Chapter 7
Chapter7
The next morning, Sally went to the legal office. Since she’d recently entered the firm, she was still very busy. However, with Scarlet at home taking care of her children, her mind was
much more at ease.
“Didn’t you hear? Justice Law Firm is going to be acquired.”
“I just found out this morning too. The director came by early in the morning. I also saw the new boss with him, the one who‘ s buying our firm.”
As soon as she entered, her ears were immediately struck with the voices of her colleagues.
When they caught sight of her approaching, they wasted no time in dispersing and returning to their workstations.
“Joyce, the boss is back. He wants you to come by his office.” Assistant Kim sidled up to her and delivered her message.
Sally frowned, her eyebrows pinching together. On her first day of work, after she got hired, she’d been told that he wouldn’t return until tomorrow night. Why was he back so early?
Still full of doubt, she lightly rapped on the office door.

“Come in.”
A man’s strained voice sounded from inside.
Sally pushed open the door and walked in. The moment she entered, she was hit by a powerful aura emanating from the desk. She noticed her boss standing in front of his table while another man occupied the chair behind the desk. He’d
swiveled around so that his back was to her, keeping his face obscured.
A third man was standing off to the side. He was dressed in a well–fitting suit with matching leather shoes, and he had a good–natured appearance.
Something about him seemed familiar, but she couldn’t quite place where she’d seen him before.
“Joyce, you’re here.”
Her boss‘ voice pulled her attention back to the current
situation.
“Yes, sir. What did you want from me?”
“Starting today, Justice Law Firm will no longer be operating under me. I’ve decided to transfer the company to ZK
International. From now on, all of our firm’s affairs will be managed by them.”

Sally’s expression soured as the shocking news hit her. When she turned back to the man in the suit, she suddenly
remembered who he was.
Alex: Howard’s special administrative assistant.
In addition, he was also his most trusted friend and advisor.
She’d met him here and there during the few times he wasn’t away from Bomsville for business.
It had been a long time though. Whatever impressions they’d had of each other had long faded away.
She turned her attention to the man leaning back in her boss‘
chair.
Then could he be… Howard?
Her heart clenched violently, its previously disturbed lake now a tidal wave as this realization slammed into her.
She nervously picked at the edge of her shirt with deceptively steady hands.
The chair began to move, slowly turning to face her.

Yesterday’s encounter flashed through her mind.
Please don’t let it be Howard.

Her prayers went unanswered though as his indifferent expression appeared before her. She was certain that her heartbeat had come to a stop.
“Joyce?” His thin lips parted with amusement, their corners raised in a mocking gesture.
Without her realizing it, Alex and her boss had already left the office, leaving the two of them alone.
Howard stood up and propped his hands against his desk. Bracing himself against the edge, he casually leaned forward until he was closer to Sally.
“Why didn’t I know that you had another identity, Sally?”
No wonder he couldn’t find her during those six years. He’d applied all of his efforts and resources, but he came up empty time and time again.
So it turned out that she’d changed her name.

This single thought sent a surge of anger throughout him.
Sally tugged on the corner of her coat and took a step back, attempting to place more distance between them.
She succeeded in dampening the suffocating atmosphere from his proximity.
“Mr. Logan, did you deliberately buy Justice Law Firm because of me?”
Before she’d entered this company, she’d done some research on it.
Although it wasn’t the largest or most notable in Bomsville, it still had an impressive number of successful cases.
It helped that the owner was also a gold–medal lawyer who’d never lost a case so far.
The firm was prosperous enough to offer her a high salary upon hiring her, and she knew that they had more than enough funds to manage their cases. Having it get acquired so suddenly should’ve been an impossible event.
Unless… someone with a lot of power decided to make an offer that Justice Law Firm couldn’t refuse.

The corner of Howard’s lips hooked up into a self–satisfied sneer. He flicked the business card he’d picked up yesterday across the desk.
As soon as Sally spotted her card, she understood what had happened.
“Mr. Logan, we’ve all got different lives right now. Isn’t it better to let the past stay in the past?”
If it hadn’t been for her desire to avenge her aunt and third child, she would’ve never returned and crossed paths with
Howard.
“So I should just let it all go?” His eyes flashed dangerously, and his hands curled into fists.
“You’re the one who made me into a joke, Sally, and yet you’ve got the nerve to think we can just move on.”
Each word fell from his mouth like venom from a snake’s fangs.
Sally knew that she was the one at fault. She’d caused him to hate himself. After all, he was nothing if not prideful. When she’d called things off on the day before the wedding, many important business people had been watching Howard’s humiliation.

“I’m really sorry.” She lowered her head in guilt.
Whoosh!
Suddenly, Howard lunged forward and grabbed onto her collar, roughly yanking her toward him. His sharp eyes bore into her.
“In the beginning, weren’t you in love with me? Weren’t you over the moon to get married, hm?”
She didn’t meet his eyes, which flickered with an angry light.
“Didn’t you take pride in being a good speaker? Didn’t you get on my grandmother’s good side? Why aren’t you saying. anything right now?” His grip on her shirt tightened.
If it wasn’t for her, his grandmother wouldn’t have arranged this marriage to happen.
If it wasn’t for her, Grace wouldn’t have been able to trick him into having Rina.
If it wasn’t for her, Rina wouldn’t be struggling so much with her condition.
For six years, he’d been set on tracking down Sally and burying her alive for what she’d done.

Now that she was finally in front of him, though, he couldn’t bring himself to act.
He hated what he was feeling. Very much.
“Howard, I’m very sorry.”
She didn’t know what else to say except that she was sorry over and over again.
“Sorry?‘ Do you think that single word is enough to undo the damage you did?” He forcefully shoved her away from him, the fire in his eyes slowly fading. He slumped back into the chair. His careless posture did nothing to dampen the sheer power radiating from him.
“Sally, you knew and loved me, but you let me suffer through this nonsense. You owe me. You–You owe me a hundred
times over.”
She stumbled backward, taking unsteady steps until her legs gave out and spilled her onto the floor.
Howard regarded her disheveled appearance and snorted coldly. He pulled out a file from the desk and tossed it in front of where she sat.
“You’re in charge of this case. I want to see results within a week.”

Sally knelt forward and scooped up the file. Once she opened it and glanced at its contents, she felt her brow furrow. “Medical malpractice?”
“What? Is there a problem?” Howard’s lips curled into a
contemptuous sneer.
She reined in the emotions threatening to spill out. “No.”
Even if she did have a problem with this, he wouldn’t let her back out of taking responsibility for her actions.
Unfortunately, she knew that a case that dealt with medical malpractice was one of the most difficult ones to settle.
Although the hospital could provide evidence that they didn’t administer any treatments responsible for the death, it wouldn’t change the fact that the patient DID die while in their hands. Some families even try to cause more trouble, going as far as to hire doctors to interfere in hospitals.
In the end, it was all a ploy to get a payout.
Most of the people coming in with medical issues were troublemakers who were difficult to deal with.
Howard was probably dumping this case on her to give her a hard time.

“Please have Joyce‘ the gold–medal lawyer go out and inform everyone that there’ll be a meeting in fifteen minutes.”
“Yes, sir!” Sally answered before quickly turning to leave the office.
As Howard stared at her departing back, he clenched and unclenched the fingers resting atop the desk. His usually clear eyes had muddied, obscured by a cloud of darkness.
