Chapter 29
Michalei felt like he had been walking for hours. Sephiroth led them past the fields and closer to Avalon. They were about to cross over into the city when they passed the next bend in the road. That’s when the ground beneath them began to rumble.
“No, no, no,” Sephiroth called out over the howling wind.
“What is it?” Michalei asked as he took off running.
Michalei raced after Sephiroth. As they came around the corner they were met by the flaming pillar of fire. Michalei stared at it with a concerned look upon his face as the wonder was quickly replaced with dread.
“Kira raised the guardians.” Sephiroth said as they stared down the monster before them.
“By the goddess,” Michalei hissed. “I had no idea.”
“Use caution as we approach. If it views you as a threat it will destroy you.” Sephiroth stated and then walked forward.
“Yeah,” Michalei nodded and hung back not wanting to chance it.
“Hail guardian of the south.” Sephiroth said as he stood before it.
“I am king Sephiroth, father of queen Kira, and regent ruler of Avalon. I seek passage to my city.” Sephiroth said to it.
“You,” It hissed and spit fire. “Father of Kira, are king no more.” It said.
“What? No,” Michalei said as he came forward.
Sephiroth closed his eyes and bowed his head and said. “I understand. Let me pass so I may address my daughter.”
“You may pass.” It hissed. “He may not.”
Sephiroth turned to Michalei, “I’m sorry.” He said as he slowly backed toward the guardian.
“No!” Michalei howled and rushed at him.
It was all in vain. Sephiroth disappeared into the flames. Michalei shielded his face and backed away from the inferno. There was no way he was getting through. He resolved himself to find another way, opened the portal and was gone.
