Julia arrived home. It was December 28th. There were only three days left. She packed her new captain's uniform, badge, and epaulets. She felt relieved.

After a bath, she was about

to sleep when Shaw rushed in with panic. "Julia, the flight schedule shows a different co-pilot flying with me tomorrow." Julia used her prepared excuse."I haven't been feeling well, so I took a few days off." She wouldn't tell him she was leaving and she wouldn't fly that route again. Shaw relaxed slightly. "That's good. I thought you didn't want to be my co-pilot anymore." He knelt, taking her hand. "We promised to fly together forever. You can't lie to me..." His sincerity pierced her heart. He said she couldn't lie, yet he'd lied to her repeatedly. If he loved her, why would he cheat on her with Sierra?

She closed her eyes.

"Okay," she whispered. Her first and last lie to him.

Shaw felt relieved. He leaned in to kiss her forehead, but she moved away, She'd been so cold to him lately.

He felt a pang

of fear.

"Julia, when this flight is over, it's New Year's. Let's go to Japan to celebrate. What do you Julia shook her head."No."

"Then let's go to the Arctic Circle! We can see the Northern Lights, and no one will bother us." Julia still refused. He used to take her far away for the new year so that no one would find out they were dating. She didn't want to go anywhere, though. She wanted to wait for her assignment.

Seeing him frown, she changed her mind."Let's go to Navy Pier on New Year's Eve and take some pictures."

She wanted a memento before leaving Chicago.

Shaw was surprised."Why

Japan or

Arctic

would be

better."

Seeing his reluctance, she said, "You'll be the photographer. I'm not taking pictures with you."

She wouldn't keep any photos of him.

Shaw's flickered."After the New Year, at the captain's awards ceremony, I'll tell everyone you're my girlfriend. Just wait a little longer."

Julia closed her eyes. "Go take a shower. It's late."

Hearing the shower, she felt a dampness in her heart. She'd waited five years. She wouldn't wait

anymore.

December 31st. One day left. Julia put on a red dress and a red cape. She waited for Shaw at Navy Pier. But he didn't come.

She called him. His voice was hoarse.

"Julia, I have an emergency at the airport. I'll be there later..."

The call ended. She opened Instagram; Sierra had a new post.
