Chapter 701 Don't Come Again
Jay did not want to let down Eva, yet he could not give her false hopes either.
"You may leave now," Eva said with glee.
Jay simply nodded as he made his way out of Eva's room.
On his way out Jay saw Pam, standing idly in the hallway.
"Mrs. Su, I'm leaving." Jay spoke in a deep and polite manner.
"Will you visit Eva again?" Pam's voice was choked with sobs.
"Mrs. Su, do you want me to visit her again?" Jay asked.
Pam shook her head and then nodded. "I never wanted you around Eva, but she truly looks happy around you. Forthat reason, I hope you can visit her often. But as a mother, I want what's best for my daughter. Do you understand what I'm saying, Jay?"
"Mrs. Su, I understand. I am sorry." Jay felt a jolt of sadness strike his heart. In that moment, he truly wanted to apologize to Pam.
Deep inside, Jay knew it was all his fault.
However, there was nothing he could do.
"1 don't want your apology, Jay. Don't come here ever again, please. I'm afraid that having you around would bring demise to Eva and to our whole family as well," Pam pleaded.
Pam might be a tough businesswoman, yet she was also a mother. She couldn't help but cry in front of Jay.
"Understood. I promise to stay away from Eva, Mrs. Su," Jay said in a tender voice.
He fully understood where Pam was coming from.
Before he made his way outside of the house, Jay turned to look at Eva's room.
She was singing a song. The song gave the man a serene sense of nostalgia.
That was the song Jay used to sing to Eva when they were together.
Sadness filled the man's heart. Jay found himself rushing downstairs, overwhelmed with emotions.
It felt as if the music followed him, eventually turning lame and desolate.
Jay staggered out of the Su family house. Somehow, he felt limp.
He was hearing things. He knew Eva's soft voice very well, yet her singing sounded gloomy and shrill. He became utterly disoriented.
He had hoped that running would take him away from reality. Jay wanted to escape Eva.
'She couldn't stand up for the rest of her life, could she?'
Jay grieved sorely. Tears streamed down his face as he drove away.
He drove past the speed limit. Fortunately, there were little to no cars on the road at midnight.
If things were different, Jay could have ended in a hospital instead of his home.
Doris had just finished a conversation with Charles. She was evidently uneasy.
She was half asleep when she heard a car drive inside the courtyard. She wrapped a coat around her and hurriedly went downstairs to meet Jay.
She was surprised to find Jay so helpless.
"What happened, Jay?" Doris' voice was filled with worry.
"Doris!" Jay hugged her tightly.
"What happened? Why are you covered with cream?" Jay had been out of his rhythm lately. Seeing him covered in cream made Doris wonder, 'What happened to him? Has he been celebrating a special day with a woman?
Does he become a playboy again?'
"I went to the Su family house for Eva's birthday. I did not mean to hide it from you. I'm sorry to be home this late," Jay hurriedly explained. He then held Doris' face and kissed her tenderly.
Doris was still confused. 'What's wrong with him?'
"Doris, I will come home after I get off work. Eva's past was her fate. It had nothing to do with me. That should not bring me down. I have my own life to live." Jay felt some sort of relief. He no longer wanted to punish himself because of the past. 'Eva and I have our respective lives. We both must learn to move forward.
What's done is done. It's time for me to move on.'
He couldn't give up his own life because of Eva. If he couldn't move on from the past, then he would be tormenting himself.
Jay was not that kind of a man.
"That's great to hear. I am happy to hear these things from you. By the way, do you happen to know where Nancy is? Charles called me earlier to ask about her. I already rang Nancy up, but she did not pick up. The two of them are at odds recently. Would you mind talking Charles personally?"1 Doris was not the kind of woman who was possessive. In her eyes, the past between Jay and Eva had nothing to do with her.
Now that Jay had returned to his senses, she felt genuine happiness.
At the end of the day, all that mattered to Doris was Jay's commitment. She was willing to look over the man's past and love him unconditionally.
Jay then took out his phone and called Charles.
"Charles, have you found Nancy yet?" Jay was duly concerned for his friend.
"Yes, I found her," Charles said rather coldly.
"Where did she go? Is everything okay?" Jay asked.
"She's fine. I got to go, Jay." Without waiting for Jay's response, Charles hung the phone call.
"Did Charles find Nancy?" Doris asked.
"Yes, but Charles sounded a bit gloomy. It seems that Nancy has done something wrong."
"That's nonsense! We both know Nancy, Jay. She may be ambitious, but she's a loyal woman. Besides, they have two kids. You are overthinking this, dear. Why don't you go up and take a shower?" Doris had always stuck her neck out for Nancy.
"Okay, dear. I'll be upstairs of you need me." Jay had been preoccupied over Eva for quite some time. For the first time in a long time, the man was able to breathe easy. He did not see the need to worry for Charles.
Jay knew that Charles' marriage was none of his business. There was nothing he could do to help, in all honesty.
Charles found Nancy in Rick's clinic. Rick and Nancy walked side by side, laughing and talking.
Charles clenched his fists as his face turned dark.
The man marched straight towards Nancy and said, "Nancy, you left your mom behind to come here. You didn't even answer my phone calls."
Nancy didn't expect to bump into Charles. Rather awkwardly, she addressed Rick and said, "It was nice seeing you, Rick. Goodbye. Best of luck with your career!
Nancy knew that Charles could take out his frustrations on Rick. She could not allow another physical engagement between those men. Rick would be better off minding his own career.
"Nancy, are you afraid of him?" Rick asked worriedly.
"No, I'm not. I just don't want to argue with him in your place," Nancy said with an awkward smile. "Bye, Rick."
