Chapter 691 Inspection
Charles merely flashed the woman a smile as a reply. He then asked someone to assist Jade in tidying up her hair and taking a shower.
And as she was being assisted, Charles carefully observed the movement of her eyes. When Jade wanted to comb her hair, she couldn't catch sight of the comb even when it was just sitting on the table next to her.
Instead, she kept asking the nurse, "Where is my comb? Did you see it?"
"It's on the table in front of you. Can't you see it?" the nurse replied with a slight hint of curiosity and surprise.
With a sheepish smile, Jade chuckled and replied, "I'm old and have bad eyesight."
"Do you often see things so blurry recently?" This time, Charles couldn't hold back his curiosity anymore and felt the need to ask.
"Old people are prone to diseases. It's normal. You don't have to tell Nancy. I don't want her to worry about me," Jade uttered seriously as she tried to focus her gaze on Charles.
"Auntie, I won't tell Nancy. But you have to cooperate with me in getting your eyes examined today. We need to know if there's something wrong with your sight, so we can have your eyes treated as soon as possible." After saying that, Charles asked the nurse to settle Jade in her wheelchair and assist her out of the ward.
"No, I'm fine, Charles. I don't need to be checked. My eyes are fine, and besides, I have a nurse accompanying me every day," Jade insisted, fearing that she would cause more trouble and hassle to others. More than that, she was delighted living in the sanatorium. Foods and drinks were free, and the nurse, who assisted her, was very helpful and understanding.
She knew that somehow, she was already a burden. And Jade didn't want to add more to that by having her eyes checked.
However, stubborn as he was, Charles didn't listen and insisted on accompanying her to the sanatorium's physical examination department.
Once there, he asked an ophthalmologist to check Jade's eyes.
"She has a cataract, so her vision has deteriorated. Fortunately, it's not yet severe, and she has a great chance of recovery after an operation. There's no need to worry, Mr. Fu," the doctor explained, after going through the diagnostic result.
"When can you recommend to have the operation?" Charles asked again, eyeing the doctor expectantly.
"I'd say the sooner, the better. Otherwise, when the condition worsens, the surgery might pose a greater risk. I suggest that we perform the surgery tomorrow. We can finish all the needed tests today. And if everything goes well, I can arrange the operation tomorrow."
"I'm fine. I don't need the surgery," Jade still insisted, tightly grabbing the armrest of her wheelchair as embarrassment surged in her.
She had bothered Charles enough, and this operation would definitely add trouble for him.
"Jade, please don't say that. You should be glad that you have a good daughter and son-in-law," the doctor advised with a smile, obviously trying to reassure the old woman.
"Doctor, please don't say that. Charles and Nancy haven't married yet," Jade uttered with a hint of shyness. Then, she turned around to face Charles and asked, "When are you planning to marry my daughter anyway? I've been thinking about this every day. You already have two children, and you both love each other. What's stopping you two from getting married?"
It clearly appeared that Jade had no idea what was going on between Charles and Nancy. She had a mobile phone, but it was only for simple communication such as calling and texting. So, all kinds of gossip on the internet that involved Charles and Nancy were unavailable to her.
Of course, Charles and Nancy did it on purpose. Otherwise, Jade would just worry when she learned about all the ruckus surrounding their relationship. It might even worsen her ailing condition. "Aunt, don't worry. After the household register of Ning family is settled, I will marry Nancy."
"What's wrong with the Ning family's household register?" Jade asked nervously, furrowing her brows tightly.
Although she had severed ties with the Ning family, Clark still occupied a space in her heart. After all, the two had lived together for so many years, and she just couldn't forget about that easily. How could Clark lose the household register? Was it because that ingrate woman Jill pulled a trick, afraid that Nancy would marry Charles?
Jade didn't like Jill at all. If that woman didn't steal Clark from her 20 years ago, Jade would have lived a happy life with him and Nancy.
She was in this miserable state because of that devious woman.
"They just lost it. It's not difficult to apply for a new household register anyway. It just takes some time." Charles didn't want Jade to know that he and Nancy had it rough recently. If the old woman knew about their fight, it would only make her worry even more.
"Charles, you have to tell Nancy that she must be careful around Jill and Fannie. The two women are the most devious of human beings. They don't want my daughter to have a happy life she deserved." With utmost anguish, Jade grabbed his arms with her trembling hands.
"I know, auntie. Don't worry about anything now. I'll take care of Nancy and the children. All you need to do is to take good care of your eyes." Charles gently rubbed her hands and comforted her.
"I know you are a good person. I'm sorry to have caused you trouble," Jade said apologetically, lowering her head slightly to avoid his gaze.
Unbothered, Charles just merely smiled at her. Then, he accompanied her to conduct all the needed examination for the operation.
Luckily, all her physical indexes met the requirements for surgery.
So, without wasting any more time, Charles discussed whatever was needed for the operation with the doctor.
Before he left, Jade repeatedly reminded him not to tell Nancy. She was afraid that her daughter would be distracted at work, and that would be another burden.
Charles nodded in agreement, thinking that there was indeed no need to tell Nancy unless she asked about it. After all, cataract was not a severe disease.
Unexpectedly, when he called Nancy, her phone was turned off.
With a heavy sigh, he gazed up at the dark sky, thinking that the children must have been picked up by Nancy or Hiram at this time.
However, what Charles didn't expect was to come home to an empty, silent house.
The servants had already returned to their own rooms, and the windows gave out lonely light.
It was dark and quiet, which meant that neither Nancy nor the children had come back.
Where did they go?
Charles asked the servants to confirm his intuitions. He called Hiram again, but his assistant hadn't seen Nancy all day.
Backed with no choice, Charles drove around, frantically searching for Nancy and the kids. Children liked to go to the supermarket, the nearby amusement park, and the western restaurant.
But knowing that Nancy disliked western restaurants, he instead drove to the amusement park and supermarket first only to find no sight of them.
When he was about to give up, he suddenly saw Nancy's car parked in front of a western restaurant from a distance.
The next second, Nancy and the kids happily walked out of the restaurant.
With hands clasped together, the three laughed heartily, without him.
It turned out that Charles was the only one who was worried, lonely, and anxious to look for them.
That was why he felt wronged and shouted at Nancy the moment he was face to face with her.
Meanwhile, Nancy was also aware that she had wronged Charles, but she was embarrassed to apologize in front of the children.
So, instead, she said, "Okay, I'll cook for you when we get home." "You're not apologizing to me?" Charles asked.
"Why would I? I didn't do anything wrong. They said that Director Brandy dressed up well this afternoon as if she was on a date. They also said that the date was you. I just heard what they were saying." Nancy tried to defend herself in a low voice, worried that she would sound jealous.
