Chapter 8: Second Trail The Great Dragon Graveyard
Several months had passed since Ellyn, Gawain, Leon, and Ulrich had made it out of East Haven with their skins intact. Even though so much time had passed they couldn’t help but feel like they could have done more, but if Asher hadn’t forced them to leave when he did then they to would have shared in his fate.
“I still can’t help but feel like we left Asher to die.” Ellyn frowned, there was still a hint of sadness to her voice when she talked about that night.
“We did what Asher asked of us, Miss Ellyn.” Gawain replied. “All we can do is move forward.”
“Asher was a tough man, I’m sure he’s fine.” Leon smiled, but something in the pit of his stomach told him otherwise.
“You’re right, Leon.” Gawain agreed. “I’m sure Asher is still among the living.” but in the back of his mind like Leon, he knew that Asher had given his life to save them.
Ulrich could see the pain in Ellyn’s eyes, if anything pulled at what heart he had left, it was seeing her sad. “Asher seemed like a skilled warrior.” Ulrich smiled warmly as he knew how. “He’s the King Of Thieves for a reason.”
“Thank you guys.” Ellyn smiled brightly. She looked at Gawain seeming back to her bubbly self, “Where are we going next?” it was to painful for her to keep talking about Asher, even though he was a thieve, his kindness touched her heart.
“We’re going to the Dragon Graveyard.” you could almost hear the fear in Gawain’s voice. “I’ve never heard of such a place before.” Ellyn replied.
“From what I understand, the Dragons were used in the Great War. When the war ended, the Dragons injured went to a specific place to die, thus becoming the Dragon Graveyard.” Ulrich explained.
“Wow, you have a vast amount of knowledge stored away in that brain of yours.” Ellyn complemented.
“Know you surroundings first and foremost.” Ulrich smugly replied.
“Then why are we heading there of all places, Ulrich?” Gawain interrupted. “Seeing how you know all, this should be an easy question to answer.
“How should I know?” Ulrich hissed.
Gawain chuckled, “We’re going after another piece of the legendary blade.” he seemed to tremble when he talked of the graveyard.
“You don’t seem to happy about going there, Master Gawain.” Leon butted in. “I’m not happy about it at all.” Gawain replied.
“The old man is scared.” Ulrich laughed. “Does the big bad Dragon Graveyard make you shake in your armor.”
Gawain had gotten angry and pulled back the reins of his horse to make it stop trotting, “Everyone stop for a moment.” he demanded. “The Dragon Graveyard is no joke, just like the Cave Of Sorrow there are many dangers we will face. This isn’t going to be fun or easy, Mages live in that graveyard, and they practice the Dark Arts. I don’t know if we are ready to face such foes but we have no choice if we want to retrieve what we seek.” Ulrich began laughing hysterically, “Do you find something funny?”
“I find it funny that you’re scared of Mages.” Ulrich kept laughing.
“Mages that practice the Dark Arts are dangerous.” Gawain scowled.
“Let me handle the Mages when we get there, it is clear that you are to scared to make a sound judgment.” Ulrich smirked, like he had something planed.
“What makes you think that you can handle such men?” Gawain grumbled. Ulrich’s smile stretched across his face, “Because I know what to say to them.”
“What words could you possibly have to say to such evil men?” Gawain questioned.
“That doesn’t involve you, that’s between me, them, and Headmaster Caine.” Ulrich answered.
Gawain wasn’t exactly sure how to respond, “Caine?” he hesitantly replied. Why would Ulrich have words for the Mages from Caine? It didn’t make any sense to Gawain, he thought for sure that his students were staying away from Caine like he had asked of them. But it seemed as though Ulrich has been disobeying his orders. That must mean that Ulrich is being trained by Caine in secret. Which would explain how he can use the Dark Arts to his advantage. All these thoughts swirled around inside of Gawain’s head and more, but now wasn’t the time for action, he had a feeling that he would find the answers he sought soon enough.
“I told you that I don’t have to explain myself.” Ulrich grumbled.
“If that’s the way you feel, then fine by me.” Gawain responded. “For now we set our sights on the Dragon Graveyard.”
Gawain not feeding into Ulrich’s ego upset him severely, “What, you’re not going to question me old man?” he asked with a hint of sarcasm.
“Why should I?” Gawain asked before pulling the reins to turn his horse in the direction he desired. “Lets ride.” he kicked the sides of his horse to spur it on.
“Wait. You’re telling me that you’re not curious in the least?” Ulrich asked. Gawain didn’t look back, he was disappointed and a little heartbroken, his spirit had been slightly broken as well.
Nevertheless he had to focus on collecting the pieces of the blade, and keep Leon safe from harm, for his destiny was not yet complete. “Nothing? Not a word from you either Leon? Ellyn?” he shouted as they all rode ahead of him.
Hours of riding through some of the toughest terrain imaginable they were finally closing in on their destination, the Dragon Graveyard. And just up ahead and another piece of the legendary blade was within their grasp. Gawain pulled the reins of his horse, “The Dragon Graveyard is just up ahead.” Gawain lifted his hand signaling for the others to stop.
“Why are we stopping?” Leon asked. “Shouldn’t we press on and get this over with?” “This is where we will setup camp for the night.” Gawain answered.
Leon huffed, “What we seek is just ahead of us, why setup camp now of all times?”
“That proves your immaturity to ask such a question.” Gawain laughed and dismounted from his horse. “We’ve been riding for hours. The horses need to rest as do we, if all is not fresh when entering such a dangerous place, we will surely fall in battle.”
“Understood.” Leon nodded, jumping off the back of his horse. “What of firewood?”
“Do not worry yourself over firewood.” Gawain smiled. “I shall go and collect the wood this time while the three of you setup camp.”
“Are you sure, sir?” Ellyn asked with a huge smile on her face. “We can easily go instead.” “No, that is not necessary.” Gawain replied. “I shall retrieve the firewood. Please setup camp
while I’m gone.” he turned and walked off alone.
Ulrich dismounted from his horse, “He’s up to something.” he was suspicious of how quickly Gawain went off by himself.
“What makes you say such a thing?” Leon asked.
“Think about it.” Ulrich said. “When does Gawain ever go and gather anything for camp?” Leon thought about it for a moment, “Never.” he shrugged. Ellyn was already off her horse
going after Gawain, “Where are you going?” Leon turned and asked.
“While the two of you stand around trying to figure out what he’s up to, I’m going to follow him and see for myself.” she answered and kept walking on.
“Then wait for us.” both Leon and Ulrich said, following behind her.
“There he is.” Ellyn whispered. “Hurry lets hide before he sees us.” they ducked out of sight behind one of the trees. “What do you think he’s doing?”
“He’s waiting for someone.” Ulrich whispered. “How do you know that?” Ellyn questioned him. “Yeah, how do you know that?” Leon interrupted.
Ulrich turned to look at the both of them, “Wait and see for yourselves.”
Moments later a strange woman appeared from the shadows, “Right on time.” Ulrich said. “Who is that?” Leon whispered.
“I don’t know.” Ulrich responded. “I’ve only seen her talking to the old man once, several months ago.”
“And you did not think to tell me of this?” Leon’s brow furrowed.
“It was not of importance.” Ulrich shrugged. “But something is different this time.” “Would you to be quiet.” Ellyn hissed. “I can hardly hear what they speak about.”
The strange woman talking with Gawain suddenly turned in their direction, “Come out from behind the tree, there is no need to hide.”
“How did she know that we were here?” Ellyn looked surprised.
“This is not the same lady I remember from before, be on guard.” Ulrich warned.
“I said come out from behind the tree, or I shall come back there after you.” she shouted again. And with that Ellyn, Leon, and Ulrich slowly made their way out into the open. “Now come over here and stand by Master Gawain.” and so they did.
Gawain shook his head and sighed, “Can I not leave the three of you alone for one bloody minute?”
“It’s okay.” the lady said. “They are just as much a part of this as you, Master Gawain.” “How do you figure? What we talk about is of no concern to them.” Gawain scowled.
“Calm yourself, Gawain.” she demanded. “Or have you forgotten what I can do if I so choose?” “My apologies, please forgive my rashness.” Gawain bowed.
“Someone finally put the old man in his place.” Ulrich laughed.
“Silence, I need no response from someone who constantly acts like a child, you still have a lot of growing up to do.” she scolded.
“She just put you in your place as well.” Ellyn giggled. “That is enough.” Gawain demanded.
“Sorry.” both Ellyn and Ulrich responded at the same time.
“My apologies.” Gawain smiled hesitantly. “As you can tell my students are still very young.”
The lady smiled faintly, “They are more than just your students, Master Gawain. These children are becoming young adults, even though they still have a lot of growing up to do, they are still warriors. Not only that they are your companions, be mindful to treat them as so.”
“Understood, Lady Elena.” Gawain said. “However, I’m curious on why you humble us with your presence.”
“Headmaster Caine caught wind of the fact that you had gathered two pieces of the legendary blade.” Lady Elena answered.
“He sent you here to retrieve the pieces did he?” Gawain muttered.
“It twas not Caine that sent me, but Lord Alistair himself.” Elena answered. “Do you know why they both seek the pieces of the Legendary Blade with such passion?”
“I do not.” Gawain answered. “However, I was hoping you could shed some light on that
subject.”
“If I knew, I wouldn’t be asking you.” Elena responded coldly. “They cannot be up to anything good.” Gawain eerily replied. “Seems that way.” she agreed.
“And yet you still do their dirty work.” Gawain responded out of anger.
“What about you?” she hissed. “Do you not seek out the pieces of the legendary blade for them? Do you not aid them regardless of how you feel? It would seem you do more of their dirty work then I, and you do so without question.”
Gawain lowered his head, “I do not know what else to do.” he muttered. “If we do not do as they say we could be exiled for treason, I cannot allow such a fate to befall my students.”
“Then give me the pieces that you have collected thus far, so I can take them back to Lord Alistair.” Lady Elena took Gawain’s hand in hers. “Tis the only way, you know it to be true.”
“I know.” Gawain sighed. He removed his hand from hers, reaching into the bag that he had strapped to his waist. Gawain removed what looked liked something wrapped in cloth and held it out in front of him. “Take it, and be on your way.”
Lady Elena reached out, taking the cloth from Gawain’s hand, “Thank you, Gawain.” she opened the cloth to see the contents inside, to her elation she was actually holding two pieces of the legendary blade. The hilt and part of the blade itself, “It’s hard to believe that I hold such power in the palm of my hands.”
“Promise me that you will protect that which I have given you.” Gawain pleaded.
“I promise.” Elena smiled. “I must get back, Lord Alistair is waiting. Take care, Gawain.” she smiled happily, then turned to walk away.
“You cannot trust her.” a voice whispered.
“You can come out now, Shadow.” Gawain said. “I know that it is you.”
Another lady stepped out from the shadows, but none could see her face, for she had it covered with a hood. “That’s the lady I was telling you about, not the other.” Ulrich whispered.
The hooded lady known as Shadow turned to look at Ulrich, “Mind your own, young master Ulrich.” then she turned her attention back to Gawain. “As I was saying, you can’t trust Lady Elena.”
“Don’t be silly.” Gawain laughed. “I’ve known Lady Elena since childhood, on top of that she’s higher up in the church. We can trust her, I’m sure of it.”
“It’s the ones that we think we can trust that knows how to manipulate us best. You of all people know this.” Shadow warned.
“That’s enough about Lady Elena, I will here no more of it Shadow.” Gawain demanded of her. “As you wish.” she bowed.
“What have you learned of the Dragon Graveyard?” Gawain asked, back to business as usual. “It’s just as you suspected, there are powerful Mages that have setup camp there, keeping all
from entering.” Shadow replied. “They are not the type to be trifled with either.”
“Like I was telling the old man here, I will handle the Mages.” Ulrich butted in.
Shadow turned her head ever so slightly, “What shall a child such as yourself do with such a powerful enemy? Do tell.”
“How do you know of me?” Ulrich asked, instantly ignoring the question at hand.
“I know all about you, Ulrich.” she answered. “Tis my job, I’m the Academy’s top Scout.” what she failed to say is that she was actually the Academy’s Assassin. “Now Ulrich, answer my question in return.”
Ulrich smiled arrogantly, “I will tell you the same thing I told the old man, that is between Headmaster Caine and myself.”
“I see that I’m not the only one that keeps secrets.” Shadow said. “Know this, Ulrich. The Mages won’t take kindly to you or your friends, what you speak to them better be worth while.”
“Who needs words when you can just fight your way through.” Leon interrupted.
“There is no way that you could fight against Mages that use the Dark Arts, Leon.” Shadow responded.
“You know of me as well?” Leon asked with a confused look on his face. “I know more about you than you know of yourself, Leon.” she replied. “What about, Ellyn? Do you know anything about her?” Leon questioned. “Don’t ask such questions.” Ellyn hissed at him.
“It’s okay, child.” Shadow said. “Your secrets are your own, with time I’m sure you will tell them about your past.”
“So you know of my past?” Ellyn frowned.
“I do.” Shadow replied. “However, that’s not for me to discuss.” “Thank you.” Ellyn smiled slightly.
Shadow nodded and then turned her attention back to Gawain, “Master Gawain, here is my last bit of information for you. Just up ahead there is cave, that is where the Mages quarters are. If you make it through with your lives, the Dragon Graveyard shall be on the other side. Until we meet again.” and with a cloud of smoke she vanished into thin air.
“Where did she go?” Leon asked, looking the area over.
“Shadow is already far away from here.” Gawain said. “Lets get back and setup camp, we need to rest before the morrow.”
Ellyn waited to see if any would ask about her past, to her relief they smiled and hurried along back to where they left the horses so they could get themselves settled in for the night. Morning came quicker than expected, and this time around Ellyn, Leon, and Ulrich was up and ready to head out before Gawain could even fully wake. “Hurry up, old man. Time is a wasting.” Ulrich started the joke.
“Hurry up, sir. For we are on our horses and ready to head out.” Ellyn also joked. “You are only
slowing us down.”
“Grab your food! Move! Move!” Leon couldn’t help but to join in on the fun.
“What?” Gawain muttered, wiping the sleep from his eyes. “Is there something the matter?” “Of course. You’re holding us up.” Ulrich shouted.
Gawain stumbled around grabbing for his things, placing them back into his saddle bag, then he stumbled back over to the fire that was already put out, to grab what was left of the rabbit that was killed and cooked earlier that morning. “I’m hurrying, leave me alone.” he grumbled after taking a bite from his food. The youngsters laughed at Gawain as he stumbled around eating his breakfast, he tried to even mount his horse but fell off the other side. “Damn horse, stay still.” he spate, only to have his companions laugh even louder at his actions. Little did they know that Gawain was putting on an act just for them, to calm their nerves and make them laugh together before they made their way to the Dragon Graveyard.
Gawain held up his hand motioning for his companions to stop, “We’re here.” he whispered. “What shall be our plan of action?” Leon quietly asked.
“We sneak inside.” Gawain replied.
Just then Ulrich shouted out, “Show yourselves at once, I know that Mages dwell here.” four Mages wearing black robes came walking out from inside the cave, then three more appeared behind them.
“What have you done, Ulrich?” Gawain said with a look of bewilderment.
“Mind your own, old man.” Ulrich said. “I know what I’m doing., you will just have to trust in my words.” Gawain would soon find out that he would have no choice but to trust that his student could save them from almost a certain death.
“Who dares to make commands in our territory?” one of the Mages angrily hissed.
“We are the ones that Lord Alistair and Headmaster Caine spoke of in the message sent to you
by carrier.” Ulrich explained. “Would you challenge the word of Lord Alistair and have the Knights Of Valor come for you?”
The leader of the Mages pulled the hood from his face, “I do not fear any such man or men of titles.” his face was badly scared, and he was blind in one eye as his pupil was completely white. His head had no hair atop it, and there were foreign symbols branded on his scalp. This was clearly a man to be feared by all who would dare defy him. “Also, I do not believe you to be the ones Caine spoke of in his letter that found its way to us.”
Ulrich pointed at the man, demanding that he call Caine Headmaster out of respect. The Mage laughed at the boys insolence, “If you talk down to me again, boy. You will be the first to die.” he never made a threat he did not keep. The Mage raised his hand in the air and it started to glow red from the flames of fire. However something caught his eye that made him rethink burning the foul mouthed boy into dust.
“Did you finally come to your senses?” Ulrich laughed.
“No, I’m curious to find out why Caine holds people such as you yourselves in high regards.” he replied, smiling the whole time. “State your business, and I shall decide if I let you leave here alive.”
“We need passage into the Dragon Graveyard.” Gawain said. “Don’t we all.” the man laughed.
“What do you mean?” Gawain asked.
The man turned his back to them, “Follow me.” he walked on ahead inside the cave. While they hesitantly followed the man, the Mages that lived inside of the cave hissed their disapproval at the sight of the non magic users being let into their domain. “Quiet.” he commanded. “None shall harm these people. If you do not heed my words then punishment shall be swift, and without mercy. Go. Return to your duties.”
“That was some welcome.” Gawain joked.
“I apologize, my men are not use to strangers.” the man smirked. “Make sure you keep up, I wouldn’t want anything to happen to such brave souls like yourselves.”
“Your words are soothing.” Gawain mocked. “Tell me Mage, where do you lead us?”
“You shall see soon enough, non magic user.” he answered. They came to a part of the cave where the walls narrowed, and to the right of them was a drop off that went down towards the depth of hell, maybe even further. “Watch your step, and keep close to each other.” the light flickered from the torch that the man carried to light the way, their shadows danced off the wall, except for one. That shadow seemed to stay off at a distance, which meant they were being followed. However Gawain thought it be best to keep that to himself for the time being.
“Tell me something.” Gawain said, staying as close to the wall as possible while walking down the narrow path. “Why do you call us non magic users?”
Once they made it through the dangerous path safely, the leader of the Mages answered Gawain’s question. “You are not Mages, therefore to us you are non magic users.” he didn’t even to turn to face Gawain as he spoke, instead he walked on without hesitation.
“But we know how to use magic.” Gawain replied as he kept pace with the man. The Mage didn’t even bother to acknowledge Gawain’s words, in his mind they were non magic users and that was all there was to it. They walked for what seemed like another good hour, up and down different paths, each as dangerous as the next. Until finally the man stopped abruptly, “Why have we stopped?” Gawain questioned.
“Because we are here.” when the man smiled the flames from the torch made him almost look like a demon in human flesh, which was said about all Mages. But it was the first time that Gawain had witnessed it first hand. The Mage noticed Gawain glaring at him ever so slightly, “Is something the matter?” he laughed.
“No.” Gawain cleared his throat, “Where is here?”
“This is the end.” the man mysteriously said.
“The end?” Gawain questioned, he was for sure the Mage was up to something.
“This is the end of the cave.” the man laughed, he took great pleasure in making others nervous. “Why didn’t you just say so?” Gawain grumbled, he found himself annoyed by the man’s
arrogance.
“I wouldn’t want to miss out on seeing the fear in your eyes.” he smirked.
“Believe me when I say, that I do not fear the likes of you.” Gawain boldly replied.
The man looked back at Gawain with that evil smile of his, “The Dragon Graveyard is just beyond here, but we find ourselves blocked by this great steel door.” he said, ignoring Gawain’s words yet again, which seemed like something he enjoyed doing.
“So the great and powerful Mages couldn’t even get past, eh.” Gawain mocked. “Unfortunately not.” the man grumbled. “I’m starting to second guess letting the four of you
live.”
“Forgive my head strong companion, for he is just an old grumpy man.” Ulrich interrupted. “What are you doing, Ulrich?” Gawain angrily asked. “I have yet to give you permission to
speak.”
“I’m saving our asses, old man. And I don’t need your permission to speak.” Ulrich answered. He then proceeded to walk up to the leader of the Mages, “Also, forgive me for my boldness earlier. I meant no harm in my jests.” he humbly bowed.
“Hmm.” the man rubbed his chin between his thumb and first finger. “Thee definitely have a silver tongue. For now I shall stick to my decision, and let you and your companions live for a while longer.”
“Thank thee.” Ulrich humbly bowed again. “Would you now humble us by explaining why no one can get past that steel door?”
The man walked up to the huge silver door that towered before them, and placed his right hand on it. “See these symbols?” he asked. “Tis the secret to opening the door, but none knows of this language. Not even the most powerful of magic can break past either, we need someone that can translate these symbols, so that we may get past.”
Ulrich walked up to the door starring at the symbols that had been placed there, “These are hieroglyphics.” he muttered. “Words of the Ancients have been carved into this door.”
“Impressive.” the man smiled. “You’re smarter than I thought, true these be what you say, but still we have found none that can read them.”
Ulrich looked back at Master Gawain, “The old man there can read them.” he pointed.
The Mage looked back at Gawain, “Is what the young one here says be true?” he asked. “Can you truly read this?”
“Tis true.” Gawain nodded. “I can read them if you like, but I doubt it will be of any use to you and your men.”
“And why is that?” the man asked.
Gawain walked up to the man and got him to look at a specific symbol carved into the door, “See this here.” he pointed. “This symbol means, “one of chosen blood.””
The Mage looked over the door curiously, “What does the rest mean?”
Gawain proceeded to read the symbols for the man, “Only the one with the chosen bloodline my open this door. He who accomplishes the trials inside my retrieve the treasure hidden within.” he stared at the symbols for a few more minutes. “The rest cannot be read, the markings have worn over the years.”
“That’s a major problem for us.” the man responded. “Which means that I no longer need the four of you alive.”
“Wait.” Ulrich raised his hands. “He’s of chosen blood.” he pointed at Leon.
Leon rushed up to his friend, “What are you talking about?” he grabbed Ulrich by the arm and pulled at him. “I have no special blood in me. Why would you say that?” Ulrich pulled his arm away from Leon and glared at him without speaking. “Tell me.” Leon demanded.
“How about I show you.” Ulrich grabbed Leon’s hand, then he removed a knife from his belt and used it to cut into Leon’s hand. Without hesitation he forced Leon’s bloody hand flat onto the steel door.
“Let me go.” Leon cried out, but Ulrich ignored his pleas and kept Leon’s hand forced flat against the door. To everyone’s shock the door began to tremble, as rocks started to fall from above. “What’s going on?”
“The door is opening.” the Mage said with glee. The steel door started to give way opening the path into the graveyard. “Finally.” his eyes widened with excitement. He turned and yelled for his men to hurry over to him, “Enter the graveyard and find what we seek.” he commanded. The man was smart and refused to enter the hollowed grounds without knowing if it were truly safe.
The leader of the Mages was elated that they had finally gained access to the Dragon Graveyard, while Leon on the other hand was confused and hadn’t come to the realization that his blood truly opened the door. “What happened?” he asked, looking down at his bloody hand. He wasn’t sure which was more shocking, the fact that his blood opened the door, or that his wound was already starting to heal.
“I proved a point, that’s what happened.” Ulrich smirked. Gawain had seen enough, Ulrich’s actions were unacceptable and his punishment had to be enforced. That was his intentions when made his way towards Ulrich. However he wouldn’t get the chance as the Mage stepped in front of him impeding his progress.
“Where do you think you’re going?” the man asked.
Gawain tried to get around him but it was to no avail, the man had cast a barrier spell that
wouldn’t allow him to pass no matter how hard he tried. “What kind of sorcery is this?” he scowled. Gawain wasn’t the only one that was trapped inside a barrier, the man had Ellyn, Leon, and Ulrich trapped as well, all shouting their dis-pleasures.
“Why don’t the four of you pipe down.” the man demanded. “Just sit back, shut up, and enjoy the show.” he turned and waived his men on into the Dragon Graveyard. “Hurry. Go and collect what we have sought for so long.” his men did as they were ordered, without thinking twice they went running out of the cave and into the Dragon Graveyard. But it didn’t go as planned, for as soon as the men entered, they burst into flames all dying a horrible and painful death.
The leader could care less that a few of his men had died, and he showed it by his words. “That was a shame, was it not?” he smirked. “It would seem that the one that opened the door is the only one that may enter the graveyard, or so it would seem.” he looked at Leon and smiled. “I have a deal for you young one.”
“I refuse to help scum such as you.” Leon hissed.
“Oh, but you will or your friends shall die.” the man laughed. “It is up to you. If you do as I ask they live, don’t, and they will die a slow and painful death. And then I will kill you just for the hell of it. What do you say?”
Leon didn’t have much of a choice but to do as the man asked of him, there was no way that he would allow that man to kill his friends. “If I do as you wish, you will let us go?”
“I shall.” the man answered.
“Then what is it that you seek?” Leon questioned.
“Leon don’t.” Ellyn pleaded. “You’ve seen what happens when you enter the graveyard.” Leon looked at Ellyn and smiled, “Trust me, I know what I am doing.”
The man dispelled the barrier around Leon, “Come, I shall tell you what it is we seek.” the man motioned. Leon walked over to where he stood waiting, “Listen closely.” he said. “There are ancient
scrolls located somewhere inside the graveyard, find them, bring them to me, and you and your friends shall leave here unharmed.”
“That’s all I have to do?” Leon questioned. “That’s all.” the man answered.
“What if I find other relics of power inside the graveyard?” Leon questioned, he was afraid the man might take the piece of the blade from him as well, if he were lucky enough to find the items.
“Whatever else you find is yours to keep, I just want the ancient scrolls.” he replied.
“Then you have a deal.” Leon held his hand out for the Mage to shake. The baldheaded man grabbed Leon’s wrist, as Leon did the same to his to solidify the deal between them.
“Go now, retrieve the scripts.” the man said. “Remember, your friends lives depend upon you.” “Just keep your end of the deal.” Leon scowled. The thought of helping these scum made him
sick, but others lives depended on his success. He then turned, and with a new focus, made his way towards the exit of the cave and the entrance to the graveyard. At first he wanted to make sure that he could enter without being harmed, so he reached out his hand across the threshold. Leon was trembling with fear, sweat running down his face.
“This be taking to long.” the man angrily hissed before shoving Leon across the threshold into the Dragon Graveyard.
Leon stumbled across into the graveyard, he was barely able to regain his composure before hitting the ground, which made the landing a little less painful. “You bastard.” Gawain shouted. “I’m going to kill you with my bare hands when I get out of this barrier.”
“Silence.” the man demanded. He lifted up his hand and caste another magic spell, this time rendering Gawain unable to speak. “That’s better.” he smirked. He then turned his attention back on Leon and kept a close eye on him to see if he would burst into flames like the others had before him. Leon stood inside the graveyard, he panicked and started to pat himself down frantically. “You’re fine
boy, you have yet to burst into flames.” the man informed him. “Just as I thought.” he muttered to himself.
Leon came to the realization that he had not been harmed in anyway, and that calmed his nerves and strengthened his resolve to save his friends. “You play dirty.” Leon responded. “I promise that if you harm my friends before I return, your death will be swift.”
“I will keep that in mind.” the man laughed. “Enough of the childish banter, go and get the scrolls, before my patience runs thin.”
“Just remember our deal, and my promise to you.” Leon replied before running off into the Dragon Graveyard. As he ran further into the graveyard, the sun was shining bright down upon him, and the heat was almost unbearable. “It’s hotter than the pits of Hades out here.” he said to himself. “I need to find out where to go and quick, or the sun will roast me before I get the chance.” that’s when something caught his attention, there was a silhouette of a man standing off in the distance to his right. “Who goes there?” whoever was following him wasn’t in the mood for chatting. “I said who goes there.” he shouted again, still to no avail. “Since you refuse to answer, then I shall come to you, if that’s the way you want to play.” he dashed off towards the silhouette. However no matter how fast he ran he couldn’t catch up, whoever it was managed to stay just out of his reach. Leon chased after the silhouette until it disappeared behind a huge stone that stuck out from the ground.
“Hello. Is anyone there?” Leon called out as he walked up closer. “I won’t hurt you.” as he drew near the stone it started to glow, which startled Leon. “What sort of magic is this?” he said to himself. That’s when he heard a faint voice that seemed to materialize out of thin air and carry its way over to him.
“The chosen one has returned.” the voice whispered.
“What do you mean by chosen?” Leon shouted. Not this again, first Robin tells me I have a great
bloodline flowing through my veins. Then Ulrich calls me the chosen, now this voice says the same. I’m getting tired of this.
“The one that carries the cursed bloodline, fated to save or destroy this world. That is your fate child, therefore you are the chosen. ” the voice explained.
“I am nothing more than a child, why would such a fate befall me?” “Because you are a Cromwell, are you not?”
“Yes.” Leon sighed.
“The blood from your hand opened the great door, right?” the voice questioned. “Tis true.” Leon said. “But that doesn’t mean I have special blood inside me.”
“If your blood opened the door and you obviously didn’t get burned to ash, then yes, you are of the chosen. Tis your fate like it or not. Someday you will have to accept it as fact.” the voice responded. “Tell me child of the cursed, what is that you seek here.”
It was truly upsetting to Leon that the voice referred to him as “child of the cursed” but he managed to keep himself calm despite. “I seek a piece of a legendary blade, along with ancient scrolls that lay dormant here.”
“If you want the items you seek, then you must brave three trials to prove your worth.” the voice said. “The first trial begins now, can you bare the flames without getting burnt? Lets find out.”
“Bare the flames without getting burnt?” Leon shouted out of fear. “How do I accomplish such a feet?” the voice did not answer, and Leon could hear something moving from afar. Right then the mountains started to move towards him. Is the mountains moving closer to me? Or do my eyes deceive me? as it drew near he could make out what looked like a tail and wings coming from the mountains back side. But what startled him the most were the red glowing eyes that stared back at him. Tis a Dragon.
“This cannot be.” Leon muttered. “Dragon’s have long since been extinct from this world.” he
wanted to run away, to flee as fast as he possibly could. Then he remembered the words “bare the flames without getting burnt” he gathered all the courage he could muster and stood fast, waiting for the Dragon to approach him.
The Dragon didn’t get as close as Leon was expecting before it roared loudly shaking the earth beneath his feet, smoke flowed from its mouth, and without warning fire erupted. Flames sailed threw the air, Leon stood there watching with bewilderment. Flames were upon him, yet he did not move.
Something inside of him had changed as he was no longer afraid, he stood in the center unwavering, not once was he harmed. To him it was incredible to see and feel the power of such a magnificent beast, almost so that for a second he had forgotten that he was engulfed in the flames. When those flames began to fade, Leon watched as the Dragon took flight, and within seconds disappeared into the sky.
“You did good to pass the first trial, young one.” the voice returned. “Bravery is key to becoming the warrior you are meant to be.”
“Who are you?” Leon said. “And why do you hide in the shadows?”
“That boy, shall be made clear to you soon enough.” the voice responded. “Claim ones prize and move on to the next trial.” the center of the stone started to glow yet again, Leon walked up closer to investigate. What he found was an abnormally large golden coin stuck in the center of the stone, once he touched it, the coin fell from the stone and onto the ground. Leon picked up the coin and noticed there was a symbol of the sun carved in the center.
Leon had a feeling that the coin would play an important role in finding the items that he so desperately sought. He carefully placed it in his bag and tied it around his waist to keep it safe, afterwards he surveyed his surroundings trying to figure out what direction he should head in next. When all seemed lost and Leon seemed unsure of his next move, again the silhouette appeared just in front of him, “You again.” he muttered. “I’m not sure that you can be trusted fully, but you did lead me to the first trial. All I can say at this point is, lead the way.”
With that being said the silhouette moved towards the west, and Leon made sure to keep up. Following the silhouette through the graveyard for another hour, treading up step hills, climbing over fallen trees, and hiding from some the biggest insects he had ever seen. Leon finally happened upon something different. It wasn’t just one stone that was placed in the ground, there were many that blocked his path. “What is this?” he muttered, watching the silhouette disappear inside.
“This is your second trial.” it was the same voice from before. “What am I supposed to do here?” Leon asked.
“What you see is the Maze Of No Return.” the voice answered. Leon’s eyes widened, “Why is it called such a name?”
“All who have entered never make it out alive.” the mysterious voice said. “This is your second
trial.”
“I have no choice do I?” Leon gasped.
“No.” the voice replied. “Are you ready, young one?” “I am.” Leon sighed.
“Then go, once you make it out with your life, shall you claim your prize.” one of the large stones slid to the side revealing a way inside. Leon had only one choice, and that was to proceed through the maze.
Leon cautiously took a step forward inside the maze, “This doesn’t look so bad.” he tried to build up the courage to take another step forward, but the entrance way started to crumble and fall apart. Leon dove out of the way, barely missing getting buried by the rubble, he turned to see his only exit vanish. Leon gathered himself and walked on ahead, before long he came to a part of the maze that was spitting flames from both sides of the stone walls. “Really.” he muttered. “First a Dragon, now flames from a wall. Give me a freaking break.” he was getting ready to throw a temper tantrum, when something of importance caught his attention. The flames seemed to stop briefly at times, there was
only one way to navigate through this part of the maze. Leon had to run through each time the flames had stopped.
Again Leon had to summon the courage to press on, he watched carefully as the first set of devices stopped spitting flames, and that’s when he made his move. He ran through the first set as fast as he could before the flames erupted once again. That was close, he thought to himself, rubbing the burnt hairs on the back of his neck. It was now time to conquer the next set of devices, this time it would be a little harder for him, because the flames were stopping and starting quicker than the last. Leon timed the devices, each time they would start and stop he would make a mental note of it until he was ready to attempt his next move. Leon made a run for it again, he would stop each time the devices would activate. At times he would have to jump to the right, then to the left, then to the right again, there was even a few times that he had to roll on the ground. He barely managed to miss the last set of devices, his armor was singed and hot to the touch, it was a miracle that he was even still alive.
Leon was just thankful to be alive, however he wasn’t out of the woods just yet. The young man walked through the maze protecting himself from all kinds of dangers that came at him from all angles. He thought for sure that the end of the maze would soon be approached, but unfortunately for him that wasn’t going to be the case. Leon came to a part of the maze where he had to choose which way to go. But that’s how mazes were supposed to be, however this one was different from others, this maze was filled with traps and other dangers that the eyes cannot see until it was to late.
Which way should I go? To the right, or to the left? It was a tough decision to make, there would be danger no matter what path he chose. Leon looked down both paths multiple times trying to make the right decision, “Well most of the time I’m told to go down the right path, which always seems to get me into trouble.” he smiled. “So left it is.” he cautiously made his way down the path. To his surprise it wasn’t as bad as he had thought it would be. There wasn’t any signs of danger and the walk was way to
easy, which made him worry that something unexpected was about to happen.
It wasn’t long before Leon happened upon what seemed to be statues wearing armor lined up along each side of the stone walls, but that’s not all, the statues had crossbows placed in their hands as well. “What in the hell?” he muttered. “Is this some kind of joke?” however Leon was no idiot, he may have been young, but he was smarter than most adults. He wasn’t about to walk on through without first testing the waters, no matter how ridiculous things had looked to him.
Leon looked around for something that he could throw in the middle of the statues, he wanted to find out what would happen before he himself walked through. Searching the area he found a medium sized rock that was perfect for him to toss. Leon picked it up with both hands, raised it above his head, and threw it right into the center of the statues. With that the crossbows unloaded an obscene amount of arrows that sailed through the air from one side to the other. Leon lowered his head and muttered with disgust, “I knew this seemed to easy.”
Leon stared down the obstacle before him, his heart was racing and sweat dropped from his brow. Leon took a few deep breaths, and poised himself for the run of his life. He took one more glance at the statues, “Lets do this.” he dashed down the center. Leon could hear the arrows sail through the air, but none managed to puncture his flesh. To him it felt like he had ran for hours, and it didn’t seem like there was going to be an end to the blasted statues either.
To Leon’s relief he made it through with his life intact, he was bent over heaving trying to fill his lungs with air. When he raised back up, Leon found himself standing at a dead end. “Are you kidding me.” he snarled. “I’ve survived your maze. I demand that you let me out of here.” he was clearly upset and starting to lose control over his emotions. When he didn’t get a response from the mysterious voice, Leon found himself angered even more. “I said, let me out.” he reared back his fist and proceeded to punch the wall with all of his might.
A small section of the stone wall glowed a bright white, and just like what happened the last
time, an overly sized silver coin appeared. “Claim ones prize, young one.” the mysterious voice had returned yet again.
Leon reached out and took the coin from the wall and placed it in his bag with the other, “One last challenge to go, I’m getting pretty good at this.” he bragged.
“Do not be so brash, young one. You still have one more trial left to go, and he awaits you on the other side of this wall.”
“He?”
“You shall find out soon enough, now go and face your last trial.” the stone wall that had him blocked shook violently then it crumbled to the ground. Leon was now free to exit the maze, he had only one last trial left to go, and the end of the Dragon Graveyard was near. If he survives the last trial, then Leon can grab another piece of the legendary blade, and the scrolls that will guarantee safe passage out of the cave where the Mages are holding his friends hostage. In the back of his mind he thought about his friends lives that depended on his success, he also thought about the words of the mysterious voice, “he awaits”. Who exactly awaits for him on the other side of the wall, and what must he do to make it out alive?
“No point in standing here any longer.” Leon muttered. “I’ve made it this far, there’s no turning back now.” he stepped over the pile of rubble and out of the maze. For such a young boy he had more courage and bravery than most men. And like a loyal knight if there ever was one, he would do anything for his friends, so Leon pressed on yet again. When he stepped out of the Maze Of No Return, a thick mist started to form around him. Again the silhouette that had been leading him through the graveyard appeared in front of him. Accept this time the silhouette wasn’t running away, no this time it was drawing closer to him.
“Are you ready to prove yourself in a test of strength?” “I am.” Leon answered.
As the silhouette drew closer to him, Leon could make out someones arms and legs, even their upper body, but the persons face was still hidden from sight. The mist seemed to part just in front of the person hiding in the shadows, “Then step forward and accept my challenge.” Leon stepped forward (as the voice requested) where there was no mist to accept the challenge. “Good, your bravery speaks volumes.”
“I did as you asked of me, it is time you show yourself to me for once.” Leon said to whoever was hiding in the mist.
“As you wish, young one.” the silhouette slowly walked out from within the mist to show himself, to Leon’s disbelief his father stood before him.
“This cannot be.” Leon gasped. “I watched as the Dark Knight took your life.”
The man took another step closer, “It’s okay, my son. I know that you are confused, but I am your father, that much is true.” Leon couldn’t contain his emotions any longer and ran up to his father hugging him tightly.
“Father, I’ve missed you dearly.” Leon cried.
Bowen held his son in his arms, “And I you my son.” he did his best to fight back his tears, this wasn’t the time for joyful family reunion. Bowen pushed his son back gently, “Leon, my son. Tis not the time for tears, there is much work to be done and I need you to be strong.”
Leon wiped the tears from his eyes, “I understand.” is all the words he could muster.
“That’s my boy.” Bowen smiled. “I’m sure that you are confused, however you must know that what you see before you is very real.”
“How?” Leon asked with a confused look on his face. “Did the Dark Knight not kill you?” “Yes, the Dark Knight did steal my life away from me. How I appear before you now, is called
spirit form. Only can the strongest of warriors use this form when there is a purpose greater than death.” Bowen explained.
“What is that purpose, father?”
Bowen unsheathed his blade, “I must make sure that you are strong enough to accept your fate, before we talk further.”
“What are you doing? I do not wish to fight you.” Leon cried out.
“This is what must be done.” Bowen said. “Unsheathe your blade and prove your strength to me. Or do you wish for your friends to die?” hearing those words echo from his fathers mouth sparked a fire inside Leon that could not be explained, nor controlled. Leon fought the urge to draw his blade on his father, but something deeper inside of him took control and forced his hand. “That’s it. Show me the power that dwells deep inside of you.” Bowen provoked.
Leon drew his sword, “If it is power you wish to see then so be it.” without a second thought in his mind, Leon darted towards his father readying his first attack. Bowen steadied himself and waited until the last second to block the oncoming attack from his sons blade. The steel from their blades could be heard crashing together with enough force that it shook the ground beneath their feet. The shock wave was so powerful that it could even be felt back at the cave, where Leon’s friends and the evil Mages awaited his return.
“Is that all you’ve got?.” Bowen growled after knocking Leon back. “Let me show you how it is done.” Bowen lifted up his blade and brought it crashing down to the ground, some form of light erupted from Bowen’s sword, making its way straight towards his son. Leon had a chance to move and dodge the attack, but he stood steadfast. “What are you doing you fool.” Bowen shouted at him. “Get out of the way.” he wanted to test his son’s strength, not watch him die. Bowen helplessly watched his attack hit its mark and an explosion erupted. All that could be seen was a cloud of smoke floating away into the air, when the smoke cleared, Leon was still standing. “Are you truly that strong alrady?” Bowen muttered under his breath.
“Is that strength enough for you?” Leon asked with a darker tone. “Or should I show you more
of the power that I possess?”
“Go ahead and show me.” Bowen provoked his son further.
“If you insist.” Leon once again darted towards Bowen with his blade dragging the ground behind him. Leon was so fast Bowen could barely track his movements, the young boy slashed his blade upward towards Bowen’s face with such speed that Bowen was barely able to block the blade from hitting him. What he didn’t expect was Leon’s power erupting, he watched as blue flames erupted from his sons body. “How about this.” he was now able to push his father back with ease.
“What strength.” Bowen’s eyes widened, he found it harder to keep Leon’s blade pushed back with his own. It didn’t take long for him to see that Leon had lost control over all of his senses, “Leon, you must listen to me. Focus and take back control of yourself.” at first his words did not reach him, as Leon kept the pressure on. “This is your test of strength, fail this and the people you care about will die.” the blue flames that surrounded Leon started to fade. “That’s it son, control the power that is inside of you.”
“F-Father?” Leon muttered.
“It’s okay son, focus on my voice.” Bowen told him.
Leon lowered his sword, “What is this?” he asked, looking at the blue flames illuminating from his left hand.
“That my son is the power that dwells deep within you.” Bowen answered proudly. “All of us Cromwell’s are cursed with this power.”
“And what of my fate?” Leon questioned, he closed his hand and the flames faded. “That my son, you are not quiet yet ready to learn.” Bowen replied.
“Then when?” Leon questioned.
“I cannot tell you that, my son. It is out of my hands.”
“Then what about the test of strength? If I am not ready yet does that mean I have failed?”
Leon’s voice was sounding more and more frantic.
“Calm yourself.” Bowen smiled. “You have proven your strength to me.” he reached into his pocket and pulled out a large copper coin. Bowen reached out his hand to give Leon the coin.
Leon took the coin from his father, “Will I get to see you again?” he asked. Tears were starting to well up in his eyes when he realized that he had to say goodbye to his father once more.
“I don’t know the answer to that question.” Bowen said. The mist started to surround Bowen’s body, “Looks like my time here is up.” Bowen had become nothing more than a shadow like before. “Be strong my son.” he whispered.
“Don’t go, I need you.” Leon cried out.
“I will always be with you.” was the last thing his father would say to him before all
went silent, the mist slowly dissipated and was no more. All that was left before Leon was a wooden chest that had three slots carved into it. Leon wanted to fall to his knees and ball his eyes out, but he had to be strong for his friends, and his father.
