"Do you...do you know where she went? When did she leave?" His voice was

hoarse.

The gardeners shook their heads. "She left early this morning, Mr. Sterling.

With a suitcase. We don't know where she went."

Left? Where could she have gone? His mind raced. Her parents were remarried, with families of their own. She wouldn't go to them.

He called her friends, his voice frantic. "Hello? It's Silas Sterling. Is Amy with "Silas? What are you talking about? Why would she be here?"

The same conversation repeated itself over and over. He even called his own friends. No one knew where she was.

Despair washed over him. He felt like he was drowning, pulled under by the

icy current of her absence. She was his everything, the very air he breathed. To lose her was to lose a part of himself.

"Amy, please. Stop playing games. I need you." His voice broke.

Then he remembered. He raced upstairs to his study. He tore off the sticky note that read "Open in 2 weeks."

He held the gift box, a flicker of hope in his eyes. Maybe she left me a

message.

A clue.

He tore off the wrapping, his hands trembling. Inside, nestled in tissue paper, were the divorce papers. Her signature was clear and bold. chair.

"No. No, this can't be..." He crumpled the papers in his fist, sinking into his "Amy loves me. She wouldn't leave. Someone switched the gifts! Someone's playing a cruel joke!"

He summoned the staff, demanding to know who had touched the gift.

"Mr. Sterling, we only clean. We wouldn't touch your things without

permission!"

"Yes, sir. You can check the security cameras. You'll see we haven't been near your study."

Every member of the staff denied touching the box.

Silas still refused to believe it. He watched the security footage,

fast-forwarding through the days. Deep down, he knew. This was the box Amy

had given him. He'd been clinging to denial, a desperate attempt to stave off the inevitable.

The half-hour of footage felt like an eternity. He'd questioned the staff,

hoping for some other explanation, some reason to believe that Amy hadn't truly left him.

But the truth was undeniable. He watched her sign the papers, her hand

steady and resolute. She was done. She was leaving him.

But why?

He replayed every interaction they'd had in the past few weeks, searching for

answers. The subtle signs, once overlooked, now screamed at him.
