Time flew by, and soon the little one turned five.

Every year, Father and Mason’s mother visited, not only to see him but also to enjoy a leisurely break.

The guesthouse business was neither booming nor failing, at least, it provided a steady income, ensuring that Luca and I lived comfortably.

The little boy, named Luca Bearing,

affectionately called Luca, shared my surname.

For his mental well–being, I told him that Mason had gone to heaven.

“Ulrica, are you really not going to forgive

Mason again? For the past five years, he has worked hard and refrained from any misdeeds. His heart belongs only to you and Luca, he truly regrets his actions,” Mason’s mother said, sensing my indifference and pressing on..

“Besides, the child is still young and needs a father as he grows up. You can’t disregard his needs. A reformed man is worth more than gold. Why not be brave one more time?”

No matter how mischievous my son was, he was still my flesh and blood. They might forgive Mason, but I could not. He simply didn’t deserve it.

Watching Luca play with the dog, I saw no signs of him needing a father.

I chose not to respond and instead smiled,

shifting the topic. “Luca, why don’t you take your grandparents out for a walk?”

“Okay,” he replied eagerly, accompanied by our big dog, Cola, as they frolicked together.

That evening, Luca approached me with a milk carton. “Mom, what kind of person is my dad?”

Sighing, I realized their presence had indeed

influenced the child.

After a moment’s thought, I knelt down and replied earnestly, “He’s not a very good person, like the scoundrel in the drama I watched.”

“Oh, I see,” he nodded, still trying to grasp the concept. Then he asked, “Mom, I’m not a little scoundrel, am I?”

“No, you’re a little angel.” I laughed and pinched his chubby cheeks.

Who would have thought that the fragile little boy who almost didn’t survive would now be so lively?

After Mason’s parents left, my life returned to tranquility.

Occasionally, I felt as though someone was watching me, but whenever I turned around, there was nothing there.

This feeling persisted for a week until I unexpectedly discovered an expensive LEGO set in Luca’s possession, leading me to infer Mason’s involvement.

That irritating man seemed to linger like a

ghost.

Fueled by anger, I dialed the long–blocked number.

“Ulrica,” Mason’s tone was overly accommodating.

“Mason, how can you be so shameless? Now that your first love is gone, you remember this insignificant mosquito blood? Don’t you have any shame?”

“It’s not like that. I just wanted to see how you and the child are doing,” he stammered.

“Not needed.”

“Ulrica, I was wrong. I didn’t foresee things turning out this way. I didn’t have the heart to

refuse her since she has so little time left. I truly didn’t realize how hard it would be for you. I’m so sorry,” he sobbed, his voice trembling.

I didn’t want to listen to his contrition, he was just a piece of shit.

“Don’t spew nonsense. Stay away from my son. I’m afraid you’ll corrupt him. My clever, sensible child–if anything happens because of you, I won’t let you off easily.”

After this warning, I hung up and blocked him again.

On the day Mason left, he called to ask if he could see Luca.

“Ulrica, after this meeting, I promise I won’t bother you again and will restart my life. Just

one meeting for peace, you’re too smart to refuse, right?”

Though reluctant, I preferred that fleeting discomfort over the future I wanted–a life

devoid of Mason.

The meeting was arranged at the airport.

Seeing Mason after five years, he looked pale, like a walking corpse.

Upon spotting Luca, he crouched down, cautiously asking, “Can I hug you?”

Luca, noticing my nod, pouted and agreed.

“Just a little hug. You smell bad, like Uncle Wang from the village. Not pleasant at all.”

Mason smiled awkwardly at that.

As he drew closer, I detected a strong smell of alcohol on him–no wonder Luca was resistant.

“Since we’ve met, I won’t keep you. I wish you success in the future and safe travels.”

I took Luca’s hand and walked leisurely out of the airport. As for Mason, he would now be a stranger.
