4 saw his expression and chuckled.
“Haha. You can’t relate.” I said,
He grimaced. “Yeah. But I had seen you and the kids and your dynamics together. It would not be hard to hazard a guess. Don’t worry, the kids won’t love you less even after their dad showed up.” He assured me.
It’s not what I meant, but maybe that is how it looks to others.
We drank wine. Listen to the music that the venue offered, and when the desert came, we both passed up.
“I am sure you still have a ton to do at home?” I asked when he did not prolong our
dinner.
“Yes. The client that called me just now wanted to see me immediately,”
That had me bolting up from my seat.
“Why didn’t you tell me? You know that I will always understand.”
“He can wait. Tonight was the only time we were alone together. I wanted to savor the moment because I don’t think there will ever be a next time.”
There was a wistfulness in his tone that got me.
“Anthony…” I don’t know what to say.
“It’s alright. I’ll get by.” He assured me.
“You see, I am quite a catch and have a string of girls waiting for me to notice them.” He was making things light, but I knew how much this night saddened him.
We stared at each other’s eyes.
“Thank you.” I finally managed, and we got out of the restaurant.
Anthony helped me to the car. Then we drove in silence.
We reached our house in no time.
The street where the house is located is deserted. The house, too, is dark, except for the light that comes from the streetlamps illuminating it.
“So?” Anthony turned in my direction while I was unbuckling my seatbelt.

Anthony unstrapped his seatbelt before going out of the car. I waited for him to open the door for me. That’s the least I could do, allow him this much.
He’s a good friend, after all, and a good man.
“Good night, Brie. See you tomorrow.” He said and waved me goodbye.
I watched as he got back to his car and revved the engine.
We exchanged our final waves, and he was gone.
I was about to get to the house when someone caught my arms.
“Noah…” My breath hitched when I saw the expression on his face as he dragged me across the street to the house directly opposite ours.
He dragged me inside.
I was too stunned to realize what he was doing, and when it finally dawned on me, I started struggling to escape his manacling hold.
“Let go!” I cried and shook my arm to slacken his hold.
Noah took advantage of my preoccupation to pull me closer. His tug surprised me as it brought our noses closer.
“Why didn’t you tell me Britney went to your office today?” He hissed.
