Chapter 21: Just Wanna Boss Her Around!
Eliot can't agree more, "Good idea! Mr. Penn, our company need neither idlers nor eye candy. If she is able to assist you in getting the South Sea Project, nobody will have an issue with her; otherwise, it proves that she isn't cut out for the job at all!"
In fact, the key to business success is negotiation, which depends not only on the negotiators, but also on their assistants. However, considering that the project of the development of the land by the South Sea is a hot potato, it is really hard for a trainee secretary to help complete this task.
The reason why Eliot said that is that he wanted Macy Downey to beat a treat and then leave the Penn's immediately. Of course, Yusef Penn knows it inside out.
Without saying a word, he turns his head towards Macy.
Macy notices Yusef's gaze, stands up right away, and bows to everyone in the room respectfully, "If Mr. Penn agrees, I'll be willing to assist him in getting this project, and thank you all for giving me this opportunity to prove myself."
Eliot asks with a sneer, "What if the project fails because of your mistake?"
Macy grits her teeth, "I am willing to take full responsibility."
She knows very well that Eliot was deliberately embarrassing her, but what he said was reasonable. Given that so many C-level executives are listening to their conversation now, if she does not agree, it will show that she is indeed eye candy. She has no choice.
"Cool!" Eliot straightens up, "Everyone heard that, Macy just declared if she didn't get this project, she would take full responsibility!"
Remaining silent, people sneak a peek at Yusef, who says nothing either. They finally relax a little bit.
It is just a small episode before the meeting officially begins. Soon, Yusef has others reporting on the details of the project.
About an hour later, the South Sea Project is handed over at the end of the meeting. Macy follows Yusef out of the conference room with a pile of papers about the project.
Distant footsteps coming, it's Eliot that walks towards Macy; he glances at her, and puts a set of documents on the top of the papers in her arms.
"Send them to the archive room."
He says, and then walks forward.
Quickly taking a look at the documents in Macy's arms, Yusef looks upwards to him, "Wait!"
Eliot stops, turns over and then looks at Yusef, "What's wrong, Mr. Penn?"
"Are you paralyzed?" Yusef's face clouds over now.
Eliot answers in exasperation as well, "Isn't she a secretary? Why can't I ask her to send a document?"
"She's my secretary. Please stay out of my business." Yusef walks towards Eliot, directly standing in front of him. In face of his towering older brother, Eliot feels a tremendous amount of pressure sharply. "I just wanna boss her around!"
Taking those documents out of Macy's arms, Yusef throws them to Eliot, "You know what? If you don't need your secretary, Im willing to help you give her the sack. By the way, please send these documents to the archive room within ten minutes, or you would be disciplined as you divulge the confidential information about our company."
"Yusef!"
Speechless as Eliot is, he grits the teeth.
Yusef doesn't want to waste time on him anymore. He looks away quickly and said, "Let's go."
Following him in a hurry, Macy even doesn't get it at the moment.
Eliot stares at them from behind with the clenched fists.
Macy sends the documents to the Director's Office. Looking at the man who just sits down and begins to work, she hesitates for a moment, "Mr. Penn, thank you for what happened just now." Yusef looks upwards to her as the corners of his mouth curve up, "You are welcome, but I fail to feel your sincerity at all. Remember, action always speaks louder than words."
"Eh?" Macy is a little bit confused. Upon noticing his meaningful smile, she suddenly gets his points.
That's what he meant!
At once Macy changed the topic to hide her blushes, "I think it's time for me to sort out these documents and draft an abstract for the conference."
She walked out of the office without thinking twice.
Admittedly, Yusef is really a complex man. He had a gloomy face just now but could say such things in the next second.
Macy flushes to the ears. As soon as she steps into her office, the cell phone rings.
"Mom? What's going on?"
Macy remembers that she did leave a note to tell her mother that she has gone to work, so there must be something wrong since her mother never disturb her during office hours. "Macy, are you working at the Penn's?"
"Yes, I told you that yesterday."
Macy's mother said hesitantly, "Macy, I'm waiting downstairs now. Could you come here and give me some money?"
"Mom? What happened to you?" Macy freezes for a moment. "What do you need money for?"
Though currently her family is poor owing to the bankruptcy, she still left her mother hundreds of dollars few days ago, which is definitely enough for recent living expenses.
"I just played a few rounds of mahjong with your aunt. I intended to have earned some extra cash, but I have no such luck!"
Macy frowns.
Before the bankruptcy of the Downey's, Macy's mother was so bored that she always drank tea and chatted with her friends, and they also played mahjong together from time to time. Since they were rich at that time, it didn't matter whether she won or lost, but now they are literally in a different life, where there is no money for her playing mahjong.
"Mom, you know very well what's going on in our family, right? How can you still play mahjong?" Macy scratches her head.
"Oh dear, of course. That's because I realize you've been pushing yourself too hard these days. I want to earn some money for this family as well, and then you don't have to be so tired!"
Macy's heart melts a little, "Mom, I appreciate your help, but playing mahjong is just like gambling..."
"I know, I know! Just now I ran out of money as soon as I felt lucky. Please give me a few hundred dollars. I promise I will go home after two more rounds."
Macy is all set to refuse, but she suddenly realizes in the current situation, her mother is really lonely.
With a sigh, Macy raises her voice and says firmly, "Mom, this is the last time."
"Absolutely!"
Macy hangs up the phone wearily, takes the money out of the bag and leaves the office.
Before the Downey's bankruptcy, she didn't care about the money at all, but now, everything has changed, and hundreds of dollars is almost half a month of her living expenses. As she walks to the elevator door, she hears someone calling her name.
"Macy, where are you going?"IIIIII
