It was relatively easy to leave during the shift change at midnight. We snuck past the guards, backpacks on our backs, and silently slunk into the woods, avoiding anything that might crack underneath our feet or make a noise that would give us away. I didn't start breathing easier until we had left the Blood Moon Territory and headed into neutral, my breathing. returning to normal while Xavier straightened his shoulders and peered around him with wary eyes. Both of us remained
our guard, knowing that anybody or anything could be in the forest, acknowledging that until we marle it back to the pack safely, we would remain in danger.
"Tell me again why we can't just drive to this coven?" I asked lightly, trying to distract myself.
It sure would be easier and a lot quicker, I thought with a groan, Xavier shot me a look and then sighed. "Because the coven lives in the depths of the forest, and you have to go through a cave in order to get to their location. We could shift into wolf form, but I want to leave that until it's absolutely necessary and conserve our energy" he added tightly as we walked, our eyesight luckily, a lot more keen than the average human due to our shifter DŇA.
"Still, walking for this long I grimaced, picturing the length of the hike, while Xavier just shot me a grin, looking far more
carefree
"Think of it as an extra long hike" he suggested brightly as I gave a sarcastic laugh.
"Right, a long hike that involved the danger or discovery, possible rogues, and the loss of our lives," I told him dryly Sounds perfect," I said with a heavy dose of amusement.
He winked "It's an adventure" he teased, and I laughed for real this time, slipping and then quickly catching my balance as Xavier put out his arm around my waist and righted me. "Thanks" I breathed, staring deeply into his eyes and feeling my heart skip a beat, my throat closing "I almost fell" 1 admitted "I wasn't watching properly where I was going."
He let go, a reluctant expression on his face. I felt slightly disappointed at the loss of contact from my mate. "We should keep walking and find someplace to bunker down and find shelter during the heat of the day. It's far easier to travel during the night when it's cooler and when there are far fewer rogues wandering about. We should easily make a big dent in our travel if we keep walking as fast as we are" he added with confidence.
I nodded, keeping a close distance behind him as he expertly began to lead me in the direction of the witch's coven that we were seeking. We traipsed in silence, our heads howed low, both of us lost in our thoughts. My mind flashed back to Xander who remained at the pack house, wondering if he would be okay or if he would be able to keep Heather and Isabelle Preoccupied during our absence. If they discovered us missing. I shook my head, feeling grim. It didn't bear thinking what they might do. I worried for my other mate. Mate will be fine, my wolf said quietly, Xander is smart and capable. He was a good choice to leave behind. Trust him she advised as I walked with my head down low. You might be surprised at how much he takes control.
I said nothing. I bit my lip and stepped over a large fallen tree trunk, Xavier waiting patiently over the other side to help me. gently holding my hand and then turning back around without a word. I know that it's going to seem like a long few days at this rate, but I don't want to bother Xavier while he's lost in thought either. It's clear that he's thinking and I'm laying bets he's worried about his brother, although he's doing his best to hide it.
"Xander is going to be okay," I tell him, trying to reassure myself at the same time. "It's not as though Heather and Isabelle are going to do anything. They are still weaker than an Alpha" I pointed out.
Neither Heather or Isabelle were half the warrior that Xander was. Somehow that only slightly reassures me. Xavier doesn't look convinced.
"Weaker, but they have my Father under a spell or somehow have managed to do something to him Xavier growled "t

worry they will do the same thing to Xander, and we'll be too late to save either him or Father"
I put a hand on his shoulder. "We'll get there. We'll fix it. Xavier I promise

His eyes soften, but he continues to scan the perimeter. He stilles slightly, putting his arm out and preventing me from walking any further. I look at him in bewilderment. He puts a binger to his lips, "shush" he warns.
I'm confused. I open my mouth to ask him why and then pause as I hear the soft sounds of laughter coming from further in the distance, causing my brow to crease. I glance at Xavier who looks at me, motioning for me to follow him. We creep closer to the source of the sound and stop, seeing a campfire and several rogues sitting in a circle around it.
"Gods, I'm starving" one moans, causing the one next to him to roll his eyes.
"Then eat" the second one snaps, shoving a chicken drumstick at him in armoyance.
The first rogue looks at him askance, licking his cracked lips and pushing back his greasy black hair. "Not that kind of hunger Jet" he complains, pushing the drumstick aside with impatience. "You know the kind of hunger I'm talking about. It's been too long since I've been with a woman" he added with a low growl and a fierce scowl, causing the rest of the group to erupt into laughter.
"It's not our fault you can't seem to hold onto anybody. We almost had that other girl but fatty here" another rogue prods a chubby one, poking his finger into the man's stomach which protrudes slightly, "Let her get away. She was too quick for him he exclaimed with glinting eyes and a smirk on his face.
There were too many of them. At least six or more. I glanced at Xavier whose lips were flattened. So far they hadn't picked up our scent but we were downwind. That luck wouldn't last forever. I didn't understand what they were doing in the forest though, camping out. Sure, rogues did that, but it was our rotten luck they seemed to be doing it exactly in our path as we tried to travel.
"Yeah, well Jet can't keep a woman to save his life. Why do you think he has to keep catching lone shifters out here" cackled the third rogue, looking around the group with amusement. "Although hearing them scream is kind of fun" he added, biting down on his food and shaking his head.
The last rogue had his face turned away and was expressionless, Ilis body posture was straight and although he made no comments, I could feel the authority that was practically oozing from him. This was the leader; it had to be. He didn't converse with his men, merely sat there quietly, listening and eating. When he did speak, I shuddered at the harshness of the sound, catching the glint of what looked like yellow eyes as he glanced around the group, failing to spot us in the
"Enough of this nonsense. Clean up this fire and go to bed. We have a busy day tomorrow. We have to keep an eye out for more shifters. We either find a wealthy one to ransom" the man snarled for we find a woman to satisfy us. I don't care which."
I flinched. Xavier put his hand on my shoulder. "Don't move" he whispered..
I was trembling. Even with Xavier's strength there was no way he could take out six rogues and I could help, but I was no warrior. My wolf silently disagreed. I would much rather not draw their attention if possible and knew with one glance that Xavier felt the same. He motioned for me to walk backward and I swallowed hard, careful not to make a sound, but at the very last second, my foot crunched on a leaf and the rogue's heads all whipped towards the sound, their eyes spotting me like eagles
"Quick, get her" the leader pointed with a snarl, and with a curse, Xavier pushed me out of the way as they began to shift and leap toward us.
Shift" he yelled and I heard the sound of his body behind me as he proceeded to take on his wolf form, turning to face the rogues, while 1 proceeded to shift, just as a rogue leaped directly towards my head. We were in trouble now and I could only dodge helplessly to the side, praying that we made it through this safely, my stomach churning at the thought of being captured by any of these men.
