Chapter 42
Frozen in place I contemplated what to do. I couldn't stay in this place, I only had to wait ten minutes and Oliver would be home. I couldn't take the chance of trying to fight him off, what if he hurt my babies? The back door. Turning quickly, I caught myself on the wall as I started to lean too far forward and almost hit the wall. I turned to head deeper into the house, if I could just make it to the office I could get to the back door. I barely paused to make sure I was
steady before running down the hall..
I heard measured, but sure footsteps following me, staying the same pace. A flare of hope rose in me as I thought I may have a chance to make it to the back door. I entered the office and darted for the back door.
Quickly unlocking it I tried to push it open. I moved an inch and stopped. It was blocked. Panic flared again and bile rose up my throat. This was planned, he knew I would try for here, that's why he didn't speed up. I darted through the second doorway that would put me in the hall across from the basement.
Reaching the door, I pulled it open and quickly made my way down the stairs, praying that I wouldn't fall and hurt myself or the babies. Making it to the bottom of the stairs I ran for the door to the walkin part of the basement that led to the back yard. I unlocked the door, but it wouldn't budge.
I wanted to scream and cry and break something, but I took a slow measured breath. I heard his footsteps on the stairs. I couldn't get out, and I couldn't fight him. A thought popped into my head. The gun safe was in the office. I stepped into the shadows of the bathroom, but left the door open. I heard his steps as he stepped off the bottom stair. I pressed myself in the corner, and put my hands over my mouth, trying to silence my ragged breathing.
It seemed like hours as he approached the bathroom. I held my breath, freezing in place, as I heard him move by the doorway. I heard him enter the gym and I darted for the stairs. I made it to the top two stairs when I lost my footing and fell, landing on my knee on the edge of the stair.
Pain flared from the spot, but I knew I couldn't stop. Pushing myself back to my feet, and heard him start on the top stair. Moving quickly I got to the main floor and slammed the door shut, darting for the office. I slammed that door shut too and raced for Oliver's desk.
I slid open the bottom draw, where he kept the gun safe. I entered the code and placed my finger on the biometric part of the top. Come on, come on, I chanted in my head, waiting for the click that would let me in. It never came. I felt a hand on my ankle, as my leg shot out from under me. A cry was torn from my throat as I shot my hands out to catch myself so I wouldn't land on my belly. I managed to turn to my side just before my body hit the floor. Pain radiated from my shoulder as it hit the hardwood flooring. He pulled my legs out straight and stradled them. He pushed my shoulders down, and pulled up my shirt. Panic seized me as I realized his intentions. "No, stop, please don't." I said, clawing at his arms.
I heard the slap of his hand against my face before I felt the pain. Instinctively my hands went to the eye he had slapped. He took the opportunity to pull my pants off of me. He only got the band below my belly before I realized he was moving forward. I grunted as I tried to fight him off, but the more I wiggled and tried to stop him the faster my pants came down.
"Stop fighting." A deep gravelly voice sounded out from over me.
He got them to my ankles and was working on his pants when I was able to get one leg free. I brought it up as far as I could and kicked him in the chest, causing him to fall backwards. Quickly turning over I pushed myself to my feet, realizing at some point I still had underwear on.
I had just gotten upright when his hand caught my ankle, tripping me. My head came down and hit the corner of the desk, blinding pain flared through my head. I blinked, trying to stop the tunnel vision that was closing in on me. "I said to stop fighting, bitch." He growled as he drew back, his fist closed.
Pain exploded on the side of my face. Another hit came from the opposite side landing with a crunch on my nose. My head whipped back, and I gasped in pain. Something hit the back of my throat and I coughed in response. A metallic taste covered my tongue. My brain registered that it was from my nose, and I blinked my eyes trying to clear my vision.
I heard yelling but couldn't make out what was being said. A hand touched my shoulder and I flinched away. The hand paused, and then I felt it on my shoulders. My eyelids started to droop.
"Jocelyn, stay with me, darling. Oliver will be here in a second. Hold on, this may hurt." Sean's voice drifted over me.
Hurt, no, please don't let it hurt, I thought. I forced my eyes open, blinking at the brightness. I groaned as my body was shifted to my side.
"Sam, get a blanket so we can cover her and keep her warm." Sean's voice filled my ears again.
I reached out, and he grabbed my hand, holding it. My eyelids drooped again.
"Where's those eyes I can lose myself in?" Sean asked, shifting down my body.
I gripped his hand afraid he'd leave. He gripped tighter, his other hand going over mine as he sat by my thighs.
"Fuck, sugar, let me see." Oliver's voice was steady and soothing.
A bright light shined in my eyes, I tried to squint but it felt like my eyelid was stuck. Then hands felt around my head before coming to face. I gasped when they pressed on my cheeks, and someone held my arms down, so I couldn't bring them to my face.
"Sorry, sugar, I had to check it out." Oliver's calm voice reached my ears as my vision turned spotty. "Hey, stay with me, Josie." He said sharply, pulling my attention to him.
"Finally, get her on there so we can stabilize her better. She'll be a load and go, I can finish on the bus. Sweetheart we are going to get you on the backboard, it's going to be uncomfortable."
My vision and hearing suddenly became sharp and crisp. I felt like all of a sudden was thrown back into reality. Pain wracked my body, my head pounding the worst. I gasped at the intensity, and tried to pull away.
"Hey, stay still, sugar. We have to roll you on your back to get you strapped on and then we'll put you back on your side. We'll try to be gentle." Oliver said as they laid on my back.
I groaned as they laid me over and then back on my side, the movement causing pain so sharp I was seeing stars. It only took a moment to get the straps done and then they put me on a stretcher. I lost Sean's hand and I searched for, Oliver noticed and grasped my hand.
"I've got you, sugar. I'm not leaving." He reassured me.
We were out of the house, and I squinted at the brightness of the setting sun. I closed my eyes, trying to block the brightness.
"Stay with me, don't go to sleep." Oliver scolded.
"Not sleeping, just bright." I mumbled.
"You don't know how nice it is to hear you speak clearly." Oliver said, kissing the back of my hand.
I winced as they loaded me into the ambulance. My eyes slowly adjusted to the still bright lights. I could hear equipment being moved, and I felt them attaching monitors and a blood pressure cuff to me. Soon a beeping filled the ambulance as they tracked my vital signs.
"Get the babies on monitor-she's having twins. I want two heartbeats tracing. I want the full OB monitor, make sure she's not contracting." Oliver ordered from my head.
I felt my clothing move and gel being put on, then the monitors being placed. Fear filled me, my girls, I hadn't been paying attention, have they moved? I couldn't remember feeling them, I had been so focused on escaping and what was happening I hadn't paid attention. Had they been hurt?
The ambulance was quiet as we all waited for their heartbeats to be found. The silence was dragging, and my fear was increasing. Then suddenly a whooshing filled the ambulance, and then another. Two heartbeats, no contractions. We were still safe.
"Josie, I'm going to give you something for the pain. It won't take it all away, but it will help. We are almost there." Oliver said as he took notes.
We rolled to a stop and the doors opened, and I winced as they unloaded the stretcher from the ambulance. I heard Oliver giving off numbers and information about what they had done so far. He started giving orders when a tall doctor grabbed his arm.
"We got this. You know you can't run this. I'll let you stay in the room, but out of the way. If you interfere I'll boot you faster than you think possible." A doctor said as Oliver nodded.
Doctors worked fast, but soon they had cleared the most important things and I was allowed to sit up and be without a collar. Slowly, the number of people decreased as they each ruled out the major complications. As they cleared the room, Oliver instantly stepped to the bedside, pulling a chair with him. The doctor excused himself so he could grab supplies and promised to be back quickly.
He grabbed my hand and I was suddenly overwhelmed with emotions and I felt tears falling. Oliver's hand came to my cheek, his thumb moving gently as he wiped tears away. Worry filled his face.
"Oh, sugar. I'm so sorry this happened. I wish I could go back in time." He said softly.
I grabbed his other hand and squeezed it, not sure what to say. We sat together in silence, just being together as we each sorted through our thoughts. It was an intense silence, and I was about to say something when the doctor entered the room again.
"I'm going to suture your cut on your forehead, and then the plastic surgeon will meet you in the OB ward to treat your nose. We want to keep you for a few days to make sure you and your babies are ok to be sent home." The doctor said with a warm smile.
"Thanks, Paul." Oliver said, stepping to my other side so the doctor has access to my head wound.
The doctor nodded and numbed the area before starting to suture. After a bit he was done.
"Alright, it took ten sutures, they'll need to come out in about 10 days. Oliver can do that though, so no need to come back for that. The nurse will be with you shortly to take you upstairs when your room is ready. Good luck, Josie." He said as he turned to leave.
It wasn't long before we were getting settled in the OB ward. Exhaustion hit me in a sudden wave while Oliver sat beside me holding my hand, and texting others updates. It wasn't long before I was pulled into a restless sleep.
