Chapter 21: The True Journey Begins
Leon awoke to find Robin hovering over him, “I had a feeling you would show up here again soon enough.” he chuckled. “To your feet boy, we have much to do.”
“Don’t rush me.” Leon mumbled, slowly getting to his feet. “Can I ask you something?” “What is it?” Robin responded. “But be quick about it, for today you train with a blade.” “Do you know if I am dead or still among the living?” Leon asked, scratching the back of his
head nervously.
“Why do you ask such a question?” Robin stopped, where two wooden blades lay across from one another on the ground. “Take a blade from the ground.”
Leon reached down picking up one of the wooden swords, “Well the man that possesses the Reaper Blade had me by the throat, I could feel my life slipping away.”
Robin stabbed his cane in the air laughing, “If you were dead, then you would be in the cross plans. But you find yourself back here, that should tell you something.” he answered.
Leon smiled faintly, “Then I live, that is good to hear.” I wonder who saved me then? Once I return, I will have to ask what happened.
“No matter.” Robin huffed. “Time to start your training.”
Leon held up the wooden sword, it resembled that of the training swords Gawain is so fond of, but that didn’t stop him from being an ass. “This is nothing but a toy. What would you have me do with this, pick my teeth?”
Robin snarled, bending over to pick up the other wooden sword. “I will show you the maneuvers that I want you to perform. Once you are done you shall understand why I want you to start off with a wooden sword.” he widened his stance, holding himself steady with his cane. Robin slashed the wooden blade through the air in different directions, twisting and turning with each fluid motion. “Practice these moves first and foremost.” he stopped looking over at Leon. “Now it’s your turn.”
Leon took the same stance that Robin had shown him, “Widen your stance.” Robin tapped Leon’s back foot with his cane. “That’s better. Hold the blade high above your head, with an arch to you arm. Make sure you bend at the elbow slightly.” Leon did as the old man directed, “That’s good, that’s good. You learn quick, I’m impressed.” he smirked. “Swing the blade as I showed you, do not stop until I say.” Leon swung the blade exactly as Robin had instructed. “Faster.” Robin demanded. After five minutes of swinging the wooden blade, the muscle in Leon’s arm started to burn, but that didn’t stop Robin from wanting him to increase his speed. “Faster.” he shouted. “Swing the blade with more force.” Leon did this for another ten minutes. He wasn’t sure how much more his body could take, every single muscle, even ones he had never used before ached with every move he made. No matter how hard it got for him he refused to stop, he was going to show Robin just how strong he really was.
Robin held up his hand, “That is enough, Leon. You may stop, it won’t be long now until you return to your realm.” he motioned for him to follow over to an old wooden bench. “Please take a seat, we have much to discuss.” Robin took a seat first, and Leon joined him. “You look thirsty.” Robin said, reaching over to grab a bucket from the ground. “Here.” he handed Leon the bucket. “Fresh water.”
“Thanks.” Leon smiled, taking the bucket of water. “What did you want to talk to me about?” he asked before taking a wooden spoon full of water into his mouth.
“You said that the Reaper Blade had been claimed. Is that true?” Robin inquired.
“It’s true.” Leon answered. “A man named Alistair took the power of the Reaper Blade for his own.” Leon frowned. “Alistair was King Edwards first knight, he was a man of honor and pride, he cared deeply for others. But something changed in him, he became a man obsessed with power, and now he has it. I tried to go up against him, but he was to strong.”
“I see.” Robin sighed. “That means his return is near.” “Who’s return is near?”
“The Dark One.” Robin answered. “He who controls all things unclean.” “What is his name?”
“His name is Collin Grimewall, the Dark Mage I told you about, the one that caused the Great
War.”
“The dead cannot come back to life.” Leon chuckled.
“This is no laughing matter.” Robin snapped. “Just because the man was defeated and killed does not mean his dark powers are gone from this world.”
“How is that possible?” Leon asked.
“Collin transferred his powers into the Reaper Blade, claiming that one day someone worthy would take control over the blade and resurrect him, bringing darkness into the world once again.
However, all that have come in contact with the Reaper Blade eventually lost control and would become mad. Which is why the blade was broken into pieces, hidden from the world, by none other than Edward and your father. That kind of power should never fall into the hands of man, but it seems as though it has been resurrected regardless.”
“Your story makes no sense, how could my father or King Edward have anything to do with the
Great War? It was almost a million years ago.”
“That’s true, it doesn’t. But the story goes like this, your father and Sir Edward, along with a few others, were chosen by the gods. They were taken from their time and brought to this one, to aid in
the Great War. Those same men and women were given weapons of great power, in the end if not for them, your world would not have been what it is today. Whatever happened when they returned back to their own time is of no concern to me, but here they were legendary.” Robin explained.
“I had no idea.” Leon muttered. “He never spoke of it to me, is that why the Cromwell bloodline is so special like you say.”
“The Cromwell bloodline is powerful, but it is also cursed.” Robin responded. “For you see Collin was also of the Cromwell bloodline. Because of that, Brom was the only one that could kill Collin and destroy the Reaper Blade. Now he has been killed by the Dark Knights, and here you stand before me.”
“What are you trying to say, Robin?”
“Don’t play coy with me.” Robin grumbled. “I know that you have heard rumors of what you are truly meant to do. I also know that your father has appeared before you, and tested your metal.”
“How do you know such things?”
Robin started to hear voices calling out to him, “That is not important at the moment, as your time to leave here draws near.” he said. “Listen to my words very carefully, you cannot forget once you return to your realm. There is an Amulet that your father had hidden from the world, until the day you were ready to accept your destiny. Find the Amulet, keep it safe. Then in three years time, take the Amulet to the Tomb Of Carnage, when the moon covers the sun, place it around your neck and bath in the light, afterwards all will become clear.”
Leon wanted to talk further, but everything began to spin, which was something he had become accustomed to. Something was different about how he returned this time, images flashed through
Leon’s mind. The images were of his father being slain by the Dark Knight, and when that knight turned to face him, it was none other than Ulrich. “You dirty dog.” he shouted, throwing punches into the wind.
“Stop it Leon, you’re safe.” when Leon awoke, Lady Catherine was kneeling by his side. “You’re safe, Leon.” she said with kindness.
“Where am I?” Leon moaned.
“You are in the Hyss Woodland.” Catherine answered. “Land of the Elves.” “How did I get here?” Leon questioned.
“Lady Catherine saved our hides.” Gawain interrupted.
“No, you are the ones that saved us.” Catherine smiled, which made Gawain blush.
“Long story short.” Gawain coughed. “You broke the shackles that had Lady Catherine, Henry, and Jeffrey bound. Then you took it upon yourself to challenge Alistair, which did not go well mind you. When it seemed as though we were doomed, Lady Catherine cast a spell of blinding light. That gave us the chance to retreat, so now we find ourselves here.”
“Alistair, nor Caine has tried to chase us down?” Leon vaguely asked.
Lady Catherine laughed at the slightest notion of such a bold move being made, “Alistair would not dare such a thing, not even he would be willing to defy the Elvish people by showing up in these woods unannounced.”
“Yet here we are.” Leon responded. “What makes you think they will be so accepting of us?” “The Academy has done the Elvish people many favors.” Gawain answered. “And I know the
leader personally, she is a kind woman. I also believe she will give us aid, and a place to rest for a few days.”
“Can we hurry?” Henry interrupted. “I’m starving.”
Jeffery smacked Henry on the back of the head, “Think with your head, not with your stomach
for once.”
“I cannot help that I’m hungry.” Henry said, rubbing the back of his head. “You’re always hungry.” Jeffery huffed.
“Would you two put a cork in it.” Gawain grumbled, before looking back down at Leon. “Can you stand?”
“Shouldn’t be a problem.” Leon said, he tried to get to his feet, but his legs were still wobbly. “I seem to be weaker this time around.”
Lady Catherine grabbed hold of Leon’s arm and helped him up, “Well Alistair was trying his best to choke the life out of you.” she said.
“True.” Leon mumbled. “That’s about all I remember.” “We need to get moving.” Gawain said.
“Like I said, they wouldn’t dare chase us here. You know that, Master Gawain.” Catherine chuckled.
“Master Gawain is right.” Leon sighed. “Nobody is safe from Alistair’s wrath, now that he possess the Reaper Blade.”
Lady Catherine hissed. “Do you think you know more than I?”
Leon shook his head, “No disrespect to you, Lady Catherine. But the Reaper Blades power is something that mortal men cannot handle for very long. It won’t be long before it consumes Alistair’s mind. When that happens, there is no limit to what the man will do.”
Lady Catherine looked over at Gawain, “Is that true?”
Gawain nodded, “It is.” he said. “That is why I want us to keep moving. I believe we will be safer once we get to the Elves village.”
“Like we have a chance against Alistair and Caine.” Henry whispered.
“Shut up.” Jeffery elbowed Henry in the gut. “If anyone can defeat the likes of them it’s, Master
Gawain.”
Gawain lead them deep into Hyss Woodland, it was the first that any beside Gawain had been this deep into the Elven Forest. Leon was in awe at the sight of such greenery, as was Henry and Jeffrey, but Lady Catherine seemed like she did not care for such trivial things. But still yet Leon could not believe what he was seeing, the trees were green and lush, like the grass beneath his feet, and an unknown fruit grew from the branches. Flowers bloomed a bright red, pink, and blue, the fragrances they put off was absolutely wonderful. Even though it was winter, it seemed as though the cold did not have an effect on this place.
“What keeps this place so green, even in the harshest of winters?” Leon muttered.
“It’s Elven magic that keeps this forest alive.” Gawain answered, without looking back. “What of the berries that grow from the trees?” Henry asked, drool was clearly running down
the sides of his mouth. “They look so delicious.”
“Don’t even think about it, Henry.” Gawain warned. “If you do not know the differences in these berries and fruits, it could be dangerous. You wouldn’t want to die of poisoning would you?”
“No.” Henry grumbled. “Its just they look so good, and I’m hungry.” “We just ate not long ago.” Gawain said.
“So, it doesn’t mean that I’m not hungry.” Henry whined.
“By the gods, how have your friends put up with you this long.” Gawain snapped. A noise coming from up in the trees took his attention else where. Gawain then came to an abrupt stop, “Do not move another inch.” he whispered.
“Gawain, what has gotten into you?” Lady Catherine questioned. “We’re surrounded.” Gawain answered.
“I see nothing of the sorts.” she responded. “It’s just your imagination.”
“Not on the ground.” Gawain pointed up toward the trees. “Up there, and there, and there.”
there were what looked to be people in the trees, wearing clothing made out of leaves, baring masks made of the same material. All having bows aimed at them, ready to fire arrows at any sudden movements. “Those are Elves, be mindful that right now they see us as the enemy.”
“Usually, you are not this easy to get the jump on Gawain.” a voice called out. “I believe this is the first you have used this tactic.” Gawain shouted.
Someone stepped out from around the back of a tree, “Your companions are quiet loud.” the person pulled off the mask, revealing gray eyes, a straight cut chin, and long silver hair. “This is unlike you, Gawain.” he smirked.
Gawain walked up to the man and took his wrist, “It has been to long, Aurelius.” he laughed. Aurelius pulled Gawain into a hug, and slapped him on the back. “Far to long, my friend.” he smiled. “So tell me Gawain, what brings you back to these woods?” he motioned for the others in the
trees to lower their weapons.
“We seek aid from the evil that chases us.” Gawain answered.
“And them?” Aurelius asked. “Can I trust in them the way I trust in you?” “You can.” Gawain answered.
“Then tell me their names.”
Gawain nodded, “This young man here with the brown hair, and the goatee on his face, is Leon. That one goes by the name of Henry, the one standing beside him is Jefferey, double trouble as I like to call them. And the good lady here, is none other than the beautiful, Lady Catherine.”
Aurelius walked up to Lady Catherine, taking her hand in his, “You are right about one thing, she is beautiful.” he smiled, and kissed her hand.
“I didn’t know Elvish men were such gentlemen.” Catherine blushed.
“Will you help us or not?” Gawain hissed, stepping in between Aurelius and Lady Catherine.
“I can see why you like her.” Aurelius whispered. “You know that I cannot answer that question.
But I shall take you to the one that can.”
“Divine Counselor Allora.” Gawain responded.
“The one and same.” Aurelius smiled. “I’m sure she will be happy to see you well. However I need to handle some business first. Apparently Allora felt a strong disturbance enter the Hyss Woodland, like always I was sent to investigate. ”
“Did you find anything?” Gawain asked.
“Just you.” Aurelius answered, then looked up at his men in the trees. “Aa’ lasser en lle coia orn n’ omenta gurtha.” he spoke in a Elvin tongue, none could understand what he was saying, except for Gawain of course. When Aurelius was done speaking, his companions disappeared from the trees, not making a single noise, nor disturbing any leaves that hung from the branches. “Please follow me, to the town of Rehakadi.”
The Elvish town of Rehakadi was in the middle of Hyss Woodlands. Homes were mainly inside of the trees, the same fruits and berries grew in the town as they did in the forest, along with the same flowers. Bulbs grew from the tree branches that seemed to glow a bright blue, which was the towns source of light. Different smells of fragrances filled the air, and Henry was quick to point out the smell of meats, bread, and figs.
“Your friend seems hungry.” Aurelius laughed. “He’s always hungry.” Gawain chuckled.
“Maybe Aurelius should remember his manners, and be kind enough to offer food to our guests.” a female voice called out. When they all turned around a female stood before them, with long flowing blonde hair with a touch of gray. Her skin was ivory and fair, her eyes shimmered a light blue like sapphires in the sun. But when she spoke the lady had a certain sternness to her voice.
“Divine Counselor Allora.” Aurelius stammered. “Forgive my foolishness, of course I shall offer them food.”
Gawain tried his best to hold back his laughter, “Don’t scold him on my account.”
Allora walked up closer to Gawain, looking him over from top to bottom. “Is that you, Sir Gawain.”
“It’s been a long time, Allora.” Gawain smiled. Allora’s eyes lit up, and she pulled Gawain into a warm embrace. “I’ve missed you too.” he smiled.
“The last I seen of you, you were nothing more than mere boy.” Allora gasped. “Now look at you, all grown up.”
Seeing the overly friendly confrontation between Allora and Gawain, made Lady Catherine fume with anger. “Is there a place I can freshen up around here? I’m feeling a little dirty.” she snarled.
“Oh yes, please forgive me.” Allora said. “I shall have someone take you to your sleeping quarters.”
“What about me?” Henry interrupted, patting on his stomach. “Can you not see that I’m starving?”
“Forgive me, Henry.” Allora chuckled. “I have not forgotten about you.” she said, still with a warm smile on her face. “Kallen.” Allora called out.
In seconds Kallen appeared, he was an older man with a slight curve to his back. “You called, Divine Counselor?” he bowed.
“I did, Kallen.” Allora responded. “Take Lady Catherine here, to one of our guest quarters.
Afterwards, please take Henry, that boy there, to the dining hall so he can feast.”
“As you wish, Divine Counselor.” Kallen humbly bowed. “Please follow me.” he turned and slowly walked away with Henry hot on his heels, while Lady Catherine walked away glaring back at Allora.
“Something wrong, young Jeffery?” Allora asked. “Do you not wish to join your friend in the dinning hall?”
Jeffery shook his head, “No, I’m not hungry.” he sighed.
Allora walked up to Jeffery, and placed her hand on his shoulder. “Sooner or later the sadness will pass, and light will shine showing a new path for you to take.”
“I hope you are right.” Jeffery forced a smile to his face, and turned to walk away.
Allora looked back to Gawain and Leon, “Aurelius, please leave us. I need to talk to these two
alone.”
“Of course.” Aurelius bowed, and walked away. “What is this about, Allora?” Gawain asked.
“I just want to have a quick chat, just not here.” Allora answered. “If you wouldn’t mind, please follow me.” she lead them through the town, down a dark corridor, and into a large garden.
“Is all this necessary?” Gawain questioned.
“It is.” Allora replied. “There are unwanting ears wondering the streets, I do not wish for them to hear this conversation.”
“It must be important to have us all the way out here.” Gawain said. “That it is.”
“Then talk freely, we shall tell you anything you wish to know.”
Allora nodded with approval, then began with her questioning. “Gawain, I felt a powerful surge of evil just a day or so ago. Would you know something about that?”
“Why not just read our minds?” Gawain questioned. “What? She can read our minds?” Leon gasped.
“I can. That’s how I knew your names without asking.” Allora smiled.
“Wow. That’s amazing.” Leon gasped again. “Are you reading my mind now?”
Allora’s face seemed to contort with anger, “No.” she snarled. “For some reason I cannot read your mind when you’re focused. And I taught Gawain long ago how to keep others from doing so, even
me. Anyways, could we get back to the subject.”
“Interesting.” Gawain muttered. “But to answer your question, the Reaper Blade has been restored, that was the evil you felt.”
“How is that possible?” Allora acted as though she was in a state of disbelief. “That dark blade you speak of was broken many moons ago, the pieces were scattered throughout this land. Nobody has ever been able to retrieve them.”
“Yeah about that.” Gawain sighed. “What have you done?” Allora snapped.
“We may have went on a quest to retrieve the pieces of the Reaper Blade.” Gawain muttered. “What!”
Gawain ducked his head slightly, “But to our defense, we had no idea what we were after at first.” he frowned. “Once we realized what we had done it was to late.”
“To be honest we did try and stop them, but there were to many innocent people around. We couldn’t just let them get hurt because of our stupidity.” Leon interrupted.
“And what of your companions?” Allora snarled. “I read their thoughts. I seen the images of Gawain fighting Caine. Leon you were fighting another young man, before you went after the person holding the Reaper Blade.”
Leon looked away for a brief moment, “That’s all true, I cannot deny that. However let me tell you the whole truth, the other I was fighting with, was my friend Ulrich. He’s a good person deep down, his mind has just been poisoned by Caine, and the man holding the Reaper Blade, the now King of Drasal, Alistair.” just speaking the mans name made his heart burn with a fiery rage.
“So you could save the people of the Academy, but you could not stop the Reaper Blades resurrection.” Allora grumbled.
“What you didn’t see when you read our companions minds, were the Dark Mages, and their
leader, Zerius.” Gawain explained.
“Zerius was involved?” Allora gasped out of fear. “This could only mean one thing.” “Why do I have a feeling this won’t be good?” Gawain sighed.
“Because it won’t be.” Leon added. “Not only has the Reaper Blade been resurrected, but the true owner of that blade Collin Grimewall, will soon be brought back from the land of the dead, or at least his powers will be.”
“How do you know that name?” Allora hissed. “Gawain, did you tell him of that man?”
Gawain held his hands up, “It wasn’t me. I only know little of Collin Grimewall, and it was the information you shared with me long ago. And I sure as hell didn’t know he could be brought back from the land of the dead either.”
“It wasn’t him that told me.” Leon said. “Then who?” Allora questioned.
“Does it matter?” Gawain barked.
“I guess not.” Allora calmly answered.
That brought a sigh of relief from Leon’s lips, for he knew he had already said to much. Robin had forbidden him to talk about where he had been, and who he had been talking with for that matter. Until it was necessary, Leon was supposed to keep all of the things he had learned to himself, and share with no one.
“There’s only one way you could know as much as you do, because the Academy is not allowed to teach such things. But only prepare others for the coming.” Allora gave Leon a stern look, which made him feel uncomfortable. “I can see the worry in your eyes, Leon. But do not worry, I will not talk of such things just yet. However let me explain one thing, what you have learned is not completely right. For you see there is one that carries Collin’s true powers inside of them, when the time comes for that person to claim the Reaper Blade. Collin will try and claim the host or maybe even work with the
host, if he cannot take them against their will. It all depends on who is stronger.” “Either way, it sounds like we are screwed.” Leon huffed.
“No, that’s no the case either.” Allora replied. “The rest of the legend states that someone with great power will come along to challenge the one that controls the Reaper Blade. With a powerful blade of his own, he shall end the darkness bringing the light, or bring forth great destruction ending this world.” she explained. “But that’s not all, this man will have cursed blood coursing through his veins.”
“C-Cursed blood.” Leon swallowed nervously. “Are you sure?”
“So says the legend.” Allora shrugged. “But I wouldn’t worry about that Alistair guy, the blade will drive him mad before long.”
“By the gods Allora, for a Divine Counselor you say some stupid shit.” Gawain hissed. “Alistair is stronger than you give him credit for, and if the blade eventually drives him crazy, he will start killing innocent people. Which means he has to be stopped.”
“Because we are old friends, I will not hold such insolence against you.” Allora glared at Gawain. “If you wish to undo what has been done, that boy holds the answer.” she said, pointing at Leon. “I can see it in his eyes, he needs to tell us something more.”
“Is that true, Leon?” Gawain asked.
“I don’t hold the key to-” Leon caught himself mid-sentence, like a lightning bolt to the head he remembered Robin’s words before he found himself back where he belonged. “The Tomb Of Carnage.” he whispered.
“What did you say?” Gawain responded.
“The Tomb Of Carnage.” Leon said louder. “That is where we must go.”
“Are you mad?” Gawain grumbled. “Such a journey would take years, that’s if we’re lucky enough to make it there and back alive.”
“But we must.” Leon demanded.
“Why?” Gawain snapped.
“Because that tomb may hold the secret to stopping Alistair.”
Gawain took a deep breath, running his fingers through his hair. “I don’t like this one bit, but it seems as though we don’t have many options.” he sighed. “Tell me what we must do, Leon.”
“We have to find a certain amulet that my father had hidden. When we find and bring the amulet to the Tomb Of Carnage, the moon will cover the sun. When that happens I must wear the amulet around my neck and bath in the light. Afterwards all will become clear.”
“What will happen to you in the process?” Gawain questioned with a look of worry in his eyes. “I do not know.” Leon answered. “But it’s a chance I am willing to take.”
“I know by the look on your face that I will not be able to stop you.” Gawain sighed, and looked at Allora. “How do we obtain a vessel?”
Allora had a far off look in her eyes before saying, “Aurelius has connections in the port town of Desheustan. He knows a person there that has a boat that may be willing to help. If the price is right. I will have Aurelius accompany you there, and see if we can work out a deal. Does that work for you?”
“It does.” Gawain smiled. “However, before we go on another long journey, I do believe we need to rest a few days first.”
“Of course, that’s why I sent word with Kallen to have rooms ready for you, and your companions.”
“Thank you, Allora.” Gawain bowed.
“You are much welcome, Sir Gawain.” Allora smiled. “Can I ask that you leave me to speak to Leon alone?”
“May I ask why?” Gawain questioned.
“You may not.” Allora said. “What I have to say is meant for Leon’s ears only.” “As you wish.” Gawain nodded, before walking away, leaving Leon alone with her.
“What is so important that Master Gawain couldn’t stay?” Leon inquired.
“Because what I wish to talk about, upsets you when others are near.” Allora responded. “I see you are confused. Let me put it this way, I know of your powers, and the cursed blood that flows through your veins.”
Leon’s eyes widened, “How do you know about that? I haven’t told a soul.”
“I can sense the power awakening inside of you, along with other things.” Allora answered. “Other things?”
“Indeed.” Allora said. “Like the fact that I know you’ve been to another realm, that smell follows a person. Almost all Elvish kind can sense it.”
“That explains why Aurelius was giving me such odd looks.” Leon muttered. “He must be able to sense the power that dwells inside of me as well.”
“He can.” Allora nodded. “But he did not wish to put you in an awkward situation by bringing up such matters in front of your friends. Same as I, which is why I asked Gawain to leave us.”
“You were wise to do so, it would have been hard to explain these things in front of him.” Leon
sighed.
“Do not worry about Gawain, he knows more about you then you know about yourself.” “I knew as much.” Leon smirked.
“He was just trying to keep you safe.”
“Still you have not told me why you kept me here alone.” Leon changed the subject on purpose. “May I ask you something then?” Allora played along with the young man.
“You may.”
“Have you spoke to anyone from the other realm?”
Leon refused to make eye contact with Allora, “I’m not supposed to talk about that, not with anyone.”
“Okay then, let me rephrase that. Was there an old man waiting for you when you first visited the other realm?” Leon didn’t give an answer with words, instead he just nodded. “Do you know his name?” again Leon nodded. “Was the old mans name Robin?” Leon wanted to shake his head no, but he couldn’t fight the urge to nod yet again. “Has he been training you?” he nodded again. Leon couldn’t figure out what was happening, his body told her the truth with every question no matter how hard he fought against it. “Robin was the one that told you about Collin was he not? Please answer with words this time.”
“If I do not speak you will just make my body tell you instead, right?” Leon angrily hissed. “What if I do? This is important, and your refusal to talk is not acceptable.” Allora snapped. Leon glared at her, she knew to much, there was no point in keeping secrets from Allora now.
“Fine.” he grumbled. “If you answer a question of my own then I will tell you everything.” Allora thought about it for a minute, “Deal. Ask me your question.”
“Why is this so important? Do you get something out of all this?”
“I will be honest with you Leon.” Allora sighed. “The magic in this world is starting to fade.
And I’m afraid this Alistair man you speak of is the cause, if he succeeds with whatever he has planned. Then my people will be no more, for it is magic that gives us our immortality, with out it we will surely parish.” Allora explained. “If I help you to defeat that vile man, then my people will live on.
Understand?”
“Can you not just defeat him yourself?” Leon asked. “I see the strength in numbers you have here, is that not enough?”
“The power of the Reaper Blade grows with each passing day.” Allora said. “If we were to attack him head on, we would fail, in the end giving the blade even more power. Leon, you are this worlds only hope. The power inside of you is the only thing that can defeat the darkness.”
“What if I refuse?” Leon hissed.
“Then this world will surely be plunged into darkness.” Allora warned. “Everyone you know will either parish, or become slaves.” Leon looked down at the ground then back up at Allora, she gave him a few minutes to ponder on if he could trust in her words or not. With a great sigh Leon explained everything that had happened with him personally, what had transpired during his journey with Ellyn, Gawain, and Ulrich. Allora paced back and forth mumbling to herself.
“The words I speak is truth.” Leon said.
Allora stopped and studied Leon even closer, “I thank you for telling me the truth, however I must take my leave now. There is much to talk over with Aurelius, and you need rest. Do not worry we shall talk again soon enough.” off she went, hurriedly back towards the town hall.
That night Gawain and Leon, had a very long and interesting conversation. “Leon?” Gawain said, holding something wrapped in cloth tight in his hands.
“What is it, Master Gawain?” Leon responded.
Gawain just stared at the object in his hands, “Pleas stop calling me Master.” he mumbled. “You are a Master at the Academy, therefor you deserve such respect.” Leon responded with a
faint smile.
“The Academy of Drasal is finished, we are all that remains.” Gawain sighed. “What do you mean by, we are all that is left?” Leon inquired.
“When you stayed to talk with Allora, I met up with Aurelius, and we went back to Drasal.” Gawain lowered his head. “Alistair had everyone that was left at the Academy barricaded inside. And then-” he paused, Gawain’s face turned pale and he looked as though he was about to be sick.
“What happened?” Leon questioned, even though he was afraid of the answer.
Gawain shook his head, “Alistair had the building set ablaze, not a single soul manged to escape. They were all burned alive.” his grip on the object in his hands tightened.
“You lie.” Leon hissed, trying to hold back his tears.
“It’s the truth.” Gawain muttered.
“I don’t believe you.” Leon shouted, tears running down his face.
Gawain sighed. “Accept it or not, tis the truth. Remember, it is hard on every one of us.” “Yet you sit there like its no big deal.” Leon snarled.
“You better watch your tongue.” Gawain stood from his chair. “The Academy was home to many, not just you. Think of how this must effect Lady Catherine, Henry, and Jefferey. It was the only home they had ever known, twas my home as well. Caine betrayed us all, if you want to direct your anger at someone, aim it towards him.”
“You’re right.” Leon said, wiping the tears from his eyes. “I’m sorry.” “Only be sorry if we fail.” Gawain replied.
“Fail at what?” Leon questioned. “Revenge.” Gawain hissed.
“Revenge?” Leon laughed. “How do you suppose we get revenge?”
“You said it yourself, we take the amulet of your fathers to the Tomb Of Carnage.” Gawain responded.
“We don’t even know where to find the amulet.” Leon grumbled. “For all we know the Dark Knights have it, which means Alistair will have it by now.”
“Why would the Dark Knights give the amulet to Alistair?” Gawain asked. “Don’t you know?”
“Know what?”
“That he who holds the Reaper Blade controls the Dark Knights.”
“But the blade will drive him mad, how will he control such power with an unsteady mind?” “Like you said before, Alistair is stronger than we think. It may take longer for the blades power
to consume him.”
“We shall cross that bridge when we get there.” Gawain said. “However, I do know for a fact the Dark Knights nor Alistair have the amulet.”
“You know that how?”
Gawain unwrapped the object in his hand, revealing Leon’s fathers amulet. “Because I have it.” he responded.
“Where did you get that?” Leon gasped.
“I took it from your hut, the day I made a promise to you father.” Gawain answered.
“Wait, I thought my father was dead the day you rescued me.” Leon replied, he had a confused look on his face, for it was the first he had heard of this.
“A Dark Knight had fatally injured your father, and killed your mother. As he lay on the floor breathing his last breath, your father asked me to take you back to Drasal and keep you safe. Until the time came for me to give you this amulet and blade. I believe that time is now.” he held up the amulet for Leon to take. “I have kept this safe for many a year, now it is your turn to do what is necessary.”
“My father wanted me to have this?” Leon muttered.
Gawain nodded, “He did.” with an unsteady hand, Leon reached out to take the amulet from Gawain. The amulet was rusted and didn’t have much of a shine to it, and the jewel in the center had no color to it whatsoever.
“Do amulets not shine with power?” Leon questioned.
“Normally they do.” Gawain answered. “However, this one seems to have lost whatever power it once held.”
“Then it is of no use to us.” Leon lowered his head in disbelief, then he remembered Robin’s words of advice and that gave him hope. “That is why we must take it to the Tomb Of Carnage. If the amulet baths in the light of the moon and sun together, it just might restore what was once lost, and everything will become clear. It all makes sense now.” Leon paused momentarily. “You said something
about a blade as well, did you not?”
“Yes, back in my younger days I found the sword Nightbane.” Gawain responded. “When I touched the blade, I started hearing voices. In that moment everything changed for me, that is also when the change began in Alistair as well.”
“Why do you believe that blade is meant for me?” Leon asked.
“It’s hard to explain.” Gawain replied. “You will just have to trust me on this.” “Where is the blade now?”
“I brought it with me. However, it is hidden away somewhere safe, not even you shall know of its location.”
“Do you not trust me?”
“It’s not that I don’t trust you, Leon.” “Then what?”
“I have to be wise when I give you the blade. There is no telling what will happen when you touch Nightbane, and that cannot happen here of all places.”
“Why not?” Leon asked.
“Allora would sense the blades power, and yours for that matter.” Gawain explained. “She already knows about me.” Leon responded.
“Still yet, it wouldn’t be a good move on our part to try something under her nose. Especially since she is willing to aid us in finding a vessel, and giving us a place to stay for a while.” Gawain explained.
“Gawain, how long do you think this voyage will take?” Leon questioned.
“That was certainly out of the blue.” Gawain chuckled. “Quick to change the subject, huh?” “It’s not that.” Leon hesitated. “I’m just curious is all.”
Gawain wasn’t sure why Leon wanted to change the subject, but still yet he answered the
question regardless. “If we are lucky it should take us about two and a half, maybe three seasons passing.” he said. “Are you going to tell me why you ask such a question?”
Leon leaned his back up against the wall, not once taking his gaze off of Gawain. “Because we have three full seasons before the moon covers the sun.” he answered.
“Looks like our stay here will be short.” Gawain huffed. “Get some rest, tomorrow we make preparations.”
The next day came quick enough and Gawain had already gone when Leon woke. Leon didn’t worry though, he had a feeling that Gawain was out making preparations for the long road ahead. On Gawain’s bed were fresh clothing, gloves, boots, and a cape, along with a protective chain mail that went underneath his tunic. Leon smiled, this was clearly Allora’s doing, she must have had Kallen bring them new gear. He got dressed, slipped his boots on, then buttoned the cape to his tunic, before heading out the door. When Leon made his way outside, Henry and Jeffery were waiting for him.
“Leon, over here.” Henry shouted, waiving his hand in the air to get Leon’s attention.
“Hey guys.” Leon waved back, making his was towards them. “Are the two of you waiting for
me?”
“Yeah, we’ve been out here for hours.” Henry grumbled. “I even missed breakfast because of
you.”
Jeffery shot Henry an angry look, shaking his head. “Just ignore him, Leon. You know how he gets if he’s not stuffing his face all day.”
“I don’t stuff my face all day.” Henry pouted like a three year old. Jeffery patted Henry’s stomach, “So says your gut.”
“Okay you two.” Leon laughed a little. “Which one of you are going to tell me why you are
here?”
“Gawain wants us to stock up on provisions.” Jeffery said.
“Then meet him at the town entrance, when done.” Henry interrupted. “We better hurry then.” Leon responded.
Later into the day almost everyone stood at the town entrance waiting for one last person to show. “What is taking Gawain so long?” Henry hissed. “I’m getting-”
“You’re getting hungry.” everyone shouted at once. “That was mean.” Henry mumbled to himself.
Another thirty minutes had passed before Gawain walked up with Allora and Aurelius. “Sorry I’m late.” Gawain said apologetically. “We had some things to discuss.”
“What is this about?” Lady Catherine asked. “And why are they with you?”
“Good question.” Gawain smiled. “Hopefully I can give you a good enough answer. You see, Leon and myself are about to go on a very long journey. It will be tough, and very dangerous. Hell I don’t even know if we will even survive or not, to be honest with all of you. To get to the point, we will be making are way to the Tomb Of Carnage. And for that we will be needing a vessel, Aurelius here knows someone in Desheustan that may be willing to help us out. Right now, we need all the help we can get. I guess what I am saying is, who will be willing to lend us aid on this long and treacherous journey? Remember, you don’t have to do any of this. Nobody is forcing you, if you would like to stay here where it is safe and start a new life for yourselves, I will understand. Decide this for yourself, not for us.” he explained.
“That’s foolish to even ask me a question such as that.” Lady Catherine said, walking up to Gawain. “Count me in, someone has to keep you out of trouble.” she laughed. “My magic and skill of herbal healing will aid you in your quest.”
“Thank you.” Gawain humbly bowed. “Don’t thank me yet.” Catherine smiled.
“Well I have no choice in the matter.” Leon interrupted, taking his place beside Gawain and
Lady Catherine. “It seems I am the key piece in righting all of this madness.”
“I have no home to return to, so you can count me in as well. At this point I would do anything to take vengeance on those that did us wrong.” Jeffery took his place beside Leon. “What about you Henry?”
“What about me?” Henry asked.
“Will you be joining us? Or will you stay behind?” “If I go, will there be food?” Henry questioned.
“Who cares if there will be food or not?” Jeffery hissed. “This will be our chance to find a way to take that bastard Alistair down, along with his lapdog Caine. Who knows, we may even get a chance to teach Ulrich what happens when you betray the group.”
“I care about food.” Henry snapped, ignoring all else that Jeffery had said. “A person has to eat you know.”
“Are you coming or not?” Jeffery sighed.
“Feed me and I will follow you to the ends of the earth.” Henry laughed.
“It’s settled then.” Allora clapped her hands together. “This is a new beginning, a new batch of hero’s that will rise to once again take on the darkness.” she smiled.
“I assure you Allora, this is nothing like the tales of old.” Gawain said.
“That is where you are wrong, Gawain. In time even you will see that you cannot escape ones destiny.” Allora replied. “Kallen, bring the horses.” she shouted. “You will find that your saddle bags have been stocked well. It should be enough to last you until you reach, Desheustan. There Aurelius, will take care of the rest.” Allora walked over to Leon and whispered something in his ear before walking away.
When Kallen brought the horses over to them, Aurelius was quick to mount his horse first. “Be quick.” he demanded of the others. “ We have a long road ahead before we get to Desheustan, and the
way I hear it, time is of the essence.” he spurred the horse and off he went.
“Do not fall behind.” Gawain warned. “Aurelius is not one for going back to search for someone.” he smirked, and spurred his horse on. Followed by Leon, then Lady Catherine, who seemed to enjoy the challenge given. Jeffery made sure to keep up the best he could, for riding a horse was not one of his strongest of skills. Last was Henry, his horse seemed to be going the slowest, it was unclear if he was just that bad of a rider. Or the fact that Henry’s horse didn’t care much for him.
The road to Desheustan was a long one, the warriors had to cross some of the roughest terrain in all the lands, full of monstrous beasts, and man eating plants. And if that wasn’t enough to deal with, bandits and slave traders scoured the bad lands. But that wasn’t the worst of it, magical creatures that had been sealed away by the gods for eons, had found a way to break free of their bonds. It wasn’t easy but the warriors found a way to keep themselves alive. While they traveled onward, the snow covered ground started to melt as the weather began to warm, what was once a frozen tundra had green grass growing beneath the melting snow. Soon it would be warm enough that wearing the furs for warmth would no longer be needed.
Along the way, Henry managed to find himself in a dangerous situation. If not for his friends, he would not have made it out alive. The slave traders somehow managed capture Henry, and they had plans on selling him and a few others for a pretty penny. But in the end he was rescued along with others, who swore loyalty to Aurelius and Gawain for rescuing them from the clutches of evil. And promised to give aid in their long quest. But that is a story for another time.
The warriors made loyal friends along the way, and the fiercest of enemies. With a fierce and unwavering resolve they had finally made it to, Desheustan. “Finally we have made it.” Aurelius exclaimed. “Welcome to, Desheustan.” the great city was vast, it had a variety of different colored huts. Even the stone that lined the streets had many colors as well, the townspeople wore odd clothing that reminded Leon of the annoying Jester that entertained King Edward at Drasal Castle. The smell of fish
being sold at the market place filled the air, which only made sense seeing how the city was close to the sea. Some would refer to Desheustan as a port town, but do not let the townspeople hear you say such things. “Gawain, take you friends and get us a room at the inn.” Aurelius said.
“What will you do?” Gawain questioned.
“I’m going to see an old friend.” Aurelius replied. “When done, I shall meet everyone back at the inn.”
“Okay, we shall see you then.” Gawain nodded.
That night Gawain and Leon awaited for Aurelius’s return. It was becoming late, and Gawain was getting impatient. He was at the point that in the back of his mind he wondered if something bad had happened to his friend. However before Gawain could make his way towards the door, Aurelius entered. “Were you about to go somewhere?” Aurelius looked at Gawain and asked.
“I was about to go and search for you.” Gawain snarled. “Why?” Aurelius questioned. “I told you that I would return.”
“It was getting late, I thought that you may have been in-” Gawain stopped mid-sentence. “No matter. Are the preparations complete?”
“Gawain, you were worried about me.” Aurelius laughed. “Shut up.” Gawain snapped.
Aurelius laughed again, “Do not worry Gawain, everything is a go for the morning.” he said. “Good.” Gawain snarled. “Now maybe I can get some rest.” he laid on the mattress made of feathers, not even bothering to remove his clothing nor boots, and drifted off to sleep. Morning came
quicker than usual, the rays of light shined through the cracks of the wooden window. Aurelius was the first to wake, right off he left to make some more preparations for their departure. Gawain and Leon stayed behind helping the others gather their things for the long voyage at sea. Again they waited for Aurelius to show, when he finally returned, they departed and headed for the port.
“Is the vessel ready to leave?” Gawain asked, walking beside Aurelius.
“No, not yet.” Aurelius answered. “The captain and his men are still loading supplies.” “So it is a trade ship then?” Gawain questioned.
“You could say that.” Aurelius replied. “Then what kind of ship is it?” Gawain said.
“The captain and his men deal in arms.” Aurelius mumbled, before walking on ahead. “They deal in smuggling goods, don’t they?” Gawain grumbled, keeping pace with Aurelius. “Yes.” Aurelius muttered under his breath.
“What did you offer them to take us out to sea?” Gawain snapped. “That doesn’t matter.” Aurelius snapped back.
While they made their way to the port Leon stayed a ways back from Aurelius and Gawain, listening to them argue with each other the whole way there. That is until Jeffery broke the silence, “Those men by the ship do not look like sailors to me. What do you think, Leon?” Jeffery whispered.
Leon studied the men’s movements, he felt uneasy watching how they took care of the ship, and also how they glared at them as they approached. “Something doesn’t feel right about this.” every muscle in his body became tense.
“What is wrong with the two of you?” Lady Catherine asked.
“Those men are not sailors.” Leon gasped. But it was to late, when he looked for a way to escape five or more men followed behind them. And even more men walking out of the ally way to the left of them holding blades in their hands. “Gawain?” Leon nervously swallowed. Gawain didn’t respond back the first time because he was still arguing with Aurelius. “Gawain.” Leon shouted, this time getting the attention of both Aurelius and Gawain.
Both men were about to shout at Leon for interrupting them, until they realized why he was shouting in the first place. “What is the meaning of this?” Gawain asked. “Why are we being
followed?”
“I haven’t the slightest.” Aurelius responded. “But I do know these men are not apart of the captains crew.”
“To the docks. Quickly.” Gawain shouted. They ran for the docks with the men behind them, and to the left of them chasing after. Their hearts raced, the sound of many footsteps could be heard catching up to them.
“We’re not going to make it.” Lady Catherine nervously shouted, feeling the men giving chase gaining on them.
The docks were now within sight, “Don’t give up. We are almost there.” Aurelius assured them. “Move out of the way, let us board the ship.” he shouted, motioning for the men standing at the docks to move out of the way. However something was a miss, instead of moving out of their way, the men drew their blades and stood fast.
“Stop.” one of the men hissed. “Don’t make us hurt you.”
Gawain did as he was told, “What are you doing, Gawain?” Aurelius shouted.
“Look around you, Aurelius.” Gawain pointed. “If we don’t stop, we die.” he flung his hands up in the air. “What have you got us in the middle of?”
“This is not my doing.” Aurelius snarled. “But I will find out the meaning of this.” he turned and faced the men at the docks. “Where is your captain?” Aurelius demanded. “He is a good friend of mine, how dare you treat us like this. I will make sure to have your heads.”
“Shut the hell up.” another grumbled. “You will find out soon enough.”
“What did you say to me, you scum?” Aurelius went to draw his blade, but Gawain stopped him. “Let me go Gawain, I will not let them talk to me in such a manner.”
“If you do that we’re all dead.” Gawain warned him, by that time the men that were chasing them had surrounded the warriors, with their blades drawn upon them.
“Keep calm everyone.” Gawain said. “All we need to do is figure out what these men want with
us.”
“Here comes our leader.” another man said. “Now you will know the true meaning of the word, pain.” the sea of men that had them surrounded parted, allowing someone that bore a heavy armor that shined brightly in the sun, and a heavy ax that he had sheathed on his back.
Gawain recognized who the armor belonged to, but it couldn’t be. “It cannot be.” Gawain gasped. “Do my eyes deceive me? Can that be the King Of Thieves? I thought he was no longer among the living.” whoever wore the armor, stood there starring a hole through Gawain, until the person removed the helmet, revealing his identity. “Kole.” Gawain snarled, and went after him. Kole’s men were many and grabbed Gawain by the arms stopping him from getting any closer.
“Look who it is.” Kole laughed. “The Academy man and the bratty kids, minus two I see. No matter, the ones I am truly after stand here before me.”
“What do you want with us?” Gawain hissed.
Kole turned, looking at his band of thieves laughing, before punching Gawain in the stomach. “That’s for costing me wealth beyond my wildest dreams.” he struck Gawain again, this time in the face. “And that’s just for the hell of it.”
Gawain crumpled over in pain but refused to fall to his knees, he took a deep breath, raised himself straight, and spat blood from his mouth at Kole in defiance. “We no longer have the pieces of the Reaper, so what are you going to do? Kill us?”
“That’s the beauty of it.” Kole smirked. “I no longer need the Reaper Blade. I have the ones who have a bounty on their heads for treason against the crown of Drasal. A big purse was promised to any who catch the traitors alive. Looks like you will still pay off for me after all. Who knows, we may even be able to gain favor from the new King.”
“And what of him?” Gawain looked at Aurelius. “He has done nothing to you, just let him go.
You have what you want.”
“I think I will keep him around for a while.” Kole grinned. “Elvish kind fetch a fair amount of coin from the slave traders.”
“I would rather die.” Aurelius spate.
Kole reached out grabbing Aurelius by the hair of the head, yanking him back, “I can make that happen if you wish it.” he warned, holding a knife up to Aurelius’s throat. “But I won’t.” he released the grip he had on Aurelius’s hair and shoved him backwards. “Take them away.” Kole commanded. “I have to visit with Captain Bosch, and thank him for such a fine gift.” he said before walking away.
Aurelius couldn’t believe his ears, Could it be so? Did my friend of many a year turn us over to these bandit swine? Aurelius closed his eyes in disbelief. There is no way to explain it, Bosch sold us out, and he will die by my hand, he felt the sharp tip of blade poke at his back. “Move.” one of the bandits ordered.
Aurelius sighed and did as he was told, where he and the others were being lead only time would tell. It was unclear what would happen next for the warriors. Would they find a way to break free? Will Leon be able to get the amulet to the Tomb Of Carnage when the moon and the sun become one? Perhaps it is truly over for the warriors, and the only fate that awaits them now, is to be beheaded by King Alistair’s executioner. Only time will tell.
King Alistair sat in his throne room, with Caine by his side. The sounds of footsteps drummed through the great hall, it sounded as though a hundred men wearing clad armor were making their way towards them. Alistair never moved from his throne, the only motion he made was the faint smile that curled his lips. With force the the throne room doors burst open, revealing the Dark Knights. These dark and ominous foes, wearing black armor flooded the throne room. You could see the nervousness in Caine’s eyes, but not Alistair. He finally stood from his throne welcoming the new guests, “My loyal soldiers have finally arrived.” Alistair maniacally laughed.
“We are loyal to he who wields the dark power.” the one that lead the charge responded, his voice was dark, and inhuman. “Not a puny human like yourself.”
Alistair unsheathed the Reaper Blade and held it up in the air, “I control the dark powers of the Reaper Blade. You will bow down to me, and do my bidding.” he demanded. The Dark Knights had no choice but to do as Alistair commanded, for the one that controlled the Reaper Blade controlled them. Each one of the Dark Knights knelt down before their new Dark Lord.
THE END
