Chapter 3
Regan POV
I felt betrayed as I got up the next day, making my way woodenly down to the kitchen, only to be greeted by the scowl on my father's face. Great. I sensed that something even worse than yesterday was about to happen, although I couldn't imagine things getting any worse than they already were. "You're coming with me to the training grounds today" he snarled without hesitation.
The hell I was. "I can't fight remember. I'm puny and weak" I repeated sarcastically.
Whomp. I barely ducked the fist coming towards me in time. In fact, I was surprised to have dodged it at all. Even my father looked slightly impressed, even as he tried not to show it.
"You're almost eighteen, you can train with everyone else today, I want to see if you have any Beta blood flowing through your veins" he snapped. "Do not test me. Next time you won't dodge so easily" he threatened.
I reluctantly followed him out to the grounds, wondering idly where Isabelle was and feeling particularly hard done by that she didn't have to come as well. I felt apprehensive, looking towards the small group of pack members that were cloistered together at the training ring, Xavier and Xander were amongst them, preparing to fight and hone their skills. As Alphas they needed to know how to fight and protect the pack that they would become leaders of.
"Today we're going to train in our human forms, seeing as not all of us have received our wolves just yet" my father growled, striding into the middle of everyone and pointedly looking at the twins and myself as I flushed. "It's important that you can defend yourself in case you, for some reason are unable to shift into your wolf form, whether it's because you are severely injured, or you have been dosed with wolfsbane. It's an important lesson to learn. I want you to split up into groups" he began and pointed at Xander and Xavier. "Naturally you two will face off against each other. Regan, fight against Tiffany here" he added with a drawl, walking off before I could offer any objections.
I looked uncertainly at Tiffany. She was one of Isabelle's friends and I could already see her sizing me up. We moved over to a corner of the ring, Tiffany's mouth was already beginning to curve into a vicious smile. I swallowed hard. I looked over my shoulder but could see that everybody had already begun to spar, the twins going full throttle at each other, so fast they were almost blurs. It was impressive. My hands went clammy as I looked back at Tiffany, knowing I was about to get my ass given to me on a silver platter.
"You have no chance" Tiffany giggled and flipped her hair over her head, before slowly adopting a defensive position. "Why don't you show me what you've got?" she challenged, smirking, certain that I was no match for her.
I slowly shook my head and then was forced to move as Tiffany began to launch her attack, catching me by surprise, her fist landing squarely in my stomach as I gave a strangled sound, followed by her knee kicking me hard in the face. I dropped to the ground like a sack of potatoes as she danced backward, her eyes dancing.
"This is going to be even easier than I thought" she crowed, laughing out loud. "You're so weak it's almost pitiful" she declared, her eyes dancing.
Pitiful. The word echoed in my mind. Even Tiffany, an average fighter at best, found me pitiful. I could already see the disappointment and pure contempt on my father's face as I slowly climbed back to my feet, wiping my swollen lip and wincing from the pain. I knew the basic fighting positions, but my father hadn't prepared me for this kind of fighting. Probably because he didn't want me capable of defending myself against this kind of treatment. I wondered if this was a lesson or a way for him to manipulate me into agreeing to become Isabelle's omega without continuing to argue about it.
"Are you ready for more?" Tiffany hissed, her fists up as she bounced on her feet, rocking back and forth.
I bit the inside of my lip and put my own fists up. I could see several groups had halted their sparring to stare at me and Tiffany, no doubt so they could point and laugh together. Even the twins were glancing over in interest. I was going to look like an idiot, I thought, closing my eyes for a moment and then reopening them, but there was nothing I could do about it, except do my best and hope that Tiffany didn't beat me too severely. "I'm going to enjoy this;" Tiffany pursed her lips at me and then moved.
Anger coursed through me. Something instinctual took over. I shocked everyone by dodging her next few punches, my head and body moving to the side in graceful movements. I saw Tiffany's eyes widen in shock, even as she renewed her efforts. I threw out a punch of my own and watched stunned, as though it was happening in slow motion, as it connected with Tiffany's nose, a sickening cracking noise sounding as blood spurted everywhere. I listened to the sound she made as she howled in pain and staggered backwards, clutching her nose in shock...
Oh shit. I had broken her nose without intending to. I had simply lashed out blindly. Instantly I felt contrite as Tiffany kept a hand to her nose, her eyes watering with tears.
"I'm so sorry" I breathed as she gave another cry, pushing her nose back into position, wincing as she corrected it, and then glared at me. "I didn't mean to break your nose" I stammered.
"You bitch" she shouted out loud, almost hysterical, "You broke my nose" she shrieked.
I opened my mouth to protest but she launched herself at me, her eyes flashing. I put my arms up to block her attack and then kicked out, landing one in her stomach as she doubled over, wheezing and coughing, her eyes watering slowly. I had kicked out hard, out of fear and she had gotten the brunt of it. I looked on fearfully as she slowly rose to her feet.
I was a dead woman, and I knew it. Tiffany's eyes were slowly darkening, and I could see the menace in them.
"You think that you can beat me" she straightened up, hatred glittering in her eyes; "You think I'm going to let some little bitch like you defeat me?" her tone was incredulous.
Where the hell was my father? I glanced over my shoulder but saw no sign of him. I could see the twin Alphas beginning to eye Tiffany with concern though, Xander and Xavier beginning to move forward and push their way through the crowd.
A low growl had me stiffening. I turned my head and then stilled. Tiffany was shifting into her wolf form, her claws growing, fur appearing on her limbs, her eyes darkening. As she transformed into her wolf, I stood there, unable to move as she jumped directly towards me, a snarl on her lips. I braced myself, waiting for the inevitable, certain that she was about to rip my throat out. She wasn't supposed to shift, none of us were, but she wasn't letting that stop her. She hadn't liked being humiliated in front of everyone and she was getting her revenge. I waited, anticipating flooding through me, for the pain of her teeth to tear through me.
"Stop" two voices ordered in unison, two bodies putting themselves between me and Tiffany as I blinked, feeling dazed and slightly confused.
Xander and Xavier had used their Alpha voices, the one that could not be ignored by any pack member. Tiffany was forced to stop, falling to her feet and continuing to snarl at me, while Xavier and Xander crossed their arms across their chests, looking disgustedly at her. "Shift back" Xavier ordered with a growl and within moments Tiffany had shifted back to human form, crying softly as she tried to cover herself. Another pack member quickly handed her a shirt to cover up.
"Cheating is prohibited" my father's voice boomed out; "Leave and see the Alpha for your punishment" he roared, sounding disgusted.
Tiffany fled without looking at anyone, her cheeks a bright pink.
"Good work stopping her;" my father complimented the Alpha twins as they turned to face him "But don't put yourself in danger for the likes of somebody like this. Regan is dispensable," he said coldly, as they listened. "Whereas you two, being future Alphas are not. In the future, leave the disciplining and the interventions to me" he ordered.
"We meant no offense" murmured Xander as Xavier merely stared at my father, his face expressionless, "We simply stepped in to prevent future injuries."
My father smiled but it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Had my daughter been injured, I would have taken the appropriate measures" he assured them, lying through his teeth.
If the Alpha twins hadn't stopped Tiffany I had no doubts I would be dead by now.
The Alpha twins did not look convinced by my father's assurance but began to walk away without a second glance. I wanted to thank them, but my voice refused to work.
