Stone (Highway Jokers #1)

Chapter 7

CHAPTER 7

LOLITA

As the guys sat at the table in church with the doors shut, I remained out by the bar with the prospects pacing up and down, biting my thumbnail. I was worried sick, my heart was pumping so fast. I needed to know that Daniel was okay… where was he? Did the guys find him? Was he at the hospital? Was he even alive?

When the doors to the chapel opened, my head snapped up to see John and the rest of the guys walkout. I rushed over to John. “Is he okay?” I asked him as he grabbed onto my arms to steady me.

“They have taken him to the hospital.” He told me. “Some of us are going down to Dunsborough to check it out.”

“I’m going with”

“No! Thrasher wants you to stay here. We can’t risk you getting hurt.” I pulled myself away from my step-brother and took a step back. Shaking my head I looked towards the president of the Highway Jokers. I straightened my back and held my head high.

“You can do whatever you can to stop me but I will be going to Dunsborough. Whether any of you like it or not.” I glared at Thrasher when he took a step towards me.

“You love him?” He asked me.

“I do.” My hands were in fists by my sides.

“You’ll do anything for him?” He asked when he was standing in front of me, making me glare up at him.

“Yes.”

“I’m not playing little girl. This is my club and he is my VP.” Thrasher growled out. “I will not let a girl like you play games here.”

“I’m not playing games pres. Which hospital is he at?” I asked as I glared at Thrasher.

“Busselton Health Campus,” 8Ball said to me. I nodded my head and turned to leave until John spoke up.

“It’s pouring rain, Lolita! You’re going to get caught in the storm!”

“I don’t care! I’m going to see him!” I yelled back before I was walking out in the pouring rain towards my car.

Rushing through the rain, I finally made it to Busselton. Even though the roads were hard to see, I made it. I pulled my wet hair into a ponytail as I walked through the doors of the Emergency Room.

The place was packed with people waiting to be seen or people waiting to see family members. “Hi, can I help you, miss?” A nurse asked me. She had dark circles around her eyes like she was running with barely any energy but I heard my name being called from behind me. Looking over my shoulder I saw Redback walking over to me. I excuse myself, letting her see another patient.

“Any news?” I asked him immediately when I met him halfway.

“He’s stable. That’s all we know. He’s in surgery.” Redback said.

I sighed and looked away from the man standing in front of me. Tears fell from my eyes. All through the drive, I tried my hardest to keep myself from crying but now that I was here, I couldn’t help myself. Redback placed his hand on my back and guided me towards the others, where Gravel and Skitzo were sitting.

Hours past and before I knew it, I was watching the sky become lighter. “Family of Daniel Moss?” I heard someone say, I quickly stood from my chair and made my way over to the lady. Redback and Gravel stood behind me. The doctor frowned slightly before she spoke. “He was shot four times, two in his left arm, one close to his heart and another in his thigh. He is a very lucky man. If the one close to his heart was 2cm over, he would have been dead.”

“When can we see him?” I asked her but she glared slightly.

“Family only ma’am.”

“I’m his wife,”

“I don’t see a ring.” She nodded to me.

“My fingers are too fat for my ring since I’m pregnant,” I told her, she looked at me hesitantly but nodded her head.

“I will take you to his room,” she mumbled before turning around to go back through the door.

“I’ll text you the room number,” I told Redback and Gravel before I followed the doctor through the halls of the hospital.

“Poet,” I felt something shake me.

“Poet” My eyes snapped open when I heard his voice. I must’ve fallen asleep because the room that Daniel was in was lit up by the sun shining through the window.

“Don’t cry, Poet.” I wiped my tears away when I saw Daniel staring back at me. I kissed the back of Daniel’s hand before I told him I’d get the doctor.

Once the nurse and doctor came into the room, I remained out of their way so they could check him over. I remained quiet as I nibbled on my thumbnail. When they were finished, Daniel looked towards me. “Why are you over there?” He asked me.

I pushed off the wall and sat in the chair I was sitting in before I woke up. “You scared me last night…” I said to him, “I...I didn’t know…” I started sobbing. I couldn’t hold back my emotions at this point no matter how hard I tried. No matter how strong I tried to be for him.

“Hey, look at me. Poet, look at me.” I shook my head once, wiping away more sobs before looking at him.

“I’m here okay? I’m here. It’s ok. “ he told me as he held my face in his hand.

“But what if this happens again… The doctor said if the bullet was 2 cm over. You wouldn’t be here…”

“I’m here now baby,” he stroked my cheek, wiping my fallen tears away. After sitting with Daniel for another 10 minutes, the door to his room opened up. Thrasher, Gravel and Mase came walking through the door. “Poet, can you give us a few minutes?” Daniel squeezed my hand. I nodded my head and kissed him before I left the room, closing the door behind me.

STONE’S POV

I watched Lolita leave the room and close the door behind her. I slightly move my body but groan at the pain that shoots through my body. “You have one tough girl, man,” Gravel said as he took a seat on one of the chairs. “The doctor wouldn’t let any of us see you, so Lolita told the doctor she was your pregnant wife.” I raised my eyebrow at him.

“What happened out there?” I turned to face Thrasher.

“We had everything done, so we were at the motel. I was on the phone with Lolita when I heard a car pull up. Looked over it but didn’t think about it. I didn’t have time to react to anything because it was out of the blue. Shot me four times.” I told them.

“We’re going into a lockdown,” Thrasher said, I nodded my head. “This has gone on too far. We act now. I need this situation dead.” He growled out.

“They are going to want to keep Stone here for at least a week,” Mase said to Thrasher. Thrasher leaned on the end of the bed rails, thinking about something.

“Just give me a few days, I’ll be up and walking around,” I said to pres. His eyes met mine before he sighed and nodded his head.

“By the end of the week, this shit stops, now. I’m going to give 8ball a call to gather as much information as possible.” Thrasher said before standing up straight. He opened the door and walked out of the room. I looked through the blinds of the window to my room. I saw that Thrasher had stopped in front of Lolita when she stood up from a chair. They spoke for a few moments before she nodded her head and walked into the room.

“Poet, I want you to head back to Bunbury with Mase.” I groaned slightly when I moved again.

“What? No, I’m not going anywhere,” she said, shaking her head.

I sighed “It’s not safe here. I want you at the clubhouse protected”

“No.”

“Lolita! I’m your old man, you want to be with me then fine but in this world that I live in, the Old Lady does what she is told and I’m telling you to do something.” I said to her, she stared at me for a moment before sighing. Lolita nodded her head, she leaned over and kissed me before walking out of the room. I nodded my head to Mase, who nodded back and left me and Gravel alone in the room.
