Robbery In Progress

Chapter Chapter Ten

*Kelsey*

This whole apologizing thing was way harder than I was expecting. Mostly because this apology wasn't just going to be a 'hey sorry' but I would actually have to explain why I got upset, which means I'd have to admit what my expectations of her were. *Which was terrifying.*

"Right, yeah I bet you do." I picked at one of my fingernails nervously under the table as I sat down at one of her bar stools. "So, sorry I got mad at you and kind of acted like a bitch about it."

Emma nodded in response for a minute before responding, "I have to be honest with you, I have no idea what I did wrong."

"That's part of why I have to apologize. You didn't really do anything wrong. You just...how do I put this?" I paused as I tried to think of a way to say this without making it a whole thing and sighed when I came up short. "When you called it a one night stand, it reminded me that you left. And it made it clear to me that you really weren't looking for anything more from me. Which isn't where I was at with things, but that's on me. I shouldn't be getting upset at you for that." She seemed to take all this in for a few seconds, maybe trying to absorb the impact of the bomb that I just dropped on her doorstep. *What was I even doing here?*

I stood up and started to head towards her door. This was a mistake. "Anyway, I just wanted to apologize and I did so I'll just get out of your hair now."

"Kelsey," she replied. I didn't respond and I could hear her footsteps behind me but I didn't stop. I made it all the way to the door before she caught up with me. Before I could open the door, she grabbed my hand and pulled me back toward her. Taking advantage of my surprise, she stepped closer and kissed me. It was supposed to be quick but the minute we connected, I melted against her.

Needless to say that spark from that first night was not gone, in fact it might be getting stronger because I felt like I was on fire. *From a kiss*. As she slipped an arm around my waist and snaked her free hand up to the back of my neck, I instinctually wrapped my arms around her neck. When I pushed for more access, she easily opened for me. *How could she walk out on this? It was so perfect.* I've kissed, kind of a lot of people, men and women, but nothing, *nothing*, felt quite like it did with Emma. Which terrified me, but it was also exhilarating. She was a drug I couldn't get enough off.

Slowly, she withdrew. I was disappointed but I could see her reluctance, and thankfully she didn't go far. Her arm stayed in place around my waist and she rested her forehead against mine. We stood there for a few minutes, both just catching our breath while we looked at each other.

Eventually, she spoke, "I've never slept with someone I'd just met before. I left because it was the easier thing to do. And I called it a one night stand because I didn't know what else to call it. I didn't want to assume that there would be a repeat performance."

I instantly felt better about everything I had been overthinking about for the past week. She was struggling with whatever this was too. *Thank God I wasn't alone in that.* I resisted the urge to pull her back in at that thought. Or least, I attempted to resist.

"That is the best reason I've heard yet for leaving the morning after," I replied, going in for another mind blowing kiss. But she dodged me.

"Wait a minute, how many reasons have you gotten?" The set in her jaw and the pulled together eyebrows set off a few alarm bells in my head. I could see her eyes turning back to their normal icy blue color. I already missed the dark blue look in her eyes from a few moments before.

"Are you...jealous?" I teased her. The scowl on her face was gone instantly, replaced with shock.

"What? No, of course not." Her denial was instant and it made me smile. Before I could say anything more though, she continued talking, "did you want to watch the rest of this sitcom episode with me? I was in the middle of it when you stopped by." I could tell she was trying to change the subject but I let her have this one.

"Sure, that sounds great. I don't remember the last time I've enjoyed a good sitcom." She stepped back and headed towards her living room and I instantly missed the warmth her closeness provided. I followed after her and joined her on the couch as she started the episode back up. "Oh, I love this show. I'm so far behind on it."

"Good thing it's a Friday night and we have all the time in the world to catch you up." She smiled at me as she said it and I couldn't help but smile back. This girl was infectious. What started as a ten to twenty minute commitment somehow turned into an all night binge watch session. As the episodes flew by and we laughed along, we slowly got more comfortable just sitting next to each other. And at some point in the night, Emma produced a blanket for us to warm up under. The blanket was plenty big but I used it as an excuse to get closer to her.

It didn't take too long for us to shift from sitting to lying down, and from lying down to drifting off together on the couch while the tv show played in the background.

This night did not go how I expected it, to say the least, but it was the most fun I had had in a while so I couldn't complain.

*Emma*

I woke up to my phone going off. And someone else's phone going off. *That's weird,* I thought before I was able to shake the cobwebs of sleep away and realized where I was. Sleeping on my couch, with Kelsey. Who came over last night to apologize. *Did not see that coming.* I smiled at her sleeping form, being drawn back into the bubble of last night when our phones went off again.

This time, she started to stir and I sighed, unsure of what the harsh light of day would bring. I tried my best to extract myself from the couch without jarring her and then I grabbed my phone to answer a few steps away.

“Hello?” I asked, answering without even checking the caller ID. That's what happens when you answer the phone while you're still waking up.

"Hey, Harrison. Are you just waking up? It's almost 10:30." It was Drew. *Of course.*

"Yeah, I stayed up late. Sue me. What do you want?" I asked him as I registered Kelsey getting up and answering her own phone. The fact that they were both ringing at the same time should have been a clue in for me. But here we are. "Another robbery," he announced. That certainly caught my attention. And when I turned to Kelsey, I could tell she just received the same news.

"You're kidding."

"I'm not. I already emailed you the information. Detective Lawson and Collins are being called in again too.'

"I figured as much. I'll let you know when I get there," with that I hung up and waited for Kelsey to get off the phone as well.

"You happen to have an extra tooth brush laying around I could borrow? Seems as though I have to work today." I felt relief wash through me at that. *We're okay, phew.*

"I think I have a few from dentist visits that are laying around. Let me see what I can find." I walked towards the bathroom with her on my tail. "Sorry you don't have time to go back to your place and get ready."

"We probably should have seen this coming, Saturdays seem to be a theme with them." I located a toothbrush and held it up triumphantly before I handing it over. "And you have an extra tooth brush so I can't be too upset."

"It's hard to argue with logic like that. I'm going to get changed, feel free to use anything you need." She thanked me and I smiled in response before retreating from the bathroom and into my bedroom. We didn't have a ton of time to spare before we needed to get to the bank so I tried not to dawdle but I also wanted to give her some space. So after I changed I went into the kitchen to make us both a cup of coffee. I was about half way through my cup when she came out of the bathroom.

"I made coffee. Just give me five minutes and then I'll be ready," I told her as I headed towards the bathroom to brush my teeth and get my hair under control as quickly as possible.

Walking out the door with her to a go to a crime scene felt so domestic and so *right*. It was terrifying.
