was anywhere but there. She jumped when she heard the door opening. It was just a matter of time now before she was found.
Abigail Williams walked into the room. She could sense that the Chosen One was in there. She cackled. “Do you really think you’re safe from me?” She asked. “I am the greatest witch to have ever lived. No one is safe from me! I would have killed the Chosen One from when I last walked the Earth if it hadn’t been for Gabriel’s interference!” Her eyes went to the closet. “You can’t hide from me Chosen One!” She cried as she ran to the closet. She opened the doors and pushed the coats aside. The pile of coats that had been on the ground flew up into the air. To Abigail Williams’s surprise, the girl wasn’t there.
Under the couch back downstairs, James sensed that Audrey was gone. She wasn’t dead but she wasn’t in the building anymore. He knew that that should have been impossible but he had a feeling that he knew where Audrey had escaped to. She was most likely at this time experiencing a spiritual journey and was in the spirit realm. Since Audrey was now in a safe place, James could focus on trying to break free of his prison so he could fight the witch. His eyes glowed blue and the couch flew up into the air. James got out of the way and set it back down. He turned towards the stairs. “Now it’s you and me Abigail.” He said.
Outside the building, Jasper was trying to get in but he couldn’t. All of the doors were locked and each time he broke a window, it repaired itself instantly. He backed away from the door as the window right above the lock repaired itself. He gritted his teeth. He should have known that the lodge had been enchanted to keep people out. No doubt Abigail Williams had cast it. She must have wanted to be alone with Audrey long enough to kill her if she had cast the spell on the entire lodge. He knew though that James was inside but after hearing all of the loud thuds, he had a feeling that it wasn’t going well at all for James.
Jasper heard a vehicle pulling up. He spun around to see Gabriel running from his car towards the lodge. “Where’s Audrey?” Gabriel asked as he joined Jasper.
Jasper pointed at the lodge. “She’s in there with James and Abigail.” He answered Gabriel. “But I don’t think its going all that well for either James or Audrey. There’s too much noise in there and it doesn’t sound good.”
That was when James came flying through a window towards them. The two men jumped out of the way as James flew over the porch and hit the gravel road. Before either of the two men could do anything, they were thrown off of the porch as well. They landed in the grass next to the road.
Gabriel looked up to see Abigail Williams hovering over him. “Where is the Chosen one?” Abigail Williams screamed angrily. “I must kill her!” She wasn’t bothered by the fact that Gabriel was there even though Harold and Hannah had told her that the man would be in the town during that time.
Gabriel shook his head. “You won’t succeed at killing Audrey.” He told Abigail Williams. “She will defeat you and those you work with.” He believed that to be true. It had to be. “You failed at killing the Chosen One during the Trials and you’ll fail at killing her this time around as well.” He glared at the witch. “You will fail Witch.” He told her.
Abigail Williams hissed angrily. “We’ll see about that old man.” She told him. She looked at Jasper. “Where did the Chosen One go?” She demanded. One of these two men had to know why the Chosen One wasn’t there anymore. She would have asked James but the boy was unconscious.
Many Years in The Past…
Audrey groaned as she woke up. She wasn’t sure what had happened to her. The last thing she remembered was wishing that she had been anywhere besides being in the back of the closet. She looked around her. To her surprise, she was in the forest on a wide rocky trail. She got up onto her feet and looked around. She had no idea where in the forest she was or how she even got there. She felt a little lightheaded. She wondered where she was. That was when she saw a horse pulling a wagon. Her eyes widened when she saw the people on it. The two men were wearing breeches and linen shirts under jerkins with large hats. There was a cage on the wagon. Audrey couldn’t believe it. There were five women in the cage. They were wearing gowns with aprons and coifs on their heads. The women’s hands were tied behind their backs.
Audrey quickly ducked and hid behind some bushes so she wouldn’t be spotted. She saw another four men walking behind the wagon. They had guns that Audrey had only seen in museums. Audrey crouched even lower so she wouldn’t risk being caught. She looked closer at the men walking behind the wagon. She had a feeling that if she looked at them closely, she would see the emblem of the Black Hand on them. She wasn’t sure why but she believed that the Black Hand was causing this.
She watched two of the men walk away from the rest of the group. She realized that she was stuck there. There was no way that she could escape or leave her spot. She watched the two men looking around before a young woman joined them. For some reason, the young woman looked familiar.
“Have you found the Chosen One yet?” The young woman asked. Audrey’s eyes widened. It was Abigail Williams, the witch that she had seen back in the lodge. Audrey realized that if Abigail Williams was standing here, still alive and full of life, then that meant, Audrey’s heart sank, that she was in Salem Massachusetts during the time of the Salem Witch Trials.
The two men shook their heads. Abigail Williams frowned. “She couldn’t have gotten far.” She said. “Salem is a small town. Keep searching for her and don’t stop until you’ve found her. You know that he wants the Chosen One for the ritual.” She managed to restrain herself. “What is the point of having all of these killings happen if we can’t get one simple girl?” One of the men reached for his sword but before he could grab it, Abigail Williams grabbed him by the neck. “Don’t even think of trying to kill me.” She said in a dangerous voice. “Remember, I’m protected by him.”
Audrey frowned as she watched the three. It seemed like the two Black Hands didn’t trust Abigail Williams. She wondered if the Black Hand had any women in it or if it was just that the two men didn’t like the witch. There was also the question of the “him” that Abigail Williams mentioned. It was obviously a powerful member of the Black Hand or even the Darkness itself. Audrey tried to remember if there were any German people in Salem during this trial. She then realized that the Man with the German Accent wouldn’t dare allow himself to be caught in Salem because of his immortality and most likely had followers who were mortal to lead the trials.
Audrey looked at Abigail Williams again. The witch looked young. Maybe twelve or so. She tried to remember what she had learned in history class about the Salem Witch Trials. That Abigail Williams had died at a young age after the Witch Trials. Audrey remembered that the Abigail Williams in the future seemed to have a deep hatred towards James from the way she had been glaring at him. Audrey realized what she had to do. She had to find James. She looked at the three people on the road and, as quietly as she could, crawled away.
