Chapter 30
Walt put a cup of coffee on the table in front of Freddy and gave him a concentrated look. He handed another to Andrea who was sitting across the table from him in the interrogation room, then left. Frank stood rigidly to attention by the door, Andrea’s insurance policy in case Freddy should turn nasty.
Freddy gratefully took a sip of the hot liquid. He’d been answering questions for hours and was in need of a break.
She’d decided to question him and take his statement instead of leaving it to one of her detectives. The case was too important to let anyone else handle it.
His plan had worked. He’d made a deal with the new chief. He’d agreed to turn himself in and confess to being Leon and raping and murdering all the girls if they released Steele. She’d been reluctant but had agreed. He thought she’d have gone back on her word and just arrested him when he walked into the station, but she kept her promise and agreed to take Steele back to his place before she woke. He didn’t want Steele knowing what he’d done.
If his plan didn’t work he was looking at the death penalty.
